Did your bill/account not get messed up a few months ago with Altice merger and new system? My cable and internet go down constantly. Channels disappear for hours (msg says something about it coming back soon). I moved last year and they kept my phone number attached to the old address when they set up an account. Every time I would call, they weren’t able to verify my account because they found the old address first and would shut the conversation down. It was a cluster. Then, they wouldn’t remove my number from the other account without that client calling. I could go on. We had ATT before moving here and I would switch in a heart beat. Suddenlink and Comcast are the only options here.

their current offer is $55/mo forever for 1gb unltd data which is tempting, since i wouldn’t have to call every year to extend promos.

i called at&t yesterday and had a new (to me anyway) gateway delivered today. i asked for a specific model and was assured that’s what it’d get. instead, they sent me the same model as the one i’m exchanging. we’ll see what happens but after having uverse for like 10 years, i’m close to switching. gives me a chance to finally cut the cord too.

Yeah that should be higher, I test 900 and higher from the router plugged into the at&t gateway. Maybe try At&t first and get a replacement gateway, and then you can test mesh systems once you have the proper speed you should be getting.

speedtest from fiber line to the gateway just read at 970. so there’s something stupid happening between the gateway and router. probably user error of some sort.

That is my thought as well, I regularly get 300-400 on my at&t gigabit internet wireless, but as every one of these are giving him under 100, I suspect it is an at&t issue and not the routers he keeps trying.

you might be on to something. when i installed the nighthawk mesh last week, the speed tested at just over 400 from the at&t gateway to the first router. i just tested again this morning and it’s now just over 200. the gateway is only a few months old but maybe it’s just a bad one.

the only options in my derkaville neighborhood are at&t and suddenlink. might be time to ditch uverse.

Assuming the device you're using is AC.  How close is it to the wifi point?  I know the theoretical speeds of n and ac are much higher than real world speeds.  300---350 mbps is impressive.  With Google, I pretty reliably get 100 mbps where the modem is seeing 200 mbps.  I don't worry about it much though because connections are rock solid and everything does what I need it to do no matter where it's located in the house.

my phone supports AX, but the orbi is AC where i was getting 300-350. i’m trying the nighthawk AX, and if i’m next to one of the points, i’m seeing ~200. otherwise it’s now avg around 70. handover on this nighthawk system sucks too. the fam is constantly complaining about intermittent drops. back to costco this goes and on to the next i suppose.

  6. finally got my backyard respectable this year since we got a puppy. but now we’re in the process of getting a pool. i need recs for austin-area landscapers to reroute my irrigation, then resod after the pool build. et tu cactus?

  7. we’ve had an orbi rbk40 since 2017 and it has been pretty awesome until the last 6 mo or so. now if a power surge knocks it offline, when it comes back up, less than half my shit connects again. i’ll have to factory reset multiple times to get it all up and running again. we have around 50 connected things at all times, most of which are smart switches and power receptacles. it’s become really unreliable.

in the last few months i’ve tried google wifi, google nest and now nighthawk wifi6 mesh. they all suck. i have at&t fiber gig (fight me)and each of these systems is averaging less than 100mbps where the orbi was anywhere from 300-350. i need something better. someone help.

On the vs pump he's just flat wrong.  On lower speeds you don't get as much water but.... yeah he's just wrong.  Is he giving you the choice between jandy and pentair?  That would be odd in that 99% of builders are tied into one manufacturer or another and will push you to that.   They're all about equal.

280's are fine. I tend to go to robotics and dont cost builder any more than a 280 + booster + electric and plumbing

can’t think of any reason he’d steer me toward something that costs less if it didn’t make sense. at any rate, i‘m leaning toward variable anyway for the times we don’t run any of the water features. he mentioned that he still maintains a relationship with pentair so i could choose either one.

They're all basically the same.  Each has their pros/cons.  Make sure your main pump is variable speed.

we spoke with a builder at length today about the specs he provided which included a jandy 2hp stealth pump. i asked about switching to variable speed and he said that with a spa+spillover, the pump needs to run at the full 2hp to spill into the pool anyway so we’d never use less than the full speed of a variable speed. he’ll obviously put whatever i want so i just need to decide jandy or pentair, single speed or variable.

Just note.  The Polaris 280 and all other cleaners have been around forever.  Next time you're ready to replace go with a robotic.

A robotic costs about as much as 280+ the booster pump.

Fewer wear and tear parts and use less electricity than the pb4 or any booster pump.

each of the builders we’ve talked to have added the polaris 280. i need to read up on robotics more so i don’t end up paying for the dedicated suction line if i’m not gonna use it.

anyone know anything about stamped koolcote? i’m not thrilled about the standard knockdown texture so i’m looking at alternatives that i can also use to cover the exiting patio concrete so it’ll look more cohesive.

That seems pretty high.  I would guess $125/SF for the pool (assuming average depth, normal tile, coping, no huge equipment upgrades, etc).  Add $15K for the spa.  So, I think your $80K budget is reasonable.  Do you have crazy logistical challenges like a steep hill or did you add any other flatwork or outbuildings that would drive the price up?

nope. backyard build area is basically a flat, 60’x50’ rectangle of nothing but grass. we had a quick chat and he did a redesign more inline with the design aspects we discussed and within our budget. still waiting on the other 3 companies before we decide which direction to go. i’m already hating this process and we haven’t really even begun.

  11. we had consultations with 4 companies last week to design a pool+spa combo in derkaville. maybe i need to reset my expectations, but jesus fucking christ the first quote came in at just over 6 figures, which is a good 20% over the budget we discussed. this is a 20x27.5’ pool with a 7.5x7.5’ spa with a spillover and not much else in the way of water features. decking is concrete too.

is this the new average cost of pools in texas?! gonna wait to see the other 3 before i decide whether to even bother asking him to tweak anything. fml

Just got a Goldendoodle.  Smart as a whip, but hard to train it seems

we’re on week 5 with our mini goldendoodle, chancho. he’s been great so far but sometimes i feel like we should be a little further along in the training.

My rule on puppies is even negative attention is attention. Dogs hate being ignored. Ignoring them is a powerful tool. Do something bad, get put in some sort of timeout and don't even look at them.

correct. i think this is why chanchito seems to only listen to me. i couldn’t pay the kids to stop messing with him for even a minute bc they can’t help but pet him, pick him up or talk to him with baby talk.
