I liked Godzilla Minus One.  It is an excellent Godzilla story and well made.  There is no way in the world it would ever sniff the best international film.

I've seen 8 as well (need to see American Fiction an Maestro).  My personal ranking so far.

    Past Lives/Anatomy of a Fall/Poor Things

    ...

The Zone of Interest/Oppenheimer/Killers of the Flower Moon

    ...

    The Holdovers

    ...

    ...

    ...

    ...

    Barbie

Swap AoF and ZoI and I agree with this list.

This trip is booked.  Into MGA on Monday Oct 30 and out on Sunday Nov 5

Volacano surfing at Cerro Negro with a stop in Leon.  Ometepe. San Juan del Surf

Some of this looks day tripable  SHould I bus or get a driver down to San Juan or rent a car.

If you’re staying in the hills outside of SJDS you will definitely want a 4x4 car (or driver who has one). We took a taxi from town one time and they could only make it up half way and then we had to walk uphill under the jungle canopy in the dark back to our place. It was not ideal.

Back when we went there was an awesome sailing cruise outside of SJDS that takes you to a gorgeous pristine beach a bit down the coast. Would highly recommend

The Aggie Bonfire Tragedy – Texas Monthly

How did I never know the current candidate for President Will Hurd was the Aggie student body President during the bonfire tragedy?!

He also definitely did not attend TAMu for the great vibes… he got a full a scholly + stipend from a private scholarship organization.

Wait, they look at grades?  Like high school grades?

I don't remember grades coming up much when I was going through rush.  Granted it was the 80s and fraternity rush, but damn.

I just assumed sorority rush was some internal super secret ranking scale of hot, daddy's money, and legacy, with different sororities giving different weight to each metric

I was in a big 6 sorority at UT in the 00s and that was pretty much all of it. We would get very drunk during deliberations and occasionally randomly elevate or cut a girl based off of completely random criteria (ie. she has a stupid hobby or I don’t like her middle name), but it was never grades. Grades were more of a “oh neat fact” kind of thing.

  5. Echoing the Granada rec. gorgeous colonial town. Stay at the Tribal Hotel, awesome little boutique started by a former 80s NYC club/restaurant guy (I want to say maybe involved with acme or Indochine). There was one great restaurant I’ll have to think on, but most other food was not awesome. Numu looks good though

I would also hit up San Juan del Sur for some surfing. Great swells, warm water, fun town, bad food from what I recall. Maderas Village was fun if that’s still around.

We just bought a house in WilCo and have a one year-old. Wife loves her job and signed a retention bonus. If things keep heading this way though (lol, as if there is an alternative in this state), I'd love to start looking to move elsewhere by the time he gets school-aged. As mentioned above, where the fuck do you go?

Yep we bought our dream home (NW Hills) at a phenomenal interest rate in 2021. Not at the peak of the market but I’m doubtful we’ll be able to sell for that price again for a few years with the rate increases. We have a 3 month old, so we’re likely planning an escape by the time she’s school aged unless the crazy ramps up exponentially in which case we will just cut our losses and move up the timeline. We’ve been looking at CT, Chicago (north shore burbs), Seattle and Boulder, but they all would be pretty $$$ and probably quite the adjustment on weather. The direction of the state is so depressing.

Austin ISD isn't going to get ground into paste.  AISD is gradually replacing their schools after a generation of neglect, and the new schools are great.  The district is shrinking because no one can afford to live in Austin, so they have too many schools, but no one wants to close any of the schools.  They could help themselves financially by consolidating schools, but it's politically impossible.  The district is gradually getting more affluent because those who can stay have more money than those who moved out.

Their #1 problem is Robin Hood.  For every dollar they spend locally on salaries and such, they send one more dollar to the state.  It's too bad that the Lege won't give local communities the option of raising local taxes to pay local teachers.  I think folks in Austin care and if given the chance, they would raise their own taxes to pay teachers more.  Right now there is literally a formula capping what teachers can get paid, and in a high cost town like Austin, teachers are bailing out for cheaper towns or higher paying jobs.

I mean, I completely agree, but the state is probably only going to continue to make the Robinhood issue worse and I don’t see the teacher vacancy issue getting better either (due to lack of funds for raises and overall climate).

Between the TEA fuckery and the fun surprises that I’m sure the next leg session has in store for us, I feel like 5 years from now we will have classes of 40-50(via online teachers), our democratically elected school board ousted and replaced with Patriot mobile crazies, our book shelves bare, SPED completely defunded, the arts cancelled due to lack of funds and wokeness.
I’m sure LGBT teachers/students/ parents ousted or muzzled for being too “woke”, and at some point LGBT parents won’t be allowed to pick up their kids because it could be upsetting to the other students.

I hope I’m just catastrophizing and AISD keeps humming along despite the challenges as I’m a huge fan of the new facilities, community involvement and magnet programs they’ve established.

    Talk me off the ledge!

Ken Burns showed us in his latest documentary.  The parallels are undeniable.

Also highly recommend the Rachel Maddow: Ultra podcast that digs into this. History rhymes indeed.

  9. So assuming AISD, EISD, RRISD etc get ground into paste over the next few years, what are the remaining good educational options in the Austin area (apart from the already-competitive St. Andrews and St. Stephens) that aren’t religious and/or some sort of corporate chain with opaque motives and locations in shopping centers?

Yep.  The smaller banks and regional banks typically had significantly better customer service and could move quickly so I don't doubt that (although ironically I have had by far the worst experience dealing with SVB from that sector so other than the fact they are hurting all other regional banks I'm not shedding tears for them).  I'm hoping the fed comes up with a solution to bring back confidence to the smaller and regional banks that are just guilty by association.  The mega banks were always slow to deal with before this and I have zero faith they will scale up to meet increased demand.

Yep, my absolute favorite regional bank lender got wrapped up in all of this and I really hope they weather the storm. Everything from the counsel they hire to the draw process to communication is just top notch. Dealing with some of the TBTF on the other hand…

Even when they actually do have a choice (i.e., loans from non-bank lenders) nobody ever cared who the cash management bank was as long as they would sign a control agreement until last Thurs.

Somewhat amusingly, the non-bank lenders I work with would typically steer borrowers into using Signature Bank as their cash management bank.
