I'm skeptical that these types of voters really will vote for Beto when it comes down to it. They will soon be bombarded with messages that it's important to keep the Senate red so that Trump can nominate more Gorsuchs and Kavanaughs to the Supreme and other federal courts. Voters will hold their nose and vote Cruz.
Correct. “Librul” has been made into such a scary ugly connotation, people will opt for the devil they know, even when it’s against their own interest. -
I think it’s critical that these young voters vote early.
The young are much more likely than the olds to look at a long line on Election Day and say “fuck this I ain’t waiting 30 minutes to vote” and the leave without voting.
Yep
I going to do some VDR events on the 40 acres to get addresses updated and kids registered. Then early voting push. Lot of untapped votes. -
Nice. There was a big airboat gathering in POC last weekend. I fucking hate airboats. FUCKING HATE THEM. Never came across one that wasn't an asshole. Some buddies of mine were burned by one last weekend while they were fly fishing in a lake on St. Joe's island. Guide ran within 20 feet of them.
Agreed excepting a few guides that only use them for ducks. I actually tied on a skitterwalk and narrowly missed a few of them - they were in range too. It’s hard to hit the driver and not also hit the passengers -
I know this is pretty much rhetorical but why can't any commercial/tv show/movie get a fishing scene correct? the spinning reel upside down is a constant but the latest I saw was the spinning reel on a heavy duty baitcaster rod. Also one of the worst offenders is Academy. This probably should have gone in the trivial things that annoy the shit out of you thread.
That shit is cringe worthy. Magazine ads too.
Fished POC. Trout limits to 28 Sun/ Mon am in West Maddy. Bite lasted until 10 and was red hot sunday, and a slow grind Monday. Couldn’t find a keeper Red anywhere. Floating grass was unbearable in some of lakes and windward shorelines.
Fuck fishing Saturday, got run over by at least 60 airboats wading the shoreline near Pringle. Miserable.
Monday was awesome.- 1

Quick but important note on Texas ID law. You can bypass the Id requirement with a copy of your voter ID card for example and it’s considered a valid form of ID. I’ve registered a few of my subcontractors so they can cash checks at banks that require a second ID.
You don’t have to have a residence and can have the card mailed wherever- abroad, homeless shelter etc.
Fill out affidavit at the polls and bring one of the following: voter ID card, original birth certificate, original utility bill, bank statement, government check, original paycheck.
I feel like this info isn’t out there and the way that the requirement was presented by the state is rather dubious.
More in voting while abroad.

Does anyone have the details on Beto being one of 4 dems who voted against the tax exemptions, etc, related to Harvey relief today?
Here’s what the campaign sent me:
Not only was Beto on the ground as Rockport, Victoria, Goliad, Port Arthur, Beaumont, Port Lavaca, and Houston recovered from the greatest amount of rain ever recorded in the continental United States but he has consistently voted for robust Harvey funding. This includes working with bipartisan members of Congress to pass disaster relief packages totaling $15.3 billion (HR 601), $36.5 billion (HR 2266), $81 billion (HR 4667), and $90 billion (HR 1892).
It's also important to note that Senator Cruz voted against over $12 billion for FEMA, including $7.9 billion for the Disaster Relief Fund. He also voted against $250 million for pre-disaster mitigation grants, $260 million for flood mapping, and $700 million for firefighter equipment and staffing grants. While Cruz refused to support this funding, Senator John Cornyn and Congressman O'Rourke both voted for it.
Really enjoyed meeting you the other day.

If it comes down to those two, I am tapping out.
Agreed except I’ll be on the beach in Costa Rica the second my son graduates high school. -

Here we go. That viral tweet is the moment Beto needed to get his name known across the country. The national media will finally wake up and take notice.
All eyes will be on Texas now. Beto vs. Cruz. A good man vs. a spineless weasel. The stakes couldn't be higher.
And it started with a Cruz attack.
Beto has been masterful at redirecting the attacks to his advantage. “Whataburger liberal?” Yep we love Whataburger. /Proceeds to skateboard around the Parking lot.
That’s how you beat this fucker.
That GQ article was interesting regarding Cruz. He’s trying to be funny and genuine and he’s terrible at it. It keeps backfiring. He’s like someone on the spectrum rehearsing to be sociable and funny.- 1

I share your bleak outlook reagrding the options at hand. Much like a cancer patient whose tumor had metastasized, simply cutting out the problem is no longer feasible. Even if you could locate the millions of illegal aliens, the mere logistics of deporting them seems insurmountable. Unfortunately, one has to understand when they’re fighting a losing battle, and I think the Republicans may be at that point. Some form of amnesty may be the only route if any hope of bipartisan reform is to be realized.
Surprisingly I agree with you. Get them on the tax roles. It’s been a necessary shadow economy forever. We looked the other way. Are we to now deport someone whose spent there entire adult life in our community back to a country they don’t know at all? Leave their kids without parents so they burden our society?
You can increase border security and reduce the strain on our system and not be a complete shithead.- 1

