  1. Definitely a game where we can try to get some of our spot role players some minutes early to see if they can contribute during the conference gauntlet
  2. Onyema has a history of DNAs and primarily poor and forgettable performances at Texas but he’s in better shape this year and doesn’t seem to be completely dumbfounded by the speed and physicality of the game at the top level… he has been consistently better than Shed in just about every category and should be tossed a start against one of the next pre-conference weak teams we play as a reward and message to both he and Shed about what is expected. Shed needs to focus on defense (especially how to play the screens) and rebounding basics … him lingering out of the paint for more than a flash out against a guard is inexcusable and his boxing out, aggression and base/balance for rebounds are piss poor for a guy with his resume and size in a big boy conference
  3. Kaluma and Johnson are good but force stuff sometimes when the shouldn’t … our PG options are very inconsistent but seems like there’s decent promise there if they get more comfortable and confident Our center play is a huge disappointment … I remembered Shedrick being injured the past couple years but when he was in he seemed like a better player than he’s showing healthy this year. He’s playing like a guy who deserves maybe 10-15 minutes a game but is getting 30+ while putting up embarrassingly weak resistance on defense and no rebounding presence If a third double digit scorer doesn’t surface soon and Shed’s defense, game iq, and overall rebounding dont improve soon, we probably don’t make the tournament
  4. In 15 seconds Hurley just described exactly what we are trying to do on defense and how using basics are getting them an “open shot every time down the court”.
  5. Having weaver guarding their center in the paint for an extended period without screaming at somebody to haul ass over to switch out with him is borderline coaching malpractice
  6. Shooting 18% 1/4 of the game in
  7. This is such a cake walk for UConn so far Hurley hasn’t even frowned or raised his voice yet
  8. It’s like we switch everything off a screen on defense and every coach with a pulse this year is exploiting that for easy buckets inside … when Shed switches to a smaller guy he sags in no mans land and doesn’t aggressively press or prevent the easy pass to the rolling man
  9. Gotta get about 8 points and 10-12 boards between the 2 of them to beat the top 50% of SEC teams on the road
  10. Shedrick getting easily muscled throughout the game … he’s serviceable on wide open dunks and coming over to help in the paint on somebody else’s man but sucks ass rebounding and boxing out, and he gets easily outmuscled by guys who should have no business moving him. We are gonna need to get our 2 freshman bigs’ feet wet ASAP to see if they have any rebounding and defense to offer … but, I think we squandered some good chances to do that against the cream puffs who we already played. 11. With the lack of inside presence on both ends of the court, poor ball screen defense, and weak contested rebounding I fear this team is going to struggle to win 50% of their SEC games
  12. Gotta keep Shedrick off the perimeter on defense … we get killed when he’s flailing around out there
  13. Backup LT has been a stud so far
  14. Might as well try your luck with the lotto
  15. Shed was horrible on his pick and roll defense… he’d flash out and not cover either guy… he needs to run until he pukes for leaving his feet so much at times and being soft on the defensive glass. He flashes some ability but his consistency needs to be a helluva lot better. At this point he basically is only good for about 8-15 mins a game, which won’t cut it versus the non directional Mississippi schools. Larry is our best point. Weaver’s hustle saved us several points. Johnson is good but needs to calm down with the shot selection. Kaluma is solid. We need Mark, pope and Kent to get into their grooves and find a way to contribute more to be a good team. Somebody needs to coach up Shedrick and onyema about defensive and rebounding fundamentals to clean up the gaping liability we have under the bucket on that end of the court
  16. Johnson’s shitty shot selection and shit rebounding is killing us
  17. This is a team that looks like 17-18 wins is its ceiling … lotta work to do … Johnson developing some bad habits already that need to be aggressively purged by Terry … we need someone other that weaver to show some dog in the paint
  18. Johnson just forcing shit … gotta be a little more selective bro
  19. This game is some ugly shit so far … marks and Johnson trying too hard to force things
  20. Terry needs to real Johnson in just a it with the shot selection … he can get the shots he’s taking late in the shot clock… get him to work the offense a little
  21. Sadly … weaver, our 6’3” guard, may be our best interior defender and rebounder
  22. We looked good early in the Syracuse game running a fast break-ish offense... and didn't settle for 3's. We also seemed to do decent against the zone with Weaver bouncing around in the no man's land to receive passes. Once things slowed down things got clunky and downright shitty at times, especially with Johnson frustrated and wanting to shoot his way out of the slump and Shed getting pushed out of position (even by smaller guys). The absence of a big man to clean up the missed shots on defense and make opposing posts pass the ball, rather than requiring a double-team from a guard to help, is going to be a problem. The only guy who seems to be able to play a center role is Onyema, and he's like an 9th or 10th man type at best for most teams... though he does look improved physically from last year. I sense it will be frustrating when we go against skilled SEC teams with guys on the frontline that are 6'9" and more. We are going to have to run. If Shed has one viable trait, it looks like he is pretty quick up and down the court... he also seems inclined to dunk rather than shoot flatfooted or fadeaway shit close to the basket, which is favorable for drawing fouls and shot percentage. His shot blocking timing also seems decent... but his battery, man-on-man defense, rebounding acumen, and strength are not SEC starter worthy at the moment. Rodney has a lot of work ahead. And, I am not sure any amount of work can transform Shed or Onyema into guys that can stay on the court for more than 5 minutes at a time or deter teams from looking into the paint for points.
  23. Cuse exposed our weakness (interior strength and defensive boards) and our stud freshman let the pressure get to him a bit tonight (hopefully a great learning opportunity). Shed got out-toughed and ended with just 2 boards … he’s going to have to step it up with the interior defense if we are gonna be a top 25 team Hoping Kent can provide some interior toughness when he’s back
  24. Pretty good half for the good guys, all said.
