  1. I would take this last season over the 2010 season where we were 17-0 and ranked #1 in the nation and then went 7-10 and 1 and done in the tourney to close the year. That was the most painful sporting season in my lifetime. Such a waste. Classic Barnes burnout.

that's all i've been saying anyway. mack won a national title. end of story. if we're only going to compare each coach's accomplishments at face value then what discussion is there to be had? Natty > Final Four. Easy.

That's where context comes into play. Mack didn't do anything at Texas that hadn't already been done before. Now as for Rick, It's been a while since i looked it up, but I believe Texas had *made* the NCAA tourney 17 times in something like the previous 50 years before Barnes, with only a few total trips to the Sweet 16. Then Barnes gets here and we go 17 times in 18 years including 5 S16 trips in six years. That type of completely unprecedented success with the program *for me* makes what Rick did as HC of UT basketball >>>>>> what Mack did as HC of UT football.

Again, by that logic, what Barnes did at Texas is more impressive than what Saban has done at Alabama.  Because Bear Bryant had already done all that before.

  3. I like Asia Cafe on Spicewood at that price point. They have a bunch of quieter side rooms for you to have your meeting. You can order 9-10 different dishes and serve them family style. The rooms have big circular tables with a center lazy susan to make sharing easy. Mix in cheaper stuff like chicken fried rice with more expensive dishes like spicy fish (amazing).

  4. Our football program was arguably in worse shape under John Mackovic than our hoops team was under Penders. Neither were anything special.

Regardless, I can entertain the notion that Barnes was relatively better for our hoops program than Mack was for our football program. But that is a different argument than you made earlier claiming that Barnes is better overall than Mack.

Who is more important to Bama: Wimp Sanderson, their best hoops coach or Bear Bryant, their 2nd best football coach.

  5. Mack won a MNC, coached one of the best teams of all time, played for another title (that we should have won), had 9 straight 10 win seasons, was 10-5 in bowl games, had 7 top 10 finishes, etc. Mack's resume is so much better than Barnes it isn't even funny.

Barnes has coached a who's who of NBA players and has a single Final Four to show for it.... and a lot of losses to lower seeds. Say what you want about Mack, but he generally beat the teams he was supposed to beat (see his 9-2 bowl record from 2001-2013).

  6. At UCLA, Barnes would be back to recruiting 5-star one and done... which is exactly the wrong player for him to focus on. It would be a repeat of Texas, but with a more demanding fan base.

  7. I thought I would see how the 2019 season stacks up against our previous seasons from a computer ranking perspective.  I realize that achievement in the NCAA tourney is the ultimate benchmark, but the computer rankings can also put the entire season into perspective.  For example, is it better to get a 3 seed and then lose in the first round, or to get an 8 seed and make it to the round of 32, or to miss the tourney and win the NIT?

Here are the Pomeroy results since 2002 taking into account the post-season games:

    • 2002 - 27 (6) - Sweet 16
    • 2003 - 7 (1) - Final 4
    • 2004 - 17 (3) - Sweet 16
    • 2005 - 28 (3) - Out 1st Round
    • 2006 - 4 (2) - Elite 8
    • 2007 - 25 (4) - Round of 32
    • 2008 - 9 (2) - Elite 8
    • 2009 - 22 (7) - Round of 32
    • 2010 - 19 (8) - Out 1st Round
    • 2011 - 5 (4) - Sweet 16
    • 2012 - 32 (11) - Out 1st Round
    • 2013 - 94 - CBI
    • 2014 - 41 (7) - Round of 32
    • 2015 - 24 (11) - Out 1st Round
    • ----------------------------------------------------
    • 2016 - 39 (6) - Out 1st Round
    • 2017 - 70
    • 2018 - 36 (10) - Out 1st Round
    • 2019 - 25 - (NIT) - NIT Champ

Interestingly, our best year was 2006 when we made the Elite 8 and finished 4th, not the 2003 Final 4 run.  The worst year was Barnes' 2013 CBI disaster, finishing #94.  This year's NIT Championship yields a #25 final ranking, which ties for the 8th best season over the last 18 years.  This is also our 2nd best season since the Sweet 16 run in 2011, with only the 2015 #24 finish being better.

Barnes last 4 years averaged 47.8.  Shaka's first 4 years have averaged 42.5.  About the same.  Slightly better.  Both pretty shitty.

We have truly been wandering in the desert for the last 10 years.
