  1. Okay, so let's say everyone is smart enough to avoid taking out loans for these much-maligned theater degrees and these students instead pivot into STEM majors. What happens when this glut of STEM majors goes job hunting and plenty are left out in the cold (because there are only so many STEM jobs)? Do we then scold them for not getting theater degrees?

I hear you.   Angkor Wat is 100% on the list.   I follow a guy on instagram that is a US ex pat who is training in MMA in Cambodia,.  His gram is pretty good if anyone wants to follow him.  (claudetravelling).  he's given me even more to think about including some island off he coast of Cambodia I want to check out.  I might just have to cut Sai Gon on this trip and hook it into my next SE Asia trip which will be Indonesia/Bali.  I should be able to go to a full 14 days which will give me 12 days on the ground.  Ill just end up doing some work from time to time on the road.

    phu quoc?

I mean, it's pretty accurate.  Our democracy is fucking broken and corrupt, so until that is addressed, none of the policy issues mean jack shit.  Healthcare?  Get the fuck outta here.  Climate?  Please.  NONE OF THIS MEANS FUCK ALL IF YOU DON'T STOP CORRUPTION.

    Hence my vote for Warren.

Agreed on both counts - I just thought it was funny.

Also, even though Pete annoys me, I would run through a brick wall for him if he's the nominee.

We are nearing the end of the first two-week incubation period for those outside of China, although most were presenting in 3-7 days.  Next few weeks should be fun as we see whether the quarantines worked, and if H2H is as bad as A2M.   We should also see a lot more folks who had been positive starting to be cleared as they get their second negative test.

NowThis even thinks this is a step too far

  5. I'm completely in favor of the two pronged approach of: (i) one-time student debt forgiveness, and (ii) taking measures to drastically decrease public tuition prices/make them free for all.

I say this as someone who (i) had a middle-class mom who did everything "responsible" or "right" (saved a full Texas Tomorrow Fund for undergrad, I ended up getting a large private scholarship to cover the delta for the remainder of my undergrad costs), and (ii) already aggressively paid off my $90K law school loans in 4 years (thereby missing out on all of the tremendous market gains during those years).

It may not be "fair" that we did everything right and I won't get a check for anything, but I would still get the benefit of: (i) a stimulated economy, (ii) a more-educated populace, (iii) a more happy, less-stressed populace (both the parents saving and the kids themselves), (iv) more intelligent people going into fields that serve the public good or bring new creative solutions to problems (smart middle/lower middle-class kids won't have to go work for McKinsey or Goldman just to start back at zero), and (v) countless other intangible benefits.

  6. The irresponsibility lies with the various factions that allowed for education costs to exponentially balloon far beyond the measure that most middle-class parents could reasonably be prepared to shell out, especially given the huge increases in the price of housing and stagnant wages over the past few decades.

Why does "being responsible" always fall on average people and never the government, corporations, the very wealthy, etc.

  7. SMU is the 2nd best TX law school for the Dallas market and (from what I hear) UH is the 2nd best TX law school for the Houston market. Baylor may be slightly higher ranked than both now, but unless the recruiting committee is filled with Baylor grads, I don't know anyone who would rate it over say SMU/UH in the Dallas/Houston markets. In the Austin market, I don't think we even recruit from SMU/UH/Baylor anymore, so just get into UT.

  8. If someone needed to vindicate that NYT endorsement, this thread should serve as Exhibit A. Sheesh, men are apparently way too fucking emotional. Pull up your big boy briefs, vote for your candidate, and support the eventual nominee.

Buttigieg is somehow getting worse at coming across as authentic as this process goes on.  Usually the candidates get better at campaigning instead of worse.

I think he would finally gain ground with black voters if he cut out the "debate competition" voice. I have nothing to back that up, but will someone please send that to his campaign manager. It's killing me

  10. Regardless of the merits of executive v legislative etc., most of the Senators still had full careers doing something for quite a while prior to becoming Senators and were often at the top of their fields (Kamala - AG; Warren - bankruptcy expert etc.) in those prior careers. Pete's experience consists of: small-town mayor for a few years and the equivalent of a like a 3rd year associate at a BigLaw firm.

I think what I can agree on and pull from this response is that he was overwhelmingly privilaged, which made for an easier time with being queer maybe? And it also isn't his defining feature as a super sharp and able guy with an amazing background, etc...

Agreed. I don't blame him in the slightest for his timeline as that shit is hard, but I also understand that the experience wouldn't necessarily resonate with others in the community.

His friends see Pete, an out gay man, as a cisgendered man. That isn't problematic? If his friends are extrapolated to the majority (I hope he just has horrible friends), then at best a large amount of people are ignoring a fundamental aspect of who Pete is and assuming his sexuality, at worst, they are calling him a liar and someone faking his queerness, by taking his sexual identity agency away from him and considering him straight.

But he is cisgendered? I think the perception may be that he went directly from the closet to the national spotlight, where he is now a darling to the dem circles of the wealthy/powerful. Although he almost certainly dealt with a lot internally, he likely wasn't subject to the same level of outward discrimination or consequences that perhaps your average LGBT person would endure throughout their lifetime.  Coupled with all of his discussions on religion, it's not super surprising that the LGBT community wouldn't necessarily rally around him as their champion, although I think some certainly do.

Nailed it. I gave money to his campaign very shortly after he announced. Now I absolutely loathe the guy.

This (to both).  He doesn't need to be the most progressive to ever progressive or anything, but there is nothing particularly novel about his views or approaches. Hell, Yang (and I can't stand him) appears to bring more to the table than he does. Pete is an inexperienced, but smart guy with pretty rhetoric and standard dem party views, nothing more.
