  1. I'm super jealous of Al's cold front. I rode out at pedernales falls state park yesterday with a friend who only has one speed - fast. I felt good enough to keep pace with him the whole ride so I was happy about that. Then enjoyed a couple beers in the parking lot and some bikini-wearing girls were hanging out as well. All in all a good day. From the high point in the park:
  2. I think I'll try the rekon as my next front tire. Speaking of tires, my rear tire seems to have Stan's seeping through the sidewall. Never had that happen before. Probably doesn't bode well for longevity of the tire. Being Maxxis, it has the EXO reinforced sidewall too. Weird.
  3. If you're one to "drive it into the ground", I take that to mean 10-15 or more years of ownership and 200k+ miles. To me that's a different customer than someone who likes to get something new every 5-7 years. Spend some time on forums for each manufacturer you are considering and see what sort of issues seem to be a trend. I went through the same exercise end of last year, and all forums but Toyota were a shitshow of problems. Toyota owners mostly just discussed upgrades and mods. So I ended up with a Tundra. Yes, the mpg sucks and the truck is way behind the times when it comes to modern tech and features. Not a plush interior and a lot of hard plastic. It is a truck. But swapping the head unit and other things can help. And hell, you could still get a lemon. The Chevy Trail Boss and Ram Rebel were awfully tempting to me, and I would have gone that route if I thought I'd be in the market again in a few years. There are a ton of great options for new trucks these days but holy shit the prices are out of control. Good luck with your search.
  4. Yeah, they will put the fiber jack most anywhere you want. At least my installers did. Ran fiber from the outside box, up to 2nd story and routed to junction box in master closet. You can also use coax for the tv boxes if the house isn't wired for cat 5/6. Coax is limited to 100Mbit but will work fine. If you need more ports, an 8 or 10 port gigabit switch can be had for pretty cheap. just plug into one of the ports on router and you're set. Also, the wireless function of the router they supply you with isn't great and may not provide good coverage depending on size and layout of the house. It's also limited on features (lack of a guest network being a prime example). I and many others disabled the wifi on it and purchased a better AP.
  5. I like this 100+ with 30% humidity much better than the 93 with 65%. Dew points below 70 FTW. With a breeze, it isn't so bad. Though I am feeling like an AC unit is just about to shit the bed.
  6. Uhh damn, that looks to be more than just a scratch. Sorry dude.
  7. Got out this morning for a ride, was planning 2 hours or so. Weather was nice and I was feeling good. 40 minutes into the ride I got paged for work. Had to alter my route and still got 15 miles in but not the more fun and challenging stuff I was headed to. All for 15 minutes of fucking work. Still an enjoyable ride tho.
  8. re: 1x, 2x, 3x. I'm on an ancient bike by today's standards - a 2012 (or 2011? can't remember) Tallboy. It came with a 3x and I was riding that until the beginning of last year when I upgraded it to 1x11. That is the best upgrade I've ever done. It cured new-bike-itis for me and breathed some new life into the bike.
  9. I should take breaks. I never do when I'm riding solo (which is most of the time). But I do carry a camelback with ice water in it.
  10. Ha, that's awesome. I've taken calls from a few interesting places, but not yet from the trail. perhaps I need to try it.
  11. Good on you for getting your rides in despite the heat, Twice. My schedule hasn't allowed for morning rides lately, and I am finding it super hard to get motivated for a ride when I get home from work and it's 100+. So I'm barely getting in 1 ride per week...lame. I rode yesterday afternoon and it's just moon dust out there, dry as a bone. Hope to get a decent ride or 2 in this weekend.
  12. I rode today at 5. Our relatively cool early summer is definitely behind us, and it's the normal July anus-scorching heat out there now. Felt pretty good during the ride though, but after showering and eating dinner I'm now pretty wiped out.
  13. Yep, Husky X-act's are as you describe, and I like them better than Wathertech. The Husky Weatherbeater's are more similar to WT. I put X-Act in the front and Weatherbeater in the back, cuz I like to party.
  14. I usually have it around 80-90, which is really more than enough.
  15. I got a good ride in this morning on my local trails, and I have never seen as many riders on those trails as I did today. It felt fantastic outside for a late June morning, so maybe that's why so many people were out.
  16. Ha, yeah I guess it says so right there in your post. I probably shouldn't post before morning coffee, lol I use a Schrader adapter over my presta valves and that works well for me.
  17. Get an air compressor, totally worth it.
  18. They're Ergon grips. I've been riding with them for years and really like them.
  19. That's just the nature of central texas riding. There aren't really any long sustained climbs, rather everything is short but punchy with rocks, ledges and roots. Lots of chunk and that's what can really wear you down - constantly having to negotiate the chunk going uphill instead of getting in a rhythm and grinding uphill for a few miles. I've seen that put a hurting many a rider from cali/colorado who are excellent climbers but are not used to the technical climbs.
  20. The rock section was downhill, although there were other similar parts that went uphill. Not that bad though. And the bridge was an optional feature...in that area there were a bunch of little side loops with wooden features, big drops and such. Just extracurricular stuff off the main trail.
  21. I checked out a new to me trail I heard about recently out in Dripping Springs. It was built and is maintained by the local high school mountain bike team, which I think is super cool. I would have loved to have had that option when in high school. The trail is only 5.4 miles, but is pretty fun. Fast and flowy in parts with some ledges and creek crossings. Did a couple laps and enjoyed it.
  22. Yes, it's one of my favorite places to ride near Austin. I usually ride some combo of the horse trail + juniper ridge + madrone. you can put together some nice 20+ mile loops out there with decent elevation gain as well.
  23. I've got no advice other than get a feel for the width of your bars and ride through the ones you think you can fit. I am no fan of tree gates, though I know some people like them and think they're fun. To each their own.
  24. Nice vid. So I see they are building a new trail with some wooden features. There is a wall ride that looks a bit odd to me from the pictures. I've ridden a couple of these before, but not quite like this one. Here is a pic: The transition from the lower part to the "wall" section looks rather abrupt. Not sure if you're supposed to come off the dirt straight into the wall or what. Then exiting the wall: Maybe it's the angle of the pic but that looks kinda sketchy to me. Gonna have to go check it out when it's complete. Oh, and this is what leads into it:
