He once wrote an article in the Houston Press about walking the length of Westheimer with a friend to discover the real Houston by walking through neighborhoods, shopping centers and office parks. He then decided to re-create the walk with any reader who wanted to join him. About six of us did and we spent a very enjoyable day with him, and yes, we stopped at a liquor store and two bars along the way. RIP.
The exact article that came to mind as I read this news. Brilliant writer. He’ll be missed.

Loved this movie growing up.

I’m probably old and out of touch, but I had to Google the guests he’s had in Miami so far. Yesterday’s interview was boring. Listened for about five minutes before bailing.

While the authorities clearly screwed the pooch badly, it’s worth noting that the entirety of the criticism in that article comes from the dude that lost the election to the dude currently in charge.
I stayed at that Inn one night for a good friend’s wedding. Beautiful place and perfect weather in June. csb/

No way is it better than Pepsi.

Another vote for the Two Escobars. I’ll also add the Hillsborough doc to the list.

I haven’t seen it in years, but Killing Zoe had my attention and was burned into my mind for a long time. Paris bank robbery gone bad. Very bad.

Mad and (to a lesser extent) Cracked were long drive staples growing up as a kid. I’ll echo above about it having a profound impact on my sense of humor. RIP

Peach was a badass and not just a helpless damsel in distress.
My daughter and I had this exact same conversation yesterday and we used the exact same line about Peaches not being a helpless damsel in distress. Her character could have easily been the weak link that dragged the movie down, but she was great. Fun movie.

Saw it at one of those 4D IMAX places with the wife and kid. Loved it. Funny and entertaining. I’m a video editor, so can only stomach going to a theater about once every five years and still enjoyed it.

Starting to notice more and more labels say “made in PRC”, and im guessing its a pretty deliberate choice because they think its more palatable to more people than “made in China”
I’ll buy anything to support Puerto Rico!

It was greenlit in 2018 by Paramount, and script work started, etc., but then covid hit, and also Ridley Scott was working on his Napoleon Bonaparte movie with Joaquin Phoenix as Napoleon, which finished filming and is in post-production.
Ridley Scott talking about it in late 2021
Details:
- Lead actor: Paul Mescal, his character is Lucius Versus, the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and nephew of Joaquin Phoenix's Commodus.
- Setting: Picking up many years (20-25) after the first film and will follow the story of Lucius as a grown man.
- Script is completed. First draft was in November of 2021. David Scarpa was brought in and finished the script (he wrote Scott's Napoleon movie).
- Filming starts next month (it was supposed to be filming now, but Paramount/Scott let the star have a few more weeks for a play he's in).
- Tentative release date of November, 2024
And this is far more tame than the original idea for a sequel that was written shortly after the original premiered 20+ years ago. There’s an actual script written by Nick Cave called Christ Killer (or something like that) with a plot of Maximus being resurrected and fighting battles throughout time. First, in antiquity, then continuing through time and culminating with a battle in WW2 vs Hitler, then Vietnam and finally ending up in the Pentagon.

HSE was in Houston, also. Same company. Astros and Rockets games were on HSE.

I remember the EMF Bulls promo on WGN… “You’re Un-believe-a-BULL!”
I also remember catching the final minutes of WGN’s Chicago based newscast every night at 9:55’ish waiting for Seinfeld, Night Court, or Cheers reruns to start.
