  1. I turned off notifications in Windows 10 for my new computer to rid myself of recurring notifications I didn't want.  Now Surly gives me a bottom banner notification that www.surlyhorns.com wants to send you notifications, but first you need to go to Settings and turn on Notifications.  I went to account settings and clicked on the do not send me notifications.  I even signed out and back in.

How do I turn off the reminder from Surly to turn on notifications?  This is the type of garbage I was trying to stop.

  2. Just finished Mobile.  Really different British cop/crime four part miniseries.  Kind of confusing at first until you realize they are showing the same incidents through different people's perspective.

Aussie made City Homicide is also really good also.  I watch both with subtitles, as some accent variants can be difficult to follow.

Last time I flew with a guitar the gate agent at DFW tried to tell me it was too big for the overhead and that I had to check it. Having an aviation background myself, I told her that wasn't her call to make and demanded to speak to the crew. She called her manager over. I won.

I need to take that Telecaster back to Texas with me in a couple weeks. Seems like I write at least two songs on it every time I'm there. Not much else to do.

Was it a '52 tele, Jim?  You should write a song about it.  Maybe threaten to make her lose an arm.

Thanks for the correction. I read South Padre so I assume PINS.

Last night, Channel 24 Austin was reporting it as South Padre.  I had earlier heard outside of CC.  Big difference in locations.

Edit:  Looking at CC Caller Times, caller.com, who should know their local geography, it was in Kleberg County, which is no where near South Padre.

    I would go to Kody's.

When I have eaten there the food has been damn good and the onion rings are great too.

And they have a large room on the S side which is often empty at lunch time.  I don't know if you can reserve it. I'm a real fan of their fried oysters.

  6. I have some out of town lots that I can only mow about once a month.  Often, the grass has grown such that lots of loose grass remains on the ground.  I have thought about buying a bagging attachment for my Husqvarna 42" riding mower, but am concerned about one problem.  Since it is often long and the resultant clippings are long, would a bagger have a problem with the chute jamming with the longer blades of grass?

What sort of problems would I expect on such infrequent mowing?  Any other suggestions beyond raking and bagging manually?

Believe much of the animation was done in Austin.

Yes, Minnow Mountain in Austin did part of the animation.  A company in the Netherlands also contributed, but, although I have heard, I didn't get exactly how it was all done.  With shooting and vocals in LA, it is an example of how the Internet makes world cooperation possible.

Co-creator and writer Kate Purdy grew up in San Antonio, thus the setting of the series.

Probably should try giving United a call. My wife could not get home after Harvey due to the airport being shut down. United allowed waivers to Austin, Dallas, and San Antonio but as you would imagine, those flights were full. I called United to route her to JAC since her parents have a vacation home there. The first representative I spoke to would not do it, so I asked for a supervisor who cleared the ticket without me having to ask twice.

It makes sense. United, or any airline except AA, should want to clear up itineraries when weather disrupts over multiple days.

We were in NYC for Spring Break this year.  Our round trip flight was with American, and we got hit with the 737 MAX grounding.  They changed our flight back to SA twice, splitting us up both times.  This was unacceptable to us, as we were flying with two children.  My daughter posted our dilemma to AA's twitter feed.  She got a call back within an hour and we got our return flight back seated together.  We did have to change planes (original flight NS) but that was not as important.

You forgot to tell folks to RIDE THE BUS from Barton Creek Mall or tennis courts at Guadalupe/51st street.  Bus takes you to the big fountain on the south side of the Tower, drops you off 2 blocks from the stadium and picks you up after the end of the 3rd qtr....$10, kids under 13 free.  No hassle, no parking problem.

OR....just tell Herman to blow out the other team by the end of the 3rd qtr., and people can slowly, methodically,  sashay your butt out so errrbody don't leave at the same time...fwiw.

Littlefield Fountain for anyone who went to the University.

Marty Stuart is a good choice to be Shelby Foote of this series.  His knowledge of country music is on par with anyone's.

As usual, Burns knew whom to interview.  Douglas Green (Ranger Doug) has written books on the singing cowboys, Bill Malone has written often about the whole genre, and Ray Benson is an expert on Bob Wills and Texas Swing.

I noticed the second episode seemed to have longer song clips, which I find a positive.

September 12, 1909—100 years ago today—a country singer named Kenneth Threadgill, who turned a service station into a tavern that later became a music venue that launched the careers of such stars as Janis Joplin, was born in Peniel. He moved to Austin in 1933 and began working at the service station he later bought. After World War II, he turned it into what became a legendary venue. He wrote sang such songs as “Silver-Haired Daddy of Mine,” “T for Texas, T for Tennessee,” and in the early 1980s, appeared and sang with Willie Nelson in the film “Honeysuckle Rose.” He died in 1987.

"Silver Haired Daddy of Mine" was co-written by Gene Autry and Jimmy Long.  "T for Texas" aka Blue Yodel No. 1 was written by Jimmie Rodgers, the Singin' Brakeman.  Rodgers was Threadgill's musical hero and he sang and yodeled in Rodgers' style.

Threadgill used to perform for free on campus on occasion in the late '60s and early '70s.  He performed regularly at the Split Rail on S. Lamar.  A documentary was made about him called "Singing the Yodeling Blues."

Took Nelda a few tries.  I was in high school with her son, who was born shortly after her graduation from Samuell.  His name was Jones, and that might have been another classmate of yours.

I think so -- football player from my class. Not sure as I was in Austin by August of 1965 and never again lived in Big D.

Checked Texas births on Ancestry.com.  Yes, his father was a football player in WWS class of '65.

CNBC had a nice tribute to "Boone".

    Married 5 times... DAMN!!

    RIP🙏🙏🙏

His third wife, Nelda Cain Pickens, was a junior Cheerleader my senior year in high school (1965, W W Samuell, Dallas.)  I only casually knew her (not the same circles) and haven't seen or talked to her since. Two siblings made good, as her sister Nancy married Jeffrey Marcus, of the Nieman Marcus family. Upper atmosphere society for a couple of lower middle class SE Dallas girls.
