  1. Greg Cosell doesn't watch much Michigan football. Michigan was screen adverse. Drove me nuts when you would have numbers on the outside and they would still run it up the middle. But no they didn't take it out of his hands "often" on 3rd and long.

I can really only think of one play that they ran it on 3rd and long and that was against penn state when they were in the middle of 30 straight runs.

Something about a world where you don’t care about winning your conference seems awful.

For me, when Michigan first won the B1G a few years ago, it was cool to get in the playoffs, even if they got bombed by UGA, but winning the B1G was huge. I am sure Texas fans feel the same way about it this year.

Winning it all is insanely difficult, but hopefully teams will still want to be the B1G or SEC champ and realize that is an incredible feat.

You may get those absolute Machine UGA teams that only have one goal of winning it all or the season is a failure, but hopefully most teams don't feel that way.

I was bored and piece this together for how this past year would have played out

I used the "also receiving notes" of the AP poll to seed out the bottom teams.

First two rounds higher seed host the games on campus. Semis and finals are at a rotation of NY6 bowls.

Pretty good chance the final 4 would have ended up the same, looking at that bracket. The only real games until the semis would have been OSU vs Washington, and UGA vs Texas.

This could be resolved by the B12, ACC and G5 breaking away and having their own playoff, with as many teams as they want. It will still be popular, like Texas 5A is a big deal, even though there is still a 6A.

I think something like this is probably the end game.

SEC/B1G end up as two 20 team conferences, and their playoff is made up of their 4 or 8 best teams at the end. ACC/pac2 and B12 end up with their own playoff, and we are back to split national championships. Although would be sweet to have to two playoff champs face off champions league style. If there is money it will come.

adding some incoherent rambling about what it could look like.

SEC/B1G are the decision makers, 8 slots left for football, ND is going to have to join somewhere or get left out eventually. They already miss out on any chance at a bye. FSU/Clemson/Miami/UNC seem like the most likely ACC options, but not sure UNC would ever leave Duke. Utah/OkState/Kstate/TCU??? from the new b12

Going to 16 teams will ensure that every team needs to play 3 games to win the title. That will drastically impact the regular season. I could see conference championship games going away since the top teams will essentially play an NFL schedule.

    Isn't it 4 games?

    Round of 16

    Round of 8

    Semis

    Final

I think we'll see some wiggling around of 9-12 rankings, maybe even 5-12, to affect seeding and prevent rematches.

ahhh the ole TCU jumps 4 spots with a loss over Ohio State to get the 3 seed move.

Probably. With so many teams, we are going to end up seeing a lot of rematches. In some years you could get 3x Michigan/Ohio State and Texas/UGA Texas/Bama UGA/Bama.

I love that we get more meaningful football. Bowl games have sucked ass recently for the most part, but definitely some dilution of how big games are. Michigan/Ohio State the past two years has been insanely hyped and I loved it. Knowing that they were going to end up playing in back to back weeks would have made those first games pointless.

I know it is 100% impossible because of TV deals, but why even play that first game in the future? Both teams would be holding back, knowing that the CCG is the one that matters. I know it is unlikely to happen too often where you have 11-0 teams playing each other in the final game of the year, but it has happened the past two years (3 if you count the 11-0 vs 10-1 winner take all game in 2021)

Eventually they are going to have to move that game off of the final regular season game, and that will suck.

  7. I know it is just projections, but I don't think it is outrageous to think that Oregon, Texas, Michigan and Bama have a good chance to all be better than Clemson or Utah next year. Obviously you want the bye, but the 5 seed has a really good chance to make the semis every year by beating the g5 team and then the worst conference champ.

    (12) Liberty at (5) Oregon
Winner advances to play (4) Utah

    (11) Ole Miss at (6) Texas
Winner advances to play (3) Clemson

    (10) Notre Dame at (7) Michigan
Winner advances to play (2) Ohio State

    (9) Penn State at (8) Alabama
Winner advances to play (1) Georgia

So Top 4 ranked conf champs get first round bye? really?  that sounds not optimal.

