So when Obergefell falls (and assuming generic Texas law specifying MF marriage only), what does happen with existing marriages and parental rights etc?

Why would you be curious? You haven’t engaged honestly yet. Engaging you on this would be a waste of both of our time. Suffice it to say that I think we should be paying more than you think we should be paying, and neither preference would put a dent in the deficit no matter which party is in control. And because that is the case I’d rather more of the money go to the less fortunate, and I’m willing to pay more to keep the carousel spinning a little longer
I didn’t realize chiropractor and doctor were the same profession.

I was making $13 an hour and paid it down in like 5 years. Granted it was OSU, not really a bastion of expensive higher education, but a few hundred a month took care of it.
Pretty sure not everyone with crushing loans are liberal basket weaving arts degrees. Feels like the system has broken the last twenty years.
My rates for law school were split between 6.7/7.8. I had a full ride for undergrad, half ride for law school and still had 100k in loans. I paid them off aggressively, but I don’t hold any ill will towards others who are able to get them cancelled. It shouldn’t cost so much for anyone to pursue higher education, much less graduate degrees, particularly as they are pre reqs for the overwhelming majority of jobs (we can’t all be plumbers).
Just like with the homeless, the uninsured and the elderly, we pay for all these people and their choices (or lack thereof) one way or another. Often times it’s the proactive solutions that are ultimately the cheapest (and will pay dividends down the road) and yet so many people insist on being fairness or morality scolds. It’s bizarre.

I know at least 3 people in my life who are gay but won’t come out. 2 of them are married with kids (one is a great HS baseball player). All 3 of them are consistent R voters, although I think one of them talks up R but secretly votes D.
There’s no “rapid change” rather there’s a progression in society to where people realize being part of the LGBTQ+ sphere is not morally wrong, no matter how much their family says it is. Do you think it’s easier to come out today in the year 2022 or in the 1950s? 1930s? 1880s? It’s not that fucking hard to comprehend.
Do you know how many “straight bros” in college all over the country are really gay and they finally get to “be themselves” in college thanks to apps like Grindr? They won’t ever come out, but they know who they are. There are articles written on this too. One of my professors in grad school wrote an article about dudes who go to porn shops to have sex with other guys but nearly 90% of those he interviewed (he interviewed well over 100 dudes) said they weren’t gay and they were straight. He said “but didn’t you just come from having sex with another guy?” And even anonymously to a stranger they couldn’t admit to themselves they were gay, or at least bi.
It’s not that people have become so free now rather it’s we now live in a society were there’s no judgment and its not taboo—until around the year 2016 and we see the only group of people who are trying to take America back to the 1960s and it ain’t Dems…
This. Although I ended up with someone of the opposite sex and mostly always dated that way, I’m under the “B” part of the umbrella. I didn’t realize it for a very long time, so I would frequently find myself with a “frenemy” with which I would have intense psycho-sexual energy (along with perhaps some inspiration for an early 90s erotic thriller starring Sharon Stone). Being repressed about that wasn’t fun for anyone involved, and I’m glad that I finally came to realize that these frenemies were crushes. I massively chilled out afterward and have since lead a boring, mostly heterosexual lifestyle. If I hadn’t have come to terms with that, I’d probably be a realtor who spends my extra time harassing the local school board and setting up flamingos in my yard in Steiner Ranch.

Do you think it should be legal for teachers to do what the teachers in these videos do?
Bro, stop jacking off to tik tok videos of “libs” and go give that hot wife of yours a mustache ride. I’m sure it will be quite the novelty for her.

I just assume our local right wing nuts are child molesters…especially the ones on this thread.
I mean… they must be. I can’t imagine wasting all of my free time dreaming up these graphic scenarios unless it was something you had a lot of experience with.

Why discuss it anyway?
Discussing gender identity stuff, as defined by liberals, with kids is creepy.
Who talks about gender or sexuality at all with little kids that aren’t theirs anyway? Answer, creeps.
Why do republicans keep talking and talking and talking about sexualizing kids? Between the extremely long list of republican politicians and conservative priests and religious leaders who have been charged will committing sexual violence against children, I would actually posit that republicans have the issue with sexualizing children. It seems like all they seem to think about.
Creeps indeed.

