  1. Here's a bit of an unusual tax question regarding real estate.  My wife is the agent on a new home build.  The builder offered and paid her a slightly reduced commission last December as opposed to a full commission when the house completes in May of this year.

We went ahead and filed our taxes and counted it as a sale last year.  Now I'm wondering if it would be possible to revise my taxes and instead count it against THIS year since the closing hasn't actually occurred yet.  Basically treating it as a deferred revenue.

    Any ideas?

  2. I'm wondering if anyone can give strategies on the cheapest / most effective way to hedge a largely S&P 500 portfolio. I've played around with options over the years, so not a complete novice. I'm wondering if buying out of the money 3x ETF put options would be the cheapest way to hedge.  Any thoughts?

  3. Why not form a new conference with 10 members instead of a big merger? Something like:
USC, UCLA, CAL, Stanford, CU +
    Texas, OU, TT, OSU, Kansas

Have everybody play everybody just like the current system. Would have great matchups every game. No dead weight, easy road trips with a lot of direct flights.

Great football, great hoops, great academics.

    There is no re-infection.

This is half-way true.  You can't get re-infected with the same strain of the virus.

But... there are already two major strains, the original one from China which 30% of people have and the newer more aggressive strain that 70% of people have.  It is believed that you can catch the one strain even if you have already had the other and recovered.  No links, but it is what I have read. Would like to be wrong.

  5. For spring break, I had planned to take the family on an east coast road trip.  We were going to rent a car and hit up Nashville, Mammoth Caves NP, Smokey Mountain NP, Shenandoah Valley NP and finally end with 3 days in Washington DC before flying home.  Decided to cancel last night.  Just too much uncertainty with our flight out being 13 days from now.  My guess is all the DC museums will be shut down by then.

Thoughts on the decision?  Sucks because we got lucky with the cherry blossoms peak being right around when we would have been there.

  6. Answering the question of why it matters whether or not I like the coach, I don't have a good answer for you.  Shaka seems like he cares about the players. He seems like a decent human being and representative of the university.  All other factors aside, I would rather see people like this succeed.

Contrast that with Tom Herman.  He seems like an egomaniac douche.  Just an all-around dick.  If you are going to act like that, you better be Saban.

I haven't seen anyone address the youth element, which again is why I hold out a small amount of hope.  Tom Izzo made his first Tourney appearance at 42.

  7. Winning the NIT was something.  I'm not exactly sure what, but something.

The difference between Shaka and Charlie is that Charlie is almost 20 years older.  Honestly this is why I still hold out a glimmer of hope on Shaka. He is still relatively young.  When Beilein was Shaka's current age (42) he still had not even coached an NCAA tourney game.  In fact Beilein didn't make a Sweet 16 until he was 52.

It is POSSIBLE that Shaka can show that he is learning and improving as a coach.  I'm not optimistic though, which is why it takes some pretty unrealistic events to get me back on the train.

  8. With this recent 5-game win streak, I've been thinking about what it would take for Shaka to FULLY win me over as a fan.  When we hired him, I thought it was a slam dunk tremendous hire.  But then he didn't run Havok, we have sucked and fan support has dropped to zero and it has been a grind.  But through it all I have actually liked Shaka as a person and have wanted him to live up to the promise he had when we hired him.

So for me, I think this would do it:

    1. Take us to the Final Four this year.  Get that done and all is forgiven, I'm on the Shaka train.   (or)
    2. Keep the win streak going with a Big-12 Tourney championship and an Elite-8 run  (or)
    3. Get us to the Sweet 16 this year.  And follow it up with another top-3 Big-12 finish and a Sweet 16 next year.  But I'm not SURE this one is enough.

What would it take for you?

With arguably one of the more talented rosters in Texas history Shaka is barely going to qualify for the tourney

This team is talented (from a recruiting standpoint), but there have been other teams just as talented that didn't do much better.

2009-2010 Longhorns.  Finished 24-10, 9-7 in the Big 12 and lost in the 1st round as an 8-seed.  That team had: #3 Avery Bradley, #5 Jordan Hamilton, #11 Damion James, #18 Gary Johnson, #33 J'Covan Brown, #38 Lexi Wangmene, #37 Clint Chapman, #39 Justin Mason, #45 Matt Hill,  #46 Dexter Pittman, #63 Varez Ward, plus Dogus Balbay

2012-2013 Longhorns.  Finished 16-18, 7-11 in the Big-12 and lost in the 1st round of the CBA.  That team had: #9 Myck Kabongo, #12 Cam Ridley, #20 Sheldon McClellan, #30 Prince Ibeh, #34 Julien Lewis, #36 Jonathan Holmes, #42 Javan Felix, #53 Connor Lammert, #59 Ioannis Papapetrou

I'm sure there are others if I had the time to look for them.
