  1. The road base would be rolled with a road roller. All concrete cracks due to moisture and settling. From what I understand about FRC is that the fibers do not let the crack spread wider, unlike with rebar. It's also vastly cheaper overall. Going to a 3500 psi concrete and fiber is only about an extra $10 per yard, my job is about 15,000 sq/ft so the 200 yards would only be about $3000 extra. It's really a pretty cool product. Here is a pretty good video Gil:

  2. I know we have enough engineers, contractors, and construction folks here to get some good info. I am building a road into some property that I purchased. The bids are about the same. One is traditional asphalt, but I would be the one installing the road base on the half of the road that already doesn't have base. My concrete guy said he could use 3" of fiber reinforced concrete, and we wouldn't really need any base. The soil is sandy loam with little to no rock. The heaviest loads will be 20k pounds at the most. He has been using FRC on his flatwork at 3500 psi and has had no issues. Does anybody have experience with this stuff?

Soo. I’m going to replace a lack of a deer feeder on the back half of my hunting grounds tomorrow. we didn’t get to depopulate the hogs as much as I had hoped we would this summer so the hog pipe just kinda kept them fed. Dumb me.

It’s rolling plains Texas (Wilbarger co) but we had some decent deer all season, only took one buck and one doe. The 3 big bucks are still a round and so are a couple of smaller bucks we’ve seen in late spring.

Here’s my question. Any of y’all put chicken wire around yalls feeders to keep the coons, hogs and squirrels from robbing the feeder blind? Seems to be a mixed bag from my searching online about knocking down the spread to more hassle than it’s worth to couldn’t live without it. I passed on the prebuilt spreader cage as most of what I read says the coons can easily reach through and still get the corn.

I bought some 2” chicken wire mesh in prep but figured I’d hit y’all up before I spend the time and effort tomorrow after the drive out.

We ended up buying the Spintech feeder motors with the drop down spring that shoves back up against the feeder spout. https://www.amazon.com/SpinTech-12VDEZSU-Volt-Digital-Spinner/dp/B003TJ9WEE/ref=pd_lpo_200_t_1/146-1838616-7453019?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B003TJ9WEE&pd_rd_r=ce0efdb6-57d7-4cbb-99a2-b023c63ec96b&pd_rd_w=jO81i&pd_rd_wg=Ju9P4&pf_rd_p=7b36d496-f366-4631-94d3-61b87b52511b&pf_rd_r=X26ME6D3093B2NPEX51M&psc=1&refRID=X26ME6D3093B2NPEX51M

We had as much trouble with high wind blowing corn out of the feeders as we did with coons and squirrels, and this fixed the problem. You can also just buy the Spintech head and plate to put on your feeder motors for about $36.

  4. I had a cousin that was with the ATF at the Branch Davidian raid, and my best friend retired as the Senior Investigator for Ellis County DA's office. Both of them didn't care for No-Knock raids. Both said that it would be so much easier to nab suspects when they went to the store to get bread and milk. It seems as though some departments get off on a show of force, others won't take the time for surveillance to catch a suspect out in the open. My buddy that retired from Ellis County said he could usually get the DA to allow him a few days to attempt to locate and arrest the suspect before they executed a raid. It would make much more sense for any new investment in law enforcement to be for surveillance equipment, such as tracking devices, drones, and stealth cameras.

Tried Revolver Blood and Honey last night for the first time.  Great recommendation  You are right, this beer makes you want a damn good burger to go with it.  Will keep in the rotation.  Cheers.

Revolver is about 5 minutes from my house, you need to go to one of their Saturday afternoon tastings, they have some really good beers that are not in stores. They have a stout (Mother's Little Fracker)that is really good, the Revolver Bock is better than Shiner. I think you can get the Bock at HEB now. Their brewmaster was the head brewmaster at Samuel Adams for decades, even seen him on a Sam Adams commercial. He was from Texas and wanted to come home. Brett, the owner before they sold out to Coors is also a Texas-Ex.

  6. I've gotten to where I only do head shots on deer that I am not considering mounting, or I aim at the white spot under their chin if they are good enough for a European mount. If you hit them it kills them with no running after the shot, if you miss you miss completely (I guess, haven't missed yet). For long shots, I make a noise to get them to face me head on, to get a bit of forgiveness on bullet drop. After losing a couple in my younger years, this has worked well for me.

Charge was Street Racing.  Another Tech player was arrested for same thing in June...

Lol. If they suspended football players for street racing, back in the 80's when I was in school, there wouldn't have been enough players in all of Bosque County to field a football team. Before the internet, that's all we did for fun when we didn't have time to hunt, fish, fuck, or shoot guns. And in Lubbock, you don't have to worry about corners, or objects to hit, just slow down to under 120 and pull back on the road a couple of hundred yards and get back onto the road.

What would you say if when the kids come back to school, they just sit on their laptop with headphones in, listening to a zoom meeting that the teacher is conducting 15 feet away?  That'd be stupid right?

