  1. They do.  Other schools in the south have in-state reciprocity agreements with Texas for certain schools.  I believe Texas kids can get in-state tuition at a lot of other SEC schools such as LSU, Bama, Auburn, Ole Miss, Miss. State, and Florida.  There are Texas schools offering the same for kids from those state, though the University of Texas is not one of them.  There's a website out there that has this information but I can't seem to find it.

You can cross Florida off that list. They cap out of state kids at 10% and get the rack rate on just about all of them.
  2. Watched 2 movies on my flight to Japan a couple days ago.

First the bad, The Souvenir (Part II). I’m usually pretty patient with slow starters, not this time. Fought thru about 30 tedious minutes before finally giving up. Seemed to feature some miserable wretch agonizing over life or some such. Don’t care.

Switched over to Boiling Point. Absolutely loved it. Purportedly a one take film taking place over one evening at a London eatery. Steven Graham is the lead as the Chef with issues. He usually takes over the screen but gives an (appropriately) more muted performance. Vinette Robinson as his assistant head chef absolutely steals the show and I was not surprised to see she won Best Supporting Actress from BIFA. This movie was tense, somewhat depressing but also had some LOL moments. Really enjoyed it.

  3. I remember the street preacher dude who had a catch phrase of "because they were.....FOOOOOORNICATING!"  We loved that guy.

Sounds like the great “Brother Jed”. He was an absolute showman and always an immediate stop down for me and many of my fellow Gators. He plied his trade with his concubine “Sister Cindy” who while somewhat entertaining, did not possess nearly the charisma of Jed.

It was a proud moment for me when he rated Florida number 2 in the nation in the number of “HO-MO-sexuals. (Behind only Minnesota.) Obviously it was a time when any Gator top-10 ranking was appreciated.

  4. Anyone been to the Singapore race? I go there for biz a bunch and can walk to the track from my hotel. I know it ain’t going to be a cheap date so it’s all sunk costs at this point. Suggestions on best zone, lounge or suite to buy into?

  5. I've been to okinawa.  interesting place.

A Japanese girl once told me “Okinawa is where we send all the ugly Japanese.” From my experience she pretty much nailed it. Good news is the banana shows were incredible!

BTW-As a former USMC attack pilot, I was in absolute awe watching Apaches do their work. Incredible platform.

  6. Seriously? That is Charlie Pell country. They are as good as anyone at moving money to players.

Your talking early 80’s, then we got body slammed by the NCAA. Probably been as close to the straight and narrow as possible in a very dirty league since.
  7. Here’s a picture of my dad being awarded the Silver Star for his service in Vietnam. He decided to make a career in the Marine Corps, and later served in the Persian Gulf War before retiring in 1993. The guy has been my hero my whole life.
Thanks to everyone who’s served, however and wherever.

I served in the USMC for 9 years and met 2 Marines with a Silver Star. They simply do not just give that one away. Very impressive SA.

  8. Someone upstream was asking about elite status club access at AA. The answer is that CK gets you into any AA lounge (including Flagship) regardless of destination. I’m not sure even Exec Plat gets any club access.

Another nice CK service is that a concierge staffer meets you in the jetway when you have a connecting flight. They then escort down to the ramp, put you in a suburban and whisk you off to your next gate (or club on a long layover.) This service has been brought back (post COVID) at least in PHL and CLT.

But my favorite CK perk is when you land in certain foreign ports a staffer meets you at the airplane and walks you to the taxi stand, pulling ropes all the way. (No delay longer than about 20 seconds at immigration. Thank you cute little Asian girl in Paris.)

This long winded humble brag has been brought to you by someone that spends way to much of his life (and company’s money) on AA.

And yes you need to be international First or biz to get club access (that includes Flagship). And it’s not international BS like Canada or Mexico. It’s a trans-oceanic flights or Deep South America flights.

  9. Not listing American cities
    Madrid
Lyon - not the best tourist destination but a great place to ex-pat.
    Tokyo
    Berlin
    Vienna
    Milan
    Montreal
    Vancouver

That's all I've got, not as well traveled as most of you.

Great list with the exception of Milan. Only Italian city with an “industrial” feel to it. And they close down way too early in the evening to be considered great.

The only 2 weeks of the year worth a shit are fashion weeks. I can put up with the usual garbage to ogle the parade of models walking Via Pisano.
  10. I can't fault them for Martinez.  How many shots can you give a guy to prove he can hit major league pitching?  At some point after that, he either changed his approach or started listening to advice.

God gave us Jose Siri to make up for JD!
  11. Had an uncle that was a lawyer for the Gambino family in South Florida for years. Kind of took everything he said with a grain………Then the Miami riots happened and Aunty is screaming that all four corners of the property are covered with machine gun wielding tough guys. Add that to the fact that he was arrested three times (never convicted) for various mob related activities.

Loved his life, he was a great guy. Always said that the people he worked for never pushed the drugs. (Think pre-Gotti) He was good people.

Let’s get real, Corpus has one and only especial. That’s the unknown dive Mexican place.

Got this beauty at the El Gallo Jalisco in Flour Bluff a couple weeks ago. The women with us would not enter this fine establishment due to concerns over readily apparent cleanliness issues. That was their loss. Might have been the best thing I’ve ever eaten. Get the Alambres Plate. You’ll thank me later.

  13. OK, I screwed up when I said Dodger Stadium was the worst on the west coast. Totally forgot about Oakland (it’s totally forgettable.)

    So my west coast ranking:

1-SFO (Loved it every time, even with frostbite)
    2-SAN (Cool stadium, very Milfy)
3-LAA (Not surprisingly feels like Disneyland)
    4-SEA (Surprisingly friendly fans)
5-LAD (Iconic, but needs LOTS of paint)
6-OAK (An absolutely horrific stadium, but a cool vibe minus the local gunfire)

  14. They have invested hundreds of millions into that place over the last 10 years.  Best stadium in baseball.  Go there and say I’m wrong.  Blue heaven on earth.

It’s heaven for a Dodger fan. Kind of a sketchy, rundown stadium if not. Been to almost every active MLB park and it’s below average on a good day. Certainly my least favorite on the west coast.
  15. Seemed like 45k.  Which was surprising, as the Mets (and Cubs) are always a HUGE draw at Dodger Stadium.  All the transplants come out in droves. I’d have expected 50k+. But it has been so hot.  A 1 pm game looked like it would be blistering, but he overcast made it bearable.   And there is no place on earth as nice as Dodger Stadium on a nice day game.

I agree that it’s kind of cool walking up to Dodger Stadium hearing the great Vin Scully yapping. But other than that the place is in serious need of a paint job!
  16. William Kelly's War (2014) Story of an Aussie sniper and his brothers sent to the front in WW1. Meanwhile back at home ruthless outlaws kidnap his sister. Hell hath no fury when he returns. Great flick.

Had to try it after your recc. Great call!
