  1. I wasn't there. Please flesh out Bevo leading the team in. How far on the field did he run? I always thought Runnin' Ralphie was a cool tradition. Bevo coming out of the tunnel is pretty darn cool, too. That and the taming of jumbotron might get me back in the stadium.

  2. In LA for bidness, had a day to kill so went for about the 10th time. I'm an old so the rides are not that important to me, although it brings awe to my old heart thinking how many/most of the old rides are "analogue". Designed, engineered and built long before computers. Gears, pulleys, cams, pneumatics..all mechanical. Small World is simply a magnificent machine. Dumbo, a stunning beautiful machine. The landscaping is a world class garden. I walked around the corner from Pirates ride and there was a 5 piece band performing sea shantys, or is it chanties. All 5 wonderful musicians and singers. Front man played tin whistle. Wonderful. Where else can you hear rare vintage music performed by world class musicians. It it was a spiritual experience. Then around another corner there was world class Dixieland. The amount and quality of music tempers the expensive price of admission.

  3. I clean and maintain my equipment, but viscous liquids are a problem. Maybe it's because I am spraying trees and have to tilt the reservoir to spray upwards. Maybe I just need to keep it at least 3/4 full at all times. Pain in the butt, but may be the only way.

  4. Anyone have a tip on a sprayer for viscous material? I have a couple that fit on a hose and neither does a good job with thick liquids like neem oil or Safer soap. I prefer to us these less toxic insecticides if possible. The ones I have just don't seem to be able to lift the thick liquid up the tube that goes in the container.

I inherited a Rainbow from my brother many, many years ago.  It worked (works) fine, but that nasty water reservoir after using was just not fun to dispose of / clean basin.  Bought myself a cheap (~$100) Dyson knock off (Shark) vacuum some years ago and you know what?  It works just as well for my needs.  Rainbow has been gathering dust in a closet ever since.

My thinking is the opposite. When you flush the dirty water from the Rainbow, the dust and dirt is confined to the water. When you empty a waterless vac, the dust and dirt "puffs" all over you and the area where you are, and when you change the bag it is a dust storm.

  6. Reading the news I had to go to The Night Hawk one last time. This location is not really the one that I remember. "My" location was the one on Guadalupe. My grandmother took me there. My mother took me there. I took my kids there. This one hurts.

The wait today was only about 10 minutes. It was worth it simply for the sake of tradition. It was a little strange in there. The Akins were walking around greeting folks. It was a cross between a party and a funeral.

  7. Damn it all!! The Night Hawk closing hurts. I didn't go there often, maybe every 2-3 years, but my grandparents took me there. My mother loved The Down South burger. we had many. I introduced my son to the family tradition and his comment on the closing is "The absolute fuck is wrong with this word?!" I'm proud of the boy.

  8. Jesus. I rode home on the bus from O. Henry Jr. High, as did Moment Armistead. She lived down the street, so sometimes we would get off the bus at the same time. She was pretty. I wanted to walk with her, but I was to shy and frightened to ask if she want me to join her. Plus, she was a year younger and I would have been mercilessly teased by any of my friends who saw me walking with a younger girl...you know those unwritten rules of 8th-9th grade boys. I heard, much later...remember I'm talking Jr. High and her death was during college years...that she had jumped. I never read the story. Sometimes she and her sisters would come yell at me from the street while I was in my room. Just goofy Jr. High stuff. I was sort of embarrassed that they were watching me, but at the same time sort of thrilled that they thought I was worth the effort. Jesus.

  9. How we do love to fight here at Surly. Semantics and shit. I read a similar fight on a gin page I was reading.  The subject was vermouth or no. One fighter made an interesting, I thought, comment that if you insist that there be no vermouth you are simply drinking chilled gin, not a Martini. Nothing wrong with chilled gin, or chilled vodka for that matter. Personal preference, however, add some stuff to it. I enjoy the ritual...I even use fancy assed Bulgarian crystal glasses and mix/shake in a 60+ year old shaker I inherited from my peeps.  Part of the fun.

  10. Let's do. I was a Beefeater Gibson fan, but am now enamored with Citadel and, well Noilly Prat just because that's what I have on hand. Let's talk about vermouth and what it adds. I know, I know...just wave the bottle over the glass. Let's talk "dirty" or not. What brand of olive and cocktail onion. I like shaken. Evidently I like the "bruising" because I like those tiny shards of ice. Tanquerey is just too antiseptic for me.  Tell me what your favorites are and why.
