Olive oil and salt are some of those dumb products where theres 10x price difference between competing products even in the same store.  Wife buys this stupid miniature D.O.P. bottle of oil when she shops.  It runs out all the time.  Because 99.5% we use it for cooking, for the same total price, today I bought the extra virgin olive oil that comes in a gigantic metal tin.

"You know I hate it when you buy that big oil. It doesn't taste good".

I take the remaining fancy oil and set up a blind taste test vs the bulk oil.

"This one on the right has a bit more bitterness"

    "OK, but which tastes better?"

"The one on the right. It tastes like real olives"

"Thats the new oil that I bought"

    ...

"...fine, whatever.  But I like my oil because it's Greek".

"D.O.P. means yours comes from Italy".

Something like 70% of the olive oil o. The market is fake.

I don’t put too much stock in the Gaza polling. There is a range of political choices from Fatah to Hamas. They don’t get to hear stump speeches from Christian Democrats, or Tories, or Labour, or Reagan Republicans. Hamas has been in charge for over 15 years, and Hamas executes Palestinian dissidents.

Yes, Hamas is truly awful. So were the Nazis (Godwin’s Law!), and they were elected and supported, and then suppressed dissidence lethally. Ten years after WWII, with mandated exposure to liberal democracy, the FRG was a pretty solid state citizen again.

The trick is getting from there to here (Duh). It may be impossible for it to happen organically. You can say that they need a Jesus, a Ghandi, a MLK, but all three were killed while promoting non-violent social transformation.

But, yeah, I’m not ready to write off the Palestinian people just because the group in charge are monsters.

If Hamas has killed off all dissent doesn't that mean that there are just Hamas supporters left?

  3. Lol, right now I'm sewing up a cap out of wool broadcloth using proper nineteenth century materials to make something that might be reasonably historically accurate, but I'm kind of making up the pattern as I go and not following any known nineteenth century patterns. But it will keep my head warm while I'm hunting with my muzzleloaders like my ancestors did 200 years ago. So maybe I'll give you a run for your money.

  4. So my EDC knife needs sharpening pretty bad, but I was in a hurry last weekend when I was going hunting, so I just grabbed a knife that had a pretty good edge out of the box of knives I got from my grandfather when he passed away and slipped it in my pocket. Well, last night I was laying on the couch and it fell out of my pocket, so I looked it up. Apparently I've been just casually carrying around quite a collectible.

  5. According to the data from 2007 published by the USDA, 45.9% of the beef supply came from operations with fewer than 100 cows. 5.3% of operations with 1 to 49 head and 24.1% of operations with 50-100 head were operated as a primary source of income. 71.9% of all operations were operated as supplemental income.
