  1. The profitability of this whole thing hinges on WHEN self driving cars become a reality. It is going to happen and it will be a lot sooner than the 40 year life of the HSR.

Let's say it takes 10 years to build the rail and 15 years before large scale autonomous car usage. You only have 5 years where the train will be the best solution and maybe 5 more where it will be close. Eventually the self driving cars will be zipping along at 100 mph and literally nobody will use the train.

There is zero chance this is profitable long term without significant government subsidy.

  2. This also illustrates how tough the Big-12 is.  Nine out of ten are ranked in the top 60.  That means just about every team in our conference is EXPECTING to make the NCAA tournament every year.  There is not a single easy game within our conference.  And the rankings don't really do justice to the improvement that TCU has made.  And Tech.

  3. I'm headed out this Thursday to stay at the Andaz Papagayo in Guanacaste.  Hopefully they won't kill me with bad liquor. Looks like I picked the wrong time to negotiate an all-inclusive package with them.

We are planning on renting a car for a day to explore somewhere in the region.  Any thoughts on Rincon de La Vieja, Tenorio or Palo Verde National Parks?  Or any other day trips that are <2 hours away?  We have been to the region several times, but this will be the first time driving around ourselves.

  4. Call me crazy, but in some ways I like this OKC team better THIS YEAR, not even counting all the draft picks.

Even with his slip in recent years I'm not sure that Chris Paul is that inferior to Westbrook. Paul is much more efficient. He is a MUCH better free throw shooter, which translates into wins during close games. He will also make others around him better (at least until they start to hate him by the end of year 2). He will also not steal rebounds from his bigs which will keep them more engaged. Not to mention the extra two turnovers a game from Westbrook.

Then you add in Gallinari who is also efficient and can stretch the floor. Paul George is definitely better than Gallo, but Gallo still put up 20 and 6 with very few TOs and a higher TS% than PG13. He should play perfectly with Chris Paul and Adams.

Add in SGA and you have a young athletic long defender at the 1/2 who should improve in year 2. He is another efficient player, especially for his age.

They still have Adams, one of the 10 best centers in the game. People are going to be surprised at his improvement playing with CP3.

Overall I think they will be much more efficient. Fewer TOs. Better free throws. Better closeout of close games. Paul will bring even more toughness to an already tough squad. I wouldn't be surprised if they win some games and surprise people.

  5. No, we are talking about Roach, whose love of smoking roaches (or whatever he was susoended for) probably cost us a NCAA bid. A single extra win would have gotten us there and his suspension killed us.

Best of luck to him, but good riddance knucklehead.
