  1. The 1993 Cotton Bowl renovations cost $3m and the consensus a few years later was that $2m of that was the cost to rip out the rug, dig out the concrete to a depth of 48 inches, crown the field with a fresh concrete pour to a height of 12" running from end to end, install a 3"-hour-rainfall-rate drainage system, put down the plumbing for 24 rotor sprinklers, and fill it in with 30 inches of pure blackland prairie.  The turf is Pro Tour Perennial Ryegrass Blend from Forbes Seed and Grain in Junction City, Oregon, that now stands at a thickness of 8 inches, with 3-inch blades above soil.  If you have never walked on it, it feels more like a sponge than earth.  It is so dense that thousands of pounds of beef in the trenches can barely scuff it during the fair park game.  It consumes HUGE amounts of water.  The annual maintenance cost is $2m, in essence, now, for only 1 game a year that matters.

Back in the day when the Dallas Burn played at the Cotton Bowl ('96-'03, '04, first half of '05), the consensus among the entirety of MLS, including players, coaches, and staff from more than 30 countries, was that the Fair Park pitch was the best in the league and easily top 10 worldwide.

Dear CDC: that will be $9.95.

  3. hutchins mckinney update

    cat. bag. out of.

sunday morning, 11am, line 30 deep, but drive through moving rapidly, had a pound of fatty, pound of lean, and 2 pounds of turkey (their turkey is spec-tac-ular).

only problem?  brisket is now $20/pound, bird $15/pound.

and why not?  spring creek and dickey's over on 75 are EMPTY at 1130 when i drive by.

  4. i hate vegas with a passion.  just spent 5 days inside the venetian/palazzo/sands-expo.  both are fantastic hotels and have endless restaurant options.  but vegas has been overrun by the ghetto.  not intending to be racist, but i've never seen more cholas, ink, fat hanging out of "clothes", in one place, at one time, in my entire life.  people with extremely low intellect, moving in random packs, stopping in the middle of aisles, basically making it impossible to get from anywhere to anywhere, including parking garage to check-in.  in fact, i think i saw more bridge and tunnel 2 weeks ago last night than i have previously in my entire life, by a factor of 1000.  by day 2 i managed to figure out the hacks to get to the sands by avoiding the casino which lowered my blood pressure.

odds?  vegas doesn't have to compete any more.  when the economy is good, they can fleece the lowest common denominator, feed the whales, and the rest of us can get fucked.

parking situation as of 1 year ago in LA Times (buncha places free) (article has links to guide to best pool scenes + guides to other stuff):

    http://www.latimes.com/travel/deals/la-tr-las-vegas-free-parking-20170413-story.html

i would never spend my own money to go to vegas.  things i do when there on business to entertain others:

always rent a car from **** using the **** code for $***/day

arrive by 11am and you can have a great first day OFF THE STRIP.....1st stop the las vegas sign on the south strip for selfies; 2nd stop drive by the Sands Air Force FBO and gawk at the SPs, have never had a chance during m-f/8-5 to ask for a tour; 3rd stop right around the corner, see if the gate is open to drive down the side of the janet terminal and geek out.  4th stop, Atomic Museum, 5th stop check in, then drive to the 6th stop the desert view point by Mt. Charleston, gawk at the test site (1 time i got to see the T-birds practicing which from this vantage point is forking awesome), and get to 7th stop Red Rocks before they let the last car in at 6pm (typically).  8th stop downtown Summerlin or Redrocks Casino for food, 9th stop cruise Fremont just after sunset, 10th stop ******* pm for data, not sharing the last one publically, same as the best-value hotel.

the venetian and the palazzo are very good value for the quality; i will share by PM my secret go-to lodging location that's even better value.

No reason for the change yet

Conmebol, the South American confederation, announced that 12 teams -- 10 Conmebol members and two guest teams -- will play in the 2019 Copa America in Brazil.

The USA and Mexico, which has been invited to every tournament since 1993, won't be going. Instead, Qatar, the 2022 World Cup host, and Japan, which is expected to send an underage team in preparation for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, will participate.

They will join Brazil and nine other South American countries, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela.

Issues related to the release of players -- guest teams can't force clubs to release players -- have always presented a problem for the USA, which has not played in the Copa America since 2007 when it sent a "B" team to Colombia after winning the Gold Cup under new head coach Bob Bradley.

Reports out of Mexico suggested that Conmebol and Concacaf could not reach an agreement on dates so the tournaments wouldn't overlap. The 2019 Copa America will take place June 14-July 7. Concacaf has not announced the dates -- or venues -- of the 2019 Gold Cup, but FIFA lists the Concacaf event as falling on the same dates as the Copa America.

(The Africa Cup of Nations 2019 will be moved into June, leaving the AFC Asian Cup, scheduled to be played Jan. 5-Feb. 1, as the only winter regional championship.)

The 2015 Gold Cup -- the last Concacaf championship played in the same year as the Copa America -- was played in July. The USA finished fourth and generally played poorly throughout the tournament.

One of the issues then-head coach Jurgen Klinsmann raised about playing in July was bringing in players from Europe, where they had just returned from vacation and were starting preseason training.

Not having Mexico in the Copa America is a big blow for Conmebol and Riccardo Silva's MP & Silva, which was recently awarded Copa America 2019 commercial rights. El Tri's participation generates big rights fees from networks in Mexico and the USA.

Klinsmann deserves some blame for failing to qualify. But the bulk of the blame for that failure falls on the lap of Arena. 4 points in the final 4 games, completely unacceptable given who those games were against.