That sort of defeats the purpose doesn't it.  I only say tht because that's what's going on at our local high school.  They let in special ed and esl kids for the last 2 weeks.  There's maybe 30 kids in a building meant for 3000.  Meanwhile probably 50 football players are put into 2 busses to go play a scrimmage.

On younger kids, it means that no one has to stay home to watch the kids, if the kids are back at school. A lot of Surly has jobs where you can work from home, that isn't the real World reality of most folks. The reality for most of America is that they are a dual income family that has had at least one bread winner having to stay home for childcare, and helping with schoolwork. Having been off since March means any savings they had has been exhausted in the last six months. There is a lot of arrogance in the crowd that can afford for the wife or husband not having to work, or can work from home. Those in the real World have fucking bills to pay. What is worse, your 8 year old has a higher risk of getting COVID, or you get 4 months behind on your mortgage? There are some really tough choices having to be be made by families that need both incomes to make ends meet.

  9. I'm torn on this game. Okie State shitting the bed isn't a good look for the conference, but Zach Smith's grandpa worked for my Dad, and I went to school with his mother. Zach and CHIEF Jr. are friends and talk occasionally. He is a great kid, would be a stellar win for him.

What's stupid is not what my wife says, but rather what she doesn't say.

She talks with this extreme economy where adjectives, nouns, and other elements of sentence constructions will just randomly go missing.

Like, in the middle of nowhere, without any context, she'll suddenly blurt "did you organize?"... and expect me to understand her intent.  Organize fucking what?  when?  how?

    ...

But of course when it comes to storytelling time she'll yabber my fucking ears off over some mundane shit.

When Mrs. CHIEF does this I just say "well, you know what they say" and then just turn and walk off, I love the passive aggressive approach.

  12. I have shut down my late Father's mobile blind company and I am in the process of selling off the inventory. I have sold all of the 5x7 blinds, but have some 4x6 blinds on 8 and 10 foot towers. I made sure and ran this to Immac before posting.

This was an idea my Dad came up with when I still lived in Austin. Anytime we changed leases, the landowners want everything off in 72 hours. With me in Austin, and both of my uncles still working, he wanted blinds that he could go pick up himself. We also had times that we would set a blind and the spot just turned out to be not very good. In my estimation over the last 20 years, he had lost close to $6k on having to leave blinds and feeders on property that we couldn't get to within 72 hours, so this was his solution.

All of these trailers are hand built by older oilfield workers that didn't want to travel anymore, the powder coated frames have a lifetime warranty. The blinds are pulled up by a 4000 lb. winch connected to a marine battery, which is connected to a 12v controlled solar panel, to prevent overcharging. There is also a voltage meter to tell if your battery is dead before you get to your lease, or are removing it from your lease. It has a hand built aluminum ladder to save weight. There are outriggers on each side, in the back that extend out to about 18 feet. These units aren't cheap, my base 4x6 on an 8  foot tower runs $9995 (but there will be a Surly discount) and run up to $11,250 for a 10 foot tower and camo Boss blind, but if you have a shop, or shed to store it in, it will last the rest of your life, and then some.

The blinds we use are rugged enough to be pulled at highway speeds, I've pulled one over 90 mph before to get around some gravel trucks. We use https://www.bossgamesystems.com blinds on our premium models, and http://www.texasdeerstands.com on our base models.  They are light enough to pulled by a UTV, or 4 wheeler. Feel free to PM me with any questions, or any interest.

  14. Kids can't spit any game anymore. In Clifton, Texas, there were, at most 5-7 girls on the drag on the weekend. You had to have charm, communication skills, and a dope ass plan for something fun to do, or spend the evening as a Malaka. I always had a Bronco with the top off, but my best friend had a '67 Chevelle, and a '57 two door hardtop, which was kind of a big deal. We had a skinny dipping spot at a low water crossing on Meridian Creek about 6-7 miles out of town, nothing like banging "Wicked Wanda" on a big rock underneath a full moon.

  15. I put EcoSmart Eco36 tankless electrics in the custom homes I build. I have about eight of them in service currently and have never had a problem with them. It is very difficult to retrofit to an existing home, as brought up above. Believe me, I would do it to my own house if I could. The wire for 36kw at 240v is outrageously expensive and all the breakers take up a ton of breaker box space. I estimate the additional cost to be in the neighborhood to be about an extra $2k in cost per unit ran (some houses have one unit, a couple of bigger homes have two units). If you go electric, I can't recommend Ecosmart enough, you can buy the unit with accessory valves as a package on Amazon.

Right now I have two 50 gal. tanks with a recirculating pump set up on a bluetooth plug. Tell Alexa to turn on the hot water for dishes, showers, etc., a timer cuts it back off at 10 pm if we forget to turn it off. Believe me, you don't want to run it 24/7, I had a $500 electric bill before I even had my house dried in. Freaked out, but figured out the pump was the only thing running.