1) Something doesn’t even exist.
2)Pass law banning non existent thing.
3)People throw tantrum about how wrong it is to ban non existent thing (that happens to be creepy).
4)Sane people wonder why you’re wasting energy and airtime defending creepy, yet totally non existent thing.
Because this shit has actual collateral damage (teachers, students, the public school system, the court system, LGBT people etc.) you disingenuous ghoul. The push for these laws has many end goals (some more cynical than others), but it will certainly serve to rile up the mouth-breathing QAnon base into a frenzy and people are going to get hurt.

I’m torn between (I) wanting to get the hell out of dodge and try to ex-pat somewhere because the American experiment is over, and (2) running for office myself so I can get on a pulpit to scream at people for being hateful rubes. It won’t serve to accomplish anything but it might feel good.

Dems should do a massive rebranding push as the party of freedom and family values.

My single mom was unmarried when she had me, and - due to our local public school being terrible/under funded - I had to attend a private evangelical Christian school for elementary. It was the only one cheap enough to be covered by whatever school voucher system they had going at the time. Many of those teachers and some of the parents were truly horrible to me for this thing I had absolutely no control over. I was a model student, my mom a model parent. She did drop off/pick up every day with a full time job, and they treated her horribly as well. Perfectly fine in the eyes of the school, it’s admin, and the church which supported it.
These people want this treatment to persist for every student/parent that falls outside of the range of “normal”. It’s a vicious two-pronged attack, both making public schools themselves less safe for these students/parents, and also destabilizing public schools (through this bounty system/ vague language) so that more and more people will be forced to funnel their kids into a school like the terror I attended. It’s such bullshit

absolutely doable. i've done something similar. drove from milan to lake como to bergamo/brusaporto to the giant venice parking garage to florence to monterosso to torino back to milano. easy peasy. worst part of that is the damn road from como to bellagio...two feet wide with buses and cyclists nonstop. it's like one of those 90's arcade race car drive video games.
Glad to hear it! Was starting to get a bit worried that I made a grave error.

cinque terre is beautiful and definitely worth a stay over. i was last there in 2011 prior to the big landslides later that year so the world has changed a bit on hiking around there. when i was there, we hiked all the way from monterosso to riomaggiore and apparently, that's not possible anymore. even if it was, to be clear, it is not near the same thing as kalalau in terms of difficult and "adventure." it is a pretty full day for sure...and it is beautiful, but it is not quite the same thing. we started in monterosso and stopped in each town to eat something and then kept going. the segment from manarola to riomaggiore was paved for most of the way but the rest of the hike was pretty legit.
however, after the mudslides, i know they changed things and the preceding posts that are far more contemporaneous than my experience confirm that. looks like you can really only do from monterosso to corniglia now without train or bushwhacking. so if you're going for the hiking, there are plenty of other great places in italy instead...particularly up in the dolomites. tre cime di lavaredo...or if you are up for another adventure, the alta via 1 in the dolomites is intense. trails around corno grande in the gran sasso park in abruzzo are a hidden treasure and will be a lot less busy. there are trails everywhere around lake garda that are incredible. the amalfi coast has quite a few stunning hikes (path of the gods being the most famous but it is a tourist fucking nightmare). that said, cinque terre is a unique and worthy stop for a day or two on your trip...just don't be fooled into thinking you're enduring on a similar experience to napali.
have fun planning. wife and i are headed to the lakes this summer...como and garda. can't wait.
Forgot to respond previously, but thanks so much for the great recs. We’re definitely looking to hit up trails in the Dolomites to the extent accessible in May.

What if you’re driving Milan (just from, not in) > Como > Bolzano > Verona > La Spezia > Tuscany towns? Certain death or decently doable?

Is it supposed to be sleeting outside?

a bit more different than i think you would expect. the hike from monterosso to riomaggiore (it looks like mo horn did at least the hike from monterosso to vernazza in the above pics) is my second favorite hike outside of the kalalau trail along the napali coast in kauai. it is such a great way to spend a day, stopping in each town.
amalfi is a bit glitzier, luxurious with places like capri and positano. ct is a bit more..."natural?" i don't know the right word honestly...(maybe more provincial?) but just a bit more down to earth. not associating a preference for one over the other. both have too many people obviously and both are quite beautiful. but there is a more of a different feel to the two of them than one would expect imo.
Was just browsing this thread for trip planning ideas (16 days in May) and saw this. After your great advice on the Kalalau, I had to pay attention. Worth diving into on this trip? Any tips/suggestions?