And while he deserves some of the blame (see above) and he might not be the best messenger, he's not wrong in what he is saying. This is why I posted it.

just a quick reminder that klinsmann was less than 20 seconds away from becoming only the 2nd US manager in history to win 2 in a row at the world cup.  all michael bradley has to do is hoof the ball in to the stands and ronaldo doesn't get off a miracle cross.

  7. fucking candies

despite ties to pool i pulled for them when they brought in joe-max moore and gave donovan a run... but no honor today in this performance.  shame on sam.

The 2013 game was a poor call, but questionable IIRC.  Texas has dealt with these for years (Melton scored vs Ohio State).  The officials within the conference seem to forget to call holding against our opponents (OU/Tech) and now OSU.   The OSU game was special in that they took away most of the big plays/turnovers/fumble recoveries for Texas including awarding a recovery to the quarterback who arrived late to the pile and stuck arm in and apparently pulled the ball away from 4-5 Texas players.   It wasn’t poor officiating or a mistake here or there, it was outright predetermined.   Someone posted how that crew officiated Texas games in the past and it deviated from the norm, both for opponents and against Texas by a wide margin.   Shit, our game vs USC last year seemed to demonstrate two different rules for what Pass Interference is.

Mack was correct that officiating needed to be NCAA  based, not conference based.

the 3rd call on the tape..... wounded duck tossed, picked, and returned 40 yards.  crowd going berserk.  NOOP.  oSu qb breathed on, takes 2 steps backwards, doesn't fall down, not hit, BARELY TOUCHED..... roughing.

    jk/lol.

    This

I don't buy that.  If tboone were serious about buying a title we would have seen evidence of it.  "for" fixings are usually done quietly with players on the opposing side; you rarely see the fire, only the smoke.  "against" fixings are extremely rare because they require institutional agency; here you get smoke and fire.  tboone could easily rig bedlam with pocket change.  hasn't happened.  we would have seen it, and it would have been a national firestorm (pun accidental).

From watching the clip of that 2015 OSU game, I don't think it was rigged at the start

the very first call on the tape.  Center #74 called for holding by a line judge who was in frame and never looking BACK AND TO THE LEFT when he threw the flag while trailing our runner on the sideline 88 feet away from where #74 completed his blocking assignment.

Imagine that kind of shit all day long  in order to get Teaff a 21-20 win in his final game.  Most infuriating game ever.

i don't blame oSu for the '15 game.  i do hold rapelor responsible for the '92 game.

i'm going to ahead and say it.

'92 was about getting a win for teaff in a pointless game for us

'15 was about getting a loss for strong in a critical game for us

they are 2 different things.  and i'll go even further.

i have no doubt that aggy were the paymasters for the '15 game.

a successful black coach in austin is a nightmare aggy could never wake up from.

that aggy were behind it was evidenced by the complete and total embargo that day in the national media... broadcast, online, print.  unless you were a horn and you watched it live or read horn fansites, you never know it happened.  it was so incendiary in it's overt "fuck you" that it simply couldn't be discussed nationally.

why?  why was that?  the media *love* this kind of controversy.

    crickets.

  12. justa reminder that everton need 2 wins by 13 goals and 2 burnley losses for the last europa slot so this lollygag by everton to start bodes well for soton.... everton are not going for it and have thrown in the towel.

congratulations motherhumping BURNLEY for making europe.  from their wiki:

Burnley F.C. (/ˈbɜːrnli/) is a professional association football club based in Burnley, Lancashire, England. Founded in 1882, the club plays in the Premier League, the first tier of English football. Nicknamed The Clarets, due to the dominant colour of their home shirts, they were one of the founding members of the Football League in 1888.[1]

Burnley have been champions of England twice, in 1920–21[2] and 1959–60,[3] have won the FA Cup once, in 1914, and have won the Community Shield twice, in 1960 and 1973. The Clarets also reached the 1961 quarter-finals of the European Cup. They are one of only five teams to have won all top four professional divisions of English football, along with Wolverhampton Wanderers, Preston North End, Sheffield United and Portsmouth.[4]

Burnley have played home games at Turf Moor since 17 February 1883.[5] The club colours of claret and blue were adopted prior to the 1910–11 season in tribute to the dominant club of English football at the time, Aston Villa.[6]

Their current manager, Sean Dyche, was appointed on 30 October 2012.[7]

  13. Cameron is 32 so he is done for the nats.  He should go for one last payday, which may just be where he is.  As stated by Robbie Earle postgame they have spent close to 100m in the last few years.  They will believe they can get back up.

  14. for fellow bitchassed USians (i might as well go full gonzo)....

    tomorrow's national broadcasting corporation slate:

0630 NBCSN - must watch - Stoke, played 36, on 30, host safePalace; Stoke live to match 46 with a draw, but with a loss are potentially relegated by a Soton win @Everton 3 hours later

0900 NBCSN - must watch - Swansea, played 35, on 33, @safeBournemouth; nothing can be decided for Swansea on the day, but a win on the road drags Ham and Hudd in to the mire pending their results.

1130 NBC - must watch - Soton, played 35, on 32, @suddenlyinwiththeslimmestchancetopipBurnleyforEuropaEverton; again, a win on the road is bad for Ham and Hudd; Burnley/Arsenal is Sunday, so Everton will want 3 as badly as Soton, and hope Arsenal gets a dead cat bounce from Thursday and keeps the last Europa spot in play.  Anything less than 3 for Everton tomorrow and european nights at Turf Moor are confirmed.  I like Sean Dyche.  Burnley are going to have a hard time keeping him.