Yeah, I don't love that. More years than not you are going to give a buy to a team that isn't "deserving" a 9-3 "new" b12 champ shouldn't be getting a bye over a 12-1 SEC/B1G championship game loser.

I imagine this is going to put an end to conference championship games, so conferences can protect their best teams and push them through with a bye.

I guess give it time, but there should only be 2 conference champions that are given byes and then 2 at large for byes.

12-1 UGA and 12-1 Texas next year with 1 loss each against each other, shouldn't have to play an extra game so Utah can have a bye.

Holy shit, I just read the mock that Fud posted from Daniel Jeremiah. He has the Falcons, at 8, taking McCarthy. That's fucking absurd. The breathless, serious way in which the different NFL draft guys have started talking about McCarthy is comical. It's based on Harbaugh pimping the guy as some sort of wizard with William Wallace-esque leadership skills.

"A lot of people around the NFL expect the Falcons to be aggressive when it comes to finding a quarterback in this year’s draft. They could trade up or, as they do in this case, stay at No. 8 and bet on McCarthy’s traits." (emphasis mine)

Anybody think he's talking about arm talent or accuracy? If he was, he'd also be touting Michael Penix, who is elite with both skils and above McCarthy on both by a lot. How about his speed and elusiveness? McCarthy's a decent runner and all, but he's isn't on the same level as Daniels or Williams. So what is it, then? Ahhh, yes, it's those intangibles again. Just like Jay Barker and Stetson Bennett.

It would just about perfect for a longhorn with major star potential to get further saddled with a shitty QB partner in the backfield, so, sure, I guess the Falcons will draft this dud.

Youre hate for JJ is hilarious. To say Penix is better than JJ with Talent and Accuracy is the dumbest thing I have read on this site, and that is saying a lot.

Everyone thinks he is going in the 1st round. He has been climbing into the top 10, but you keep saying he just isn't good. NFL teams are lacking by not scooping you up for your sick insight.

Three of the last four drafts had several QBs go in the first round, but I guess it depends on how you define "super QB heavy"

Howell wasn't a first rounder at this point in the process, by the way

The 2022 class was extremely weak, so people were trying to figure out how many teams would reach. This isn't the 2022 QB class.

I don't watch enough UNC football to say, but Maye seems to be a slightly better version than Howell. He could also end up being Trey Lance or Zach Wilson.

Caleb Williams isn't a franchise QB from what I have seen. Does he have talent? Absolutely, but he also seems to be fine with losing as long as he puts up stats. Seems to have a bit of Kyler Murray syndrome.

My love for JJ is pretty obvious. He won't be the first QB taken, but maybe he should be. He can make all the throws, he can move and improvise and he cares about his teammates and winning, not the stats.

Daniels to me is a slightly more polished Richardson. He could be a really good QB in the pros, he could also be out of the league in 4 years. If you are trying to hit a home run, he is probably the pick.

Gun to my head I take JJ ahead of those other 3. Maybe that gets me killed, but he is good enough that the worst case he is going to have the Chad Henne, Drew Stanton, Colt McCoy NFL path where he will be in the league for a hell of a long time and not be a liability. No one is drafting a QB in the first round to be a backup, but at least that is his floor. I can't say that about the other dudes.

There are more Trey Lance, Zach Wilson, Mack Jones, Kenny Picket, Desmond Ridders in this draft than there are Burrow, Tua and Herberts IMO.

    Malik Willis #2

Most mocks had him in the top 10. He went in the 3rd round.

Levis was going to be a top 10 pick, he slid out of the first.

Sam Howell was going to be the first QB taken. Pick 144

Teams overvalue QBs 100% but its amplified by the mock drafts hyping dudes that no one in the NFL believe in.

It still doesn’t really add up. The ‘22 QB draft class was one of the weaker in recent memory. Purdy was Big12 freshman of the year. Two-Time All Big12, first team his Jr year. Two time Davey O’Brien finalist. He had three years of really great tape. Pickett & Howell went 1st and 3rd round, guys with no real elite traits.