We have 10 nights booked in Kauai in early June.
First 2 nights are just my wife and myself. Nothing booked yet, still gotta figure that out.
Next 8 nights are with friends. Spending the first half in an Airbnb up at Hanalei Bay. Last half will be at Ko’a Kea Resort in Poipu.
We are fairly interested in the Kalalau Trail hike. Would like more details from those who have done it. What all did you pack for the overnight? What is the camping area like? How long should we plan for each direction?if you’re planning to do the full hike, I would recommend 2 nights minimum. To maximize your time (and if you’re both very strong hikers), I’d do the full 11 miles all the way to Kalalau, stay the night and the next full day, then 11 on the 3rd day. If you aren’t strong hikers then I’d recommend breaking the hike up and camping at Hanakoa (mile 6). I wasn’t super impressed with the camp site, but I was told there are better areas I didn’t see. The full 11 mile hike in was very grueling (extremely muddy and you are literally climbing up and down boulders at times) and done at the very “quick” pace of 8 hrs (no significant breaks). I really needed a full day there to realize it was magical, not sure I would’ve had that if we had gone back the next day. We were able to do it in about 6.5 hr on the way back.
if you camp you will definitely need to get a permit and make sure you know when reservations open up (maybe a month in advance) and be ready to buy ASAP.
I would pack light (<30). Grab either one light share tents or some hammock tents, sleeping bag liners (ditch the sleeping bags), backpacking meals (so you can avoid bowls and bringing more camp accoutrements than necessary). You absolutely need hiking poles and hiking shoes. Plenty of stuff to make a fire, but may be useful to bring a small camp stove and buy the isopro from surf and snorkel (or something like that) in Hanalei. Bring a Grayl (or cheaper alternative) for water filtering/ purification as you will be getting all your water from streams and creeks. The water is very clear but there are concerns with lepto and some other nasty bugs. There is a gross toilet there. Lots of people keep it stocked with TP but you never know.
camping areas were great and plentiful. Grab a spot close to the waterfall so you can be close to the good part of the beach and the waterfall (shower/water source). Many of the sites already have fire pits and home made chairs, ropes for lights, nails for backpacks.
don’t camp too far onto the beach or too near the cliffs, as there are rouge wave and goat/rock slide concerns.
you can forage some bananas, coconuts, liliquois, guavas, squash etc., but be wary of anything without an outer covering (rat lungworm).
you can’t park at the trailhead (and no cell service), so you’ll need to set up a shuttle. I also don’t think you can park overnight at the shuttle stop so you need to cab there and cab/hitchhike back to your car
I’m sure I’m missing a few things but let me know if you have any additional questions.

Part 3: Crawler’s to the Beach:
after some very scary slippery red hills (seriously scary if wet), you finally make it to the end of mile 10 and this sign near the fork to either the Kalalau valley or beach.
over the next mile you go across one of the more substantial creeks (will need chacos/tevas to cross) you start making your way next to the beach and possible camp sites. I would recommend going all the way down and snagging one of the sites down by the waterfall (your camp water source), as they have the best views, are close to water and most of them already have built up fire pits or lounge chairs. You have a variety of choices (under trees, under stars)
end of the beach, during low tide you can go further out to some caves
camp site
Camp waterfall and ridgetops
Kalalau valley. You can take the trail up the river from swimming hole to swimming hole until you get to a rope swing with a huge view
Beach at night under the full moon. The stars were still incredible

Part 2: Mile 2-8 ish (hanakapiai- Crawlers ledge )
Hills and Valleys along the coast. Miles 2-6 were extremely extremely muddy. Very shady and jungly for most of this but. Climbing up and down boulders the whole way (didn’t get great pics of this).
after a stop at the initial camping area at Hanakoa Valley (we didn’t stop here), it starts to dry out and get very sketchy and rocky. Lots of sheet rock faces and climbing up and down boulders with packs on. The actual crawlers ledge wasn’t too bad, but the dirt areas before and after were very sketchy.

Well my neighbors finally took down their giant “Let’s go Brandon” banner today. Are they secretly big “right to privacy” fans and they’ve seen the light? Were they finally shamed by their social circle? Just out for repair? So many questions.
