  1. Echo & The Bunnymen last night at Stubb's.  Great show.  Ian had quite a bit of banter with the crowd, when you could understand it.  Seemed like he got pissed at the sound guys a few times.  Anyway, great show... good to catch them on the start of the tour when the voice and attitude is good to go.

Other than a handful of known musical quantities and underbutt, best part of ACL is discovering somebody new.  Best part of this thread each year is reading one another's posts about how we happened upon a  new band (new to us, anyways) and finding out something about music with whom we fell in love with all over again.

But all that to say, seeing Bob Schneider that far down and how he's pushing 60 and I'm pushing 50 and partying with his groove line horns 15 years ago.  Holy fucking shit, where did the time go?

At least the upside with Bob Schneider is seeing him around here is relatively easy.  I was pissed to see DAIISTAR and Being Dead on weekend two but, honestly, I can catch them relatively easily in Austin.  Chances of catching a relatively obscure band like Glass Beams from Melbourne are relatively slim and none.  I also like seeing bands that I might not consider seeing live but, you know, since I'm there... and when you dig, you find someone like this (new to me)

Or you hear this and say, "oh yeah, I know that song..."

  3. Best thing I ever did a few years ago is open my mind to lots of new music and bands.  I never run out of good music to listen depending on my mood.

Now, my wallet... that's another story.

The only bands on that list of dogs I would pay to see are Orville Peck, Khruangbin, and Hermanos Gutiérrez.

I see all kinds of great bands up and down the lineup.  If you like Khruangbin, check out Glass Beams and BALTHVS while there.

Its going to be a kickass festival because I can find gold all over that lineup.

BTW, Mannequin Pussy should be great!

I think this is a really smart idea. I would pull Quinn for the third series. Then bring in Arch for one play, then insert Trey Owens for one play, then insert Cole Lourd, who is clearly the future. Then keep Lourd as the full-time starter. Then sub Quinn and Arch back in in the second half when we are way ahead.

I'd just like to point out that I'm not part of the argument about whether or not "rain bomb" is a stupid or annoying phrase, I don't care one way or the other.

I'm simply commenting that the first time I ever heard it used was about the Marble Falls rain event in 2007, and that it was not used regarding the Memorial Day flood of 1981, at the time of that event.

    You know, for the record.

The neighborhood has been part of the City of Austin since 2015.  And throughout that time, the area has water-storage capacity for 1.5 house fires

What water source was used before or will be used now?  Serious question... I don't know.

That was simply incredible.  All the rain sounded so good until, not unexpectedly really, we started hearing stories about houses floating down the Blanco. People inside.

I remember fighting my drains outside... they simply couldn't keep up with all the rain and at one point we got 5" in one hour and I remember just yelling "JUST STOOOOP!!!!" at the rain.

    It didn't work.

At the time, McCallum suffered a bit in terms of marching band.  The teachers were more into jazz and symphonic music.  The percussion ensemble my daughter played in was off the charts good, they played at the Midwest Clinic and got rave reviews from all the profs at schools like UNT, Juilliard, and Berklee.

...and McCallum does have a great reputation for their music program.  For AISD, Bowie and McCallum are the better programs until you start looking at Leander, RR, etc.  Again, one hopes that helps with "next steps"

My kids went to McCallum.  I'm very fond of that school.  It's far more well-rounded than the West______ options.  It's not an IB campus, so that might be a drawback, but I was super impressed with the inclusiveness.  Basically, McCallum kids aren't assholes and they are plenty well educated.

I have to think for music Bowie (our kids) helps too given the intensity and quality of the marching band program.

Definitely.  My daughter wanted to major in Psych (and is) but the percussion prof offered her a spot straight out of HS with the goal of her transferring into Psych.  Obviously it helped that she was a top-of-state level percussionist, but it was still a path he was familiar with and was willing to exploit.

I still think she should minor in music, but she's chosen French.  Dammit.

Well, I chose Italian but that's because I placed out of a bunch of hours...

I differ from some on this point, but I would also be very clear about the choice of major when CAPing into UT.  It's pretty much liberal arts only.  I doubt many get into Cockrell or McCombs.

My view is that it's good to get in the door and then try to transfer within UT, but that has proven difficult for some.  If your kid is dead set on being (for instance) an engineer, then CAP might not be the optimal route.  My son is planning to transfer from Psych to Biology and then grad school in kinesiology or physical therapy, and it appears possible, but some transfers would be very unlikely.

Yeah, so its interesting but my oldest wants to go into Art or Music.  I have my opinions on this but it is what it is.  Anyway, I suspect trying to get in via those programs is drastically less competitive than trying to get into McCombs.

My son will be transferring from UT Tyler in the Fall.  His high school grades were very average, and honestly I don't know how he even got offered CAP.  He got a 4.0 his first semester at UT Tyler and thinks he'll have another 4.00 this semester.   Now, UT Tyler ain't UT Austin (academically and in terms of "distractions") but he's off to a pretty good start.

Shoot... his grades can't be worse than mine while at UT.  Just get that degree.
