I'm not talking about the flights. Nobody smokes, not even the ground crew or civilians. Nobody was smoking in any of the bar scenes either. It just seems odd to omit the practice in a period piece when smoking was so prevalent.

Here is an article on WWII pilots and smoking.

Aboard World War II Airplanes, It Was Strictly Smoking Allowed.

Yep, most of them smoked.  My parents were Korean War era and they and their friends all smoked.  My mother didn’t quit until the late 60’s when it was becoming widely accepted that it was terrible for you.

Dang.  All those times passing between Austin and Houston and back and never knowing about this place.  I have the sads.

The 71 bypass around Columbus  was finished my sophomore year at UT so after that I would never detour through old 71 and stop at Schobel’s.  Before the bypass I hit it quite often.

  3. On getting shingles if you’ve never had CP, it’s possible to get it from someone who has shingles if you come in contact with their open rash.  It’s probably a long shot, but it can happen.

I have not gotten the shingles vaccine. I also don’t remember ever getting chicken pox. I guess I should suck it up and get the vaccine?

How old are you?  I got chicken pox when I was very young like most people in their late 50’s and 60’s.  I don’t remember getting CP. Until the vaccine came out, I think damn near all children got CP.  My daughters got it very early and I’m sure they don’t remember it.  They are 32 and 29.

A mission lasts a long time and you can’t smoke up there.  A habitual smoker would be in the need of a heck of a fix halfway through.  Might be more fun to go cold turkey.

That or this show done went woke.

It didn’t stop Churchill.  He flew in a B-24 (also not pressurized like the B-17) during the war and had his oxygen mask modified so that he could smoke his cigars during his long flights.

I stopped for lunch at Schobels in Columbus on Thursday, they had CFS on the lunch buffet and it was very good.  $16.95 buffet included drink, dessert, homemade rolls, etc., and it was all good.

Worth it just for the pie.

  7. I’m liking it so far.  But the bombing missions seem to be monotonous compared to ground combat.  I’m wondering how they will keep it interesting.  And Bucky seems to be more of an asshole each minute.  And his best friend really is nicknamed Buck?  Also hard to believe the puking navigator has lasted this long.  He’s a disaster waiting to happen.

  8. Not sure if it’s the right thread, but I’m shooting sporting clays this afternoon.  I used to shoot fairly often but I haven’t bird hunted in about 7 years and I have shot sporting clays in probably 15 years.  I’ll be shooting my 20 gauge Baretta O/U.  What chokes are recommended?  I have F, M, IM, IC, and Sk choke tubes.  I have no idea of the types of stations at this place.

Life without parole is a much harsher sentence.  I’d much rather be executed than spend the rest of my life in jail, I bet most people would.  Seeing as how I want the most miserable sentence for people like McVeigh, the short answer to your question is yes.  He got off easy.

I probably would too, but it seems that most death row inmates argue for life without parole as their sentence approaches.  So, back my first post, because it’s such a rare occurrence, I’d be in favor of giving the convicted murderer the choice.  They can either accept life without parole or a quick DP.  I’d be interested in seeing how many choose the DP.

But when I asked her why it was ok for her to go out drinking with her friends on the weekend while I had to stay home, she just ignored me. But God forbid I want to play golf on a saturday morning. Fuck I hate her.

Damn, my wife, somehow, has been living a double life.

  11. Len Dawson quit smoking at some point.   Not sure when.  He made it to his late 80’s.  Quitting even after a decade plus long smoking habit can help tremendously.  My parents smoked heavily for 15+ years.  My father quit in his mid 30’s and lived to 91 and my mother is still alive at 87.

The smokers I know are now at 30 plus years of inhaling that shit all day every day and it really shows. They're incapable of doing anything outdoors unless it's standing around smoking.

There's a few who are kind of active but they aren't winning any races.

My doctor friends tell me that smoking and being extremely overweight are absolute killers.  Worst things you can do/be.  There are some exceptions, but you don’t see very many old obese people or old life time smokers.

Love it, yeah your group is one of last of the old guard imo.  Those guys from early-mid 80's were such a great group, had to be an unbelievable time in ATX back then.

It was.  Great time to be at UT.  Austin was around 350k.  Perfect size and tons of activities.   We were a fumbled punt away from winning a natty my senior year.

Catch Thursday and Aquolina (sp) for Friday; Saturday night we got a chef coming to cook  after either later lunch drinks at cloud 9 or some apres ski concert, probably hang at the mountain a little later Saturday. Looking forward to it,  10 old Horns from ‘92 getting together, about half from Dallas, half from Houston and half from out of state. Going to be some tall tales told, some that haven’t seen the light of day since fall ‘88

You are about 8 years behind me.  I was 80-84.  I would have a very hard time getting more than three guys on a ski trip now that we are all around 62.  Luckily, and knock on wood, my wife and I are still in pretty good shape.  I hope to have 10+ years of good skiing ahead.  But we are the exception.

I noticed this with the last "discount" golf glove I tried - one fit fine, the other way too snug despite both being a L. Foot Joys have always been consistent.

Regardless of glove brand, even playing weekly (at least), my gloves last a while. A 4 pack is probably enough to get me through most of the year.

Same here.  Maybe I need 5 gloves for the year.  I average around 65 rounds a year and much of that is in the Houston heat and humidity.
