I remember 2016. It’s gonna be a long night folks. Don’t get too worked up.

Yup. I tried to have a political discussion with my father in law a month back and some of the first words out of his mouth were about how the Democrats are going to take away his medicare and social security. We just had to agree not to discuss politics any more. I was dumbfounded at the disconnect from reality.

So looking at Zork's numbers above, it's really interesting to me that about 30% of the voters have never voted in a primary and about 10% haven't voted period. No clue about past elections, but those are some huge numbers and if they break hard for one candidate they could seriously impact the race.

Lots of college basketball while scanning the internet feverishly for every scrap of election news. And beer.

Just spoke with my parents who live in Scottsdale - my 76 year old Dad, who NEVER votes Democratic, cast his vote for Sinema.
But he's a fiscal conservative and he knows that those who care about fiscal responsibility and aren't seething with anger at "others" have no place in Trump's GOP.
It’s refreshing to hear of open minded older folks who are still capable of thinking for themselves. My wife’s grandad is one as well, but they sure seem to be in the minority these days.

Beto is going to need voters like this in order to win. If he wins, the flaw is that the polls either missed or barely touched on this sentiment. Which makes sense. A poll might speak to 500 people to represent 7.2m Texas. Speak to 1 or 2 people in a smaller region, and make assumptions about the remaining 15000 regional voters.
Yup, doing the math for my family, I think it's fair to say that in a typical election in the past we would have collectively voted something like 15-5 in favor of Republicans. That number is flipped this year. Hoping there are lots more like us, and I wonder if the polls would pick up on that sort of phenomenon. I guess we'll find out in a little over 24 hours.

I listened to this 30 minute podcast about an evangelical similar to you who grew up voting R in Texas. Decent listen but nothing we don't already know if you're from Texas. She's voting Democrat for the first time this year btw.
Pretty much describes me, my wife and most of our siblings and their families. Our parents have not made the switch, nor do I ever expect them too. If anything, this year they've dug their heels in even farther in favor of the Republicans. After all, according to my dad (via DeSouza)there are some striking parallels between Donald Trump and Abraham Lincoln, don't ya know.

I think this is part of it. They are programmed to vote R from birth no matter what, so they don't pay attention. They just go into that booth every 2 years, hit the R button, and move on.
Yeah, I was pretty much one of those dumbasses for a long, long time. It's a shame. Mostly born of ignorance, intellectual laziness, religious, family and community influence and a lot of status quo thinking. Glad I've moved on from it.

Hope I'm wrong though.

Yeah, I don't see that happening. Everyone I know on both sides of the aisle except for my brother has early voted and I suspect that's not unique to my social circle.

Holy shit that's good. Would love to send that to the parents, but they'd never speak to me again.

I'll probably vote for Beto, but not because of my conscience. My conscience is the opposite because I'm generally a single issue voter (pro-life). But I'm swept up in trying to be cool and topical and trendy I guess. J/k, just because it's really important to someone who asked me to vote.
You already got your "pro-life" Supreme Court justices, now go place a vote for a real Texan who actually gives a shit even if his politics are a bit different than yours. It won't kill you, it might even do some good. Vote Beto.

WTF is wrong with these people?

By the way, maybe you weren't in Oak Hill. Bevo lives way north, and Oak Hill is way SW.

Why do you think that is? One of the same guys told me the head of the Silver Spurs and Bevo used to live up the street from them in that area, so maybe it's just attractive to more conservative types in a general way?
That was a total guess on my part, no evidence at all for it. I said it because Oak Hill reminds me of the middle class/lower middle class neighborhoods in Midland where I see the most Cruz signs so just extrapolated from there. That said, there are way fewer Cruz signs in Oak Hill than in the similar neighborhoods in Midland. Still a surprising number of Beto signs out here, most I've ever seen for a Democrat by far.
-
Fair enough. Your experience in Oak Hill was definitely not representative, although I do suspect it’s a bit more Trump friendly than other parts of town.
-
I believe you went to some sort of house party or bible study in Oak Hill and were in a group of evangelical Christians or MLMers ( they’re pretty interchangeable in my experience) who just happened to be big Trump fans and you extrapolated that self selected group as being representative of all of Oak Hill.

God, y’all don’t know how badly I want to post that essay on Facebook to my own Facebook and tag my father.
It describes him so accurately that I was half expecting a screenshot of his profile as an example.
He’s been a Fox Newser for years but once he joined Facebook was when it got unbearable.
I hate it all so much.Join the club. It’s taking all of my willpower not to post it. Trying to rise above.

Was hanging out with a bunch of Cruz voters today in Austin and they were telling me how uninformed and annoying the GOTV volunteers they've encountered are (which is probably just their bias showing). Many of them troll/keep texting them and leading them on for hours or full days for fun it sounds like.
Anyways, is Oak Hill a Cruz bastion? Saw more Cruz signs than Beto only in that 'hood. Saw Beto literally everywhere else en masse.
No idea what part of Oak Hill you were in, but when I visited my in-laws two weeks ago in Oak Hill there were Beto signs about every third house and they outnumbered Cruz signs easily 20-1. It was overwhelming. In fact, it was almost enough to make me feel bad for my Trump/Cruz loving father in law to be so surrounded by such ridiculous numbers of libruls.

Dismisses the Fox News element way too readily, and rather hyperbolic, but a lot of truth in that article.

I'm still stunned at the high R turnout. Full on tribal warfare.
Any hope that Rs wouldn't turn out was dashed by the Kavanaugh hearings. Sent people on both sides into fits of rage and IMO helped spur the huge early voting. Everyone wanted to vote ASAP as a big fuck you to the other side.

I have a few Facebook acquaintances who seem quite excited to vote for Cruz. It’s very much a “fuck you liberals” type vibe that I’m getting from them, rather than something personal about Cruz.

As someone who voted Dem in reliably Republican Midland County, I think I can pretty safely say that more than anything folks out here are simply straight ticket Republican voters. They look at you like you're an absolute loon if you even suggest the idea of voting for anyone who's not a republican. I don't care how good the Democratic candidate was, or even how conservative he was, I think it would be nearly impossible to cut into that straight ticket margin.
I would list the issues that I heard discussed by all of my Republican friends and co-workers, in order, as follows:
1) Guns
2) Immigration/caravan (lots of subtle and not so subtle racism in these comments)
3) General jabs at liberals/SJWs/MeToo/liberal women/Kavanagh, etc.
I'm sure religious conservatism and abortion underlie a lot of the undying devotion to the Republican brand, but those weren't hot topics of discussion this go round.