There is no amount of internet arguing that could ever convince me that JJ is not better than Kenny Pickett at every aspect of being a QB. If Pickett is a first round QB, JJ should be.

Not sure how it got to Purdy vs JJ. But my argument will stay that JJ will be a better NFL QB than Daniels or Caleb. I would 100% take him over those guys.

The 2 pick 6s vs TCU were horrible, but I think people overvalue those two picks, and the pick that never, was on the first play of the bama game, and think JJ is some game manager. That isn't the case, he has a rocket, can move and throws strikes on the run.

Iowa State's success was in large part due to a DC who revolutionized anti-spread defenses in college, and stumped most of the big twelve offensive brain trusts for a few years

Iowa State also opened up 2021 with Brock Purdy not throwing a TD in the first two games. One of which they lost. He must suck. Thank god for that UNLV slump buster or he may have went 3 games without a TD. The horror.

  15. Of the 8 Super Bowls won by teams with QBs who didn't throw a TD.

    Namath, Aikman, Elway, Manning, Brady.

Those are all hall of fame QBs. One might even say they were great. Their teams didn't need them to win a super bowl. That doesn't mean they are not great. That is your argument, Michigan won without needing him, so he must suck. Namath, Aikman, Elway, Manning, Brady all had teams that won without needing them, so they must suck.

Their teams didn't lose, and didn't need them to win. Don't tell me 5 hall of fame QBs aren't great when that's not reality.

  16. 2 minutes ago, BurntOrange&White said:

That's the point....Michigan didn't lose and didn't need him to win. Don't tell me he's such a great QB when that's not reality.

    They aren't tied together though.

He can be a good QB, and Michigan can also win without him. Both of those can be true. They aren't mutually exclusive.

I want QB's who don't go 3 games without scoring a single TD.

Why? Did Michigan lose any of those games? Isn't winning the ultimate goal in football?

    QB 1 9/21, 123 yards, 0 TD, 2 INT

    QB 226/49 273 yards, 1TD, 1 INT.

One of those QBs won the Super Bowl.
8 times the team that won the super bowl, won without their QB throwing a TD. If you don't need to, you don't

You don't think Pete Carrol wishes he would have rushed beast mode instead of throwing a pick to Malcom Butler in the super bowl?

  18. 1 minute ago, BurntOrange&White said:

We shouldn't be using QBR a stat that was made up by ESPN to justify QBs. Especially considering that it's so flawed.

Yards per attempt seems to be the best stat currently for QBs, Unless you want just straight video game numbers of TDs for QBs that throw 40+ passes a game.

JJ was a full yard per attempt higher than Purdy for his career and almost 2 yards per attempt higher than Purdy in each of their last two systems.

Air Raid QBs are going to have higher stats than pro style QBs. If you throw 20 passes for 200 yards IMO that is better than throwing 40 passes for 20 yards.

In the 3 game stretch that JJ didn't throw a TD. How many games of those did Michigan lose? Why throw the ball if you don't have to. 4 things can happen when you throw, a completion, an incompletion, a sack and an interception. If you can run the ball, you don't need to throw.

Seems pretty clear cut to me that Brock was a superior QB on a much lesser talented team than Michigan.

JJ has a better Y/A, Rating, and rushing average. Your stats say the opposite.

Purdy has the volume stats. JJ has all the stats that are independent of volume.

    i stand corrected

this means 8 of 12 3rd-place teams will make the round of 32 so we are playing 72 games to eliminate 16 teams

Yeah I don't love this. It is going to set up some wacky elimination matchups. Winner of A vs 3rd place in B. Draw is going to be more important for the round of 32 than for making it out of qualifying. I think there are going to be a few of the 8 3rd place teams that move forward by clutching onto 2 draws.

  23. Could be a little good news for Texas fans and bad news for Michigan fans. Mason Graham is staying at Michigan. Kenny Grant is still "fielding offers" Michigan needs to do whatever they can to bring him back. They created the one more year fund last year and kept the O-line in tact which they absolutely needed this year. This season they need to do it to keep their defense here. They lose a few players but should return a top 1-2 defense again next year. KG is a key cog in that working.