Yes they can.
GOP = strong on national defense
Dems = weak on defense
That's been the playbook for decades. It's called brainwashing.
I work with a lot of vets when I can, and there is quite a bit of truth to this. Even though the reality is most of the spending is on Hardware, the GOP gets them blown up more often then reduces funding for services when they get out.
They often largely avoid politics and are under-informed. So they are easy targets for pretty simple tactics from the right. Flag hugging Works, even if you send your minions to fuck up the VA right after you hump the flag.
As with the rest of the GOP I see a lot of them voting against their self interest. (My mother is straight R voter despite relying on ACA, Medicaid and possibly needing Social Security at some point.). -
Its tough because it resonates most with the voters Beto is trying to reach out to. In rural Texas, the military is a huge source of pride because it is something anyone can do to get on the straight and narrow regardless of your grades, and have everyone be proud of you for, in a world surrounded by very few opportunities to do so. Anything that even comes close to slighting that is going to be a negative. At the same time, Beto has been engaging with these people directly and showing he is planning on representing them. It'll be interesting to see how it turns out.
And he’s going into those communities and listening to the parents of those service members. He’s put VA services as a top priority during his time in the House. Nearly doubled the number of psychiatrist at the VA hospital in his district.
The empathy is palpable. Your kids are fighting and returning and not being taken care of. I’m fighting to fix that. I’ve already improved the situation but must keep fighting.
I met a small town waitress Monday and we discussed her son joining the marines for a long time. She asked about my Beto shirt. Just casually discussing his work with the VA was enough to get her hyped up to vote. “I’m sick of all the bickering and ugliness and rah rah politics. I just want my boy taken care of when he comes back”
The way to connect with a lot of Texans who don’t typically vote or are casual voters is to hone in on the one or two topics they care about and show that you also care and won’t forget them.
Beto’s track record on veterans issues is stellar. -
on the comment about not prescreening, not hiding (and no negativity - he doesn't even refer to Cruz or Trump directly), engaging the opposition - i read the Austin Chronicle interview between O'Rourke and Ethan Hawke recently, and he describes a San Antonio town hall where they invited the opposition in, let them have the first question, and then afterwards the guy went up and gave O'Rourke his card. I was there, that was exactly how that happened, Beto didn't mention that half the crew were also open carrying. No eye batted. That's actually why I remember the guy going up and giving him his card - i perked up when he was approaching Beto but it was all civility.
https://www.austinchronicle.com/news/2018-08-17/beto-o-rourke-and-ethan-hawke-in-conversation/
It’s inclusive every time. I like it. Everyone is welcome; Texas leads on issues-what’s your idea. -
And I would bet almost anything that Beto actually will respond to the guy. Multiple times even.
They got back to me very quickly. They are efficient and hard working. I was surprised how few people he had to make so much happen- very dyi campaign- 1

