  1. Thinking about this more, do we get in over a one loss conference champ Michigan or tOSU?  Three helmet schools, so that's a draw.  They would have both beaten Maryland, so that's bad for us, but our loss happened early in the season so good for us and Michigan and not for tOSU.  Michigan also has the same sleeping giant redemption story we do, so that's a draw.

I don't know who they'd pick but it's fun to worry about it again

Win out and we're in imo. Winning out is the hard part though.

Agree that winning out is the hard part but no way we get in over unbeaten ND,  tOSU,  Clemson, or of course Bama.  The likelihood of 4 unbeaten teams is pretty slim but we still need some help.

  3. I liked the callback when the cartel lawyer calls the snells rednecks and Marty casually says something along the lines of "I'd choose another word, if I were you."

Has anyone mentioned how dark the lighting is?

Also, it's starting to get just a bit much that every episode seems to have some insurmountable obstacle placed in front of the Byrdes but somehow everything just falls into place for them to barely fix it.  Oh, we're having trouble with the KC mob?  Well luckily the strange skinny dipping old guy that happens to be a squatter in your property has some major connections from back in his Detroit days.

Didn't the Fire Charlie thread start after the Notre Dame loss? Seems like we are right on schedule.

It did, and then shut right back down a month later once that picture of him in a golden hat with a giant finger became a meme.  Amazing what a win over the land thieves will do for a coach's prospects and if Herman does that we'll love him again. Of course, I have serious doubts it'll happen after watching that shitshow yesterday.

Really good movie, but I thought the opening scene was a giant plot weakness.

The father and family obviously knew a day would come when they would get attacked..... and the plan was for the wife and kids to run out the back door and for him to grab the rifle and take on a bunch of guys on horseback?

But yes, very underrated movie. Bale was remarkable, IMO

Just started it and this immediately stood out.  You have a single rifle and the only advantage you have against some guys on horseback is you have shelter.  So your plan is to immediately leave the shelter when attacked?

He and his girlfriend - soon to be his wife (who was smoking) - use to ride the IF bus. He was glorious with the mullet and fu. No homo.

Yeah she was throwing heat (and still is apparently).  I remember seeing some dumb drunk college kids hitting on that without realizing what might happen if they got a little overzealous.  They figured it out pretty quickly.

And twicehorn is correct, I don't think I saw Hager out without Hagy around.  Hagy was as crazy as everyone recalls, but i still can't think of him without picturing that cheesy recruiting video set to "nothings gonna stop us now".  I'm at work with no access to youtube but look it up if you want a good laugh and an explanation of why our recruiting absolutely sucked in the late 80's.

I can just picture Bill Little and the rest of the old farts coming up with that idea-Geriatric Staffer #1- hey. we're losing recruits from the metro areas to Miami and OU, any ideas?  Geriatric Staffer #2-How about a music video, I heard the kids love those things now.

  7. Just watched the all or nothing season about the new Zealand all blacks.  If you're a rugby fan this is in your wheelhouse.  I'm not a rugby fan, but came away with a new respect for the game.  Those guys are some great athletes and tough as hell.

  8. I checked out Brown's official bio at http://www.indypirates.com/sports/fball/coaches/Jason_Brown?view=bio.  It looks like he had one of his players check punctuation. The most impressive feat is how he managed to break every school record in the football programs (sic) history.  Dude apparently could throw, run, receive, tackle and kick.

After Compton Community College, he took a football scholarship to Fort Hays State University (FHSU) in Hays, Kansas. He was honored to learn under the legendary, Jeff Leiker. While at Fort Hays State, Brown started At Quarterback and eventually went on to break every school record in the football programs history before earning his degree in Kinesiology in 2003.

  9. Forgot to ask this in earlier post, but does anyone know the actual origin of the Jayhawk conference limits on out of state players that they rescinded last year?

The school president went on about its racist origins since Kansas was so white but then later it was mentioned that junior colleges in Texas and Mississippi have even stricter out of state rules.  Seems that Mississippi and Texas would not be keeping a team segregated by putting out of state limits in place, so there must be some other valid reason for it (such as keeping state funded schools for in state residents or just keeping a competitive balance where you don't bring in out of state ringers).

Not trying to start a cloakroom thread here, I'm just genuinely curious.

    2) I know one of the guys in this show pretty well (follow each other on social media, have each other's phone numbers, but not really friends), and he was a total idiot at his former school. He comes across as one of the "smart guys" on this show, which is kind of funny.

If that guy is the obvious answer, he seems like Steven Hawking compared to the rest of his teammates.  I remember thinking that he and the Michigan guy just went from premiere academic institutions to a middle school.  They have to be laughing at the classroom experience.

I didn't think it was possible, but I like Buddy better than this coach.  As others have said, this guy is nothing but a shameless self-promoter.  No football knowledge, no real social skills, just the narcissistic ability to mimic others in a setting for a short time in order to gain trust.  I no doubt would have walked out if I were one of his coaches and he pulled some of his tantrums.  That, or just punch him like one of the assistants tried to do.

Considering the coach and Malik's entitled ass, I actually found myself cheering for the other team and getting disappointed when a hail mary pass would fall incomplete and Indy would win.

Although shot in and around Austin, and referencing the moon tower, Top Notch, etc., Dazed and Confused has way more elements from Huntsville, where Linklater went to high school. (Also, Everybody Wants Some is about RL's freshman year at Sam Houston State.)

Ricky Floyd ("Randall" Floyd in the movie), Wooderson, O'Bannon, Slater, and others are/were literally real people RL went to high school with. My aunt dated Ricky Floyd briefly in high school. The senior-freshman hazing ritual still goes on. The Emporium was a pool hall in Huntsville. At the end they drive down to Houston for Aerosmith tickets.

This sent me down the internet rabbit hole.  In 2004 Slater, Floyd and Wooderson sued Linklater for defamation.

    Some facts from the article-

Pink was a second string OL, not a star QB, Wooderson is now divorced (not shocking), Wooderson's son went to Harvard.

From L to R, Slater, Pink and Wooderson in 2004.

  12. No rider's course.  It might be a dumb decision but I'm just learning by doing

In my state (Minnesota), you can pass a written test and get a learner's permit to ride with some restrictions (must wear helmet, no riding at night, etc.).  Then when you are good enough you can take a riding test and get fully licensed.

I went and passed the written test, bought a motorcycle and helmet, had them deliver it to my house.  First couple of days I never strayed more than a few blocks on the residential streets around my neighborhood working on starting, shifting to second and stopping.  I've gradually gone a a little further away each time as I've gotten more comfortable and am hitting streets with some light traffic where I can get up to 45 or so.  I'm still nervous as hell around any cars so it'll be a while before I go on any highways at higher speeds.

  13. Thanks for all the replies.   Last week I bought a 2009 suzuki boulevard s40. Not the most manly bike but  cheap, 652 cc, and light. I've been riding it around the neighborhood the last week and it is fun.  I'll be upgrading to a big boy bike next year.

  14. Was at the game with my then wife.  As soon as the chains stretched out I turned to her and said it's over, we won.  Every person in the stadium knew it.

One thing I remember is on the second to last play they threw a swing pass to Bush and from my angle it looked like he was in the open field and just one missed tackle from taking it all the way.  Fortunately we got him, but I remember thinking what a kick in the nads it would have been had the Longhorn defender not made that play.
