  1. Finished Andor last night (yeah, sue me). So damn good. You guys have said it all.

I went back and read this thread - I did want to touch back on this one - RONIN. IYKYK. Skarsgaard , DeNiro, 3 Bond villains, Jean Reno, Natascha McElhone, Katarina Witt (both in their prime) and one of the two best car chase scenes ever committed to film (French Connection).

Ok so what color is the boathouse at Hereford?
  2. I just watched the first episode of Clone Wars and I just don’t think I can do it. That was awful.

I struggled through part of season 1 before abandoning it because the animation is so terrible. Now, my fire rekindled by Andor I have recommitted. It becomes more palatable as time goes on, and the storylines are compelling. Now almost through S2

Anyone not familiar with The Conversation needs to correct that post haste. It's Hackman at his best, and Coppola in a lean, gritty form that he pretty much abandoned.

Harry Caul is his best performance ever.

it is canon that his character in Enemy of the State is Harry Caul

  4. necrobumping this thread because I am late to the game and few I've asked are aware of the genius of this show.  I'm just about through season 1.  It's a dangerous show to watch during meal time

Recommend me some watches that scratch the luxury itch - vintage is okay too - that fly under the radar and are reasonable. Thinking a watch as a primary in a place like Mexico. Pretty sure my Rolex yacht master may collect dust if we move.  Previously I was eyeing vintage omegas with a simple white or eggshell linen face. I lean gender neutral / tomboy on watches though I’ll eventually get at least one feminine style for special occasions.

Neg on the Cartier Tank if only because it seems like every woman I know has one, save for Mrs. Laz who refuses to give up the c.1997 Quartz Guess watch.

My vote is for a birth year Tudor Princess

but for real my Mexican friends said to leave the watches at home

I've probably posted it before but I unapologetically do it again, because it's funny and encapsulates our AI Utopia and the "NOW! With AI!" on everything from apps to zippers, regardless of value, user preference or common sense.

and gleefully welcomed by the generation that grew up on Terminator mythology

Instead I’m buying range time at Eagle Peak in Leander for a good old fashioned shootem’ up!  Probably 7 or 8 of us will go with a substantial arsenal.

I put a shootout on the Katy together at Athena a few months back for a friend with terminal cancer.  It was awesome.  We had a small arsenal of handguns and modern sporting rifles.  My buddy hadn't shot his pistol in a few years out of concern for his chemo port.  He proudly hung his target on the fridge for the remaining three months of his life.  RIP Sarge

  9. It's cool enough I made it's own thread but

During the filming of Fire Down Below, filmed in Trinidad and Tobago with Jack Lemmon and Rita Hayworth, Mitchum embraced the Afro-Caribbean music scene and was regularly seen hanging out with local musicians and singing in their distinctive style. Locals complimented him on the natural inflections in his voice and his ability to mimic the sounds of local calypso.

Back in Hollywood, Mitchum recounted the music he grew to adore on the islands to Johnny Mercer, the founder of Capitol Records, who had been trying to make something happen with Mitchum for some time. Harry Belafonte’s ‘Calypso’ album had been a huge hit the year before (it held the number one for 31 weeks and it was the first LP album to sell a million copies).

Mitchum went back into the recording studio to record one of the most surreal Hollywood/music crossovers of all time. The resulting album, released in 1957, was called ‘Calypso – is like so…. ‘ The front cover is a striking image of Mitchum in a technicolour beach bar, drinking Jamaican rum with a dusky beauty by his side.

I love this album. It’s fascinating that a huge Hollywood star like Mitchum, was able to release a Calypso record. At the time, Mitchum was praised for his authentic Caribbean accent, which isn’t terrible, but it’s surreal listening to the album in 2020, knowing that this is a white guy singing black folk and reggae songs.

‘Jean and Dinah’ and ‘Coconut Water’ are really catchy tunes that were quickly added to my holiday playlist. Mitchum also offers love lessons in ‘From A Logical Point of View,’ singing “If you want to be happy, living a King’s life, never make a pretty woman your wife.” And he pontificates on the state of the youth of the day in ‘What Is This Generation Coming To?’ as he warbles “all the parents say their children will grow up delinquents” because they’re listening to Elvis Presley and Harry Belafonte.

  11. my favorite Robbie Williams story is when he had already obtained ultra-mega star level in UK/Europe, and then they booked him to play Club de Ville at SXSW in the early aughts.  They did not have tea for him and he was nonplussed.

Was unaware of the existence of Take That until Derry Girls

  12. this is the first year in a long time I haven't made eggnog for Thanksgiving and Christmas.  Mrs. Laz and I have, as a result, been doing our own ad-hoc Nogsmas across Houston.  So far, we've nogged at Nonno's, Julep, BLT, and Lei Low.  BLT has the best traditional nog.  Thick and boozy.  Available to go for $38/bottle and suitable for aging.  We brought one home for when we need a fix   Nonno's and Julep were both good, if a little thin for my liking.  Julep's Christmas wonderland decor is worth visiting it if you're into that kind of thing.

Lei Low in a class of its own.  They have the Coquito as per usual, but this year they've added the Coconog Flip, which was amazing.  A boozy christmas milkshake.  10/10 would smash again.  Mahalo