Long post reporting from the hinterlands.
I have family in the area, so I attended the Beto Town Halls in Port Lavaca and Edna yesterday. The question and answer section felt like real democracy and was very inspiring. The crowds were pretty diverse mix of old democrats, younger people, plant workers, a few trump voters, and independents. So incredibly civil, honest, and respectful. Watching the Question and Answer portions of his town halls online is worth it. I had a lot of great conversations with small town folks, and that really humanized small town residents that I often pre-judge as trump rubes. I feel Beto's strategy will work. People feel ignored and forgotten. And they are sick of the negativity in politics. There are a lot of votes there. As one of the local Democrat chairs told me: "there are plenty of registered voters here, they just haven't voted in 20 years." And for good reason, there hasn't been a realistic chance of a dem winning in a long time.
One plant worker stood up and explained how he lost his job at Alcoa when it closed the plant due to China's policies on aluminum. He admitted, with a tinge of embarrassment, that he and many of his friend took a chance on Trump because he promised to go after China. The guy just wants his job back, and he's angry that China took it. That simple. I think this is the case all over the state. And I can't blame him. Never mind that Alcoa poisoned the entire bay with Mercury, or that its a Superfund site, or that the huge bauxite piles spew red dust over everyone's houses. Good riddance to some of these companies. I know those jobs are likely never coming back. But i feel for him. Beto was empathetic, explained that we need to engage China with the help of our allies in Europe, Canada and Mexico for it work. And we need to so carefully so we don't hurt others in the community like farmers. That goes a long way in communities like Port Lavaca. And word gets around.
Two 18 year old, first time voters drove down from Houston. A couple parents pulled there kids from school to attend. A couple progressive local millennials trying to find how they can reach their single issue voter peers.
Another guy had a question about tax credit exemptions for homeschooling. Beto heard his point, and admitted he had not consider that angle to the issue, and wanted to think about it more and reach out to the guy later via email.
He is the Antithesis of Trump or Cruz. Humble, honest, civil, funny, relatable, empathetic, genuine, and smooth without appearing slick. On a question about ending our perpetual wars, he intimated that there is no sexy or happy answer and that it needs to be up to congress to use all resources and experiences to craft a strategy. He asks the people what they care about and want, and learns from these town halls to improve as a candidate and representative. That's how it is supposed to work. He hasn't taken PAC money in several years and zero on this campaign. He is on the VA Committee in the House because its important and he cares about vets, while his peers rush to committee positions that will bring in that flood of PAC money from the Energy and Big Pharma sector. And he said he would come back to the community as senator and be held accountable. No pre-screening of questions, no hiding in safe spaces with only his supporters. No negativity towards Cruz or Trump. He goes into the Reddest areas of the state because they are still Texans and shouldn't be ignored.
Last bit, I went to ask him a question after the Edna Town Halls about Harvey relief, a staffer knocked over her Whataburger iced tea, and spilled it on the floor. He paused, like he was hosting a party in his own kitchen, grabbed napkins and helped her clean it up. Then he apologized for the interruption and finished answering the question. It was the most natural and real thing. His staffer emailed me more information later that night in case I needed better defined talking points.

On the website, they appear to be going hard on the Manafort stuff, and ignoring Cohen. Good strategy, since they can claim the Manafort stuff had nothing to do with Trump.

Palomar and FG are my go-to knots. I've always heard the saying though, "better to tie a decent knot great than to tie a great knot decently." Practice in the garage until it becomes second nature so you can do it on a rocking boat or in bad light.
Same for inshore, except double Palomar with braid. Regular Palomar will pull through.
Lurch also test your knots by pulling on them right up to near breaking strength until you get dialed in. -
Do you even know what a conservative is?
Moaaar Guns/ No Abortion.
That’s all it means now. -
All I know is Chronicle's reporting said they spent $90 million in 2016-2017:
Weekly services accounted for 35% of their spending
TV ministry accounted for 28%
Mission and outreach accounted for.... 1.3%. They spent almost 12x that on fundraising.
They made $78 million in contributions. $2.8 million in product sales. $1.75 million in touring events.
https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/4489169-2017-Financial-Statements-for-Lakewood-Church.html
1.3% of revenue in outreach and mission work.
That’s fucked. Maybe have a total charity/ outreach fund meet a decent percentage of total budget or face the tax hammer.
My church releases financials each week. And mission work is way higher than 1.3%.
Who gives these fuckers money.

Wait....is that grown-ass man shooting a 20 ga?
That’s the doughy 20 gauge guy who can’t handle a 12 but can’t hit shit and rallies behind: “it being more sporting with a 20.” Whilst winging 3 birds per hunt and maybe bagging two. He always has a fuckload of gear too. -
I hope Beto takes the higher ground. Don’t roll in the mud with this pig.
But respond with clever counter-messaging. “As a Texan, I’m not going to tell you to vote straight party. You know your community, you’re informed, and you’ll vote for the best candidate regardless of party”
The whole straight party voter philosophy should be against what Texans stand for. -
Does anyone know of a reputable organization that helps people get photo IDs so they can vote in Texas? Is there even such a thing? I'd like to volunteer for something like this in the months heading into the election. I don't have a ton of bandwidth right now and I feel like this is an area where my time would be most valuable. Or if anyone has better ideas I'd love to hear them (keeping in mind that I already volunteer with Beto's campaign).

Don’t need one:
http://www.votetexas.gov/mobile/id-faqs.htm
Here is a list of the supporting forms of ID that can be presented if the voter does not possess one of the forms of acceptable photo ID and cannot reasonably obtain one:
copy or original of a government document that shows the voter’s name and an address, including the voter’s voter registration certificate;
copy of or original current utility bill;
copy of or original bank statement;
copy of or original government check;
copy of or original paycheck; or
copy of or original of (a) a certified domestic (from a U.S. state or territory) birth certificate or (b) a document confirming birth admissible in a court of law which establishes the voter’s identity (which may include a foreign birth document).
After presenting one of the forms of supporting ID listed above, the voter must execute a Reasonable Impediment Declaration.

One of my biggest regrets in life is that I only pissed on one of his campaign signs while driving through his district. I really wished I filmed it so I could tweet the video at the treasonous bastard daily.
