There were two families running the stands if I remember correctly. One who put like 5 kids through UT (that also worked at the stands), and the other family that was selling stolen goods. I believe they originally were in front of the Co-Op. I did eat at both, but for me, the real deal was the one at Littlefield fountain.

I was engineering so mine was the spot at 26th & Speedway...

Yep.  The change from 48 to 64 teams in the field happened in '99.  This was when the Super Regionals were created.

I was at the 2000 Super Regionals when we hosted Penn St, I believe and won only to be 2 & BBQ in the CWS...

    I like the symmetry of the current 4-team tournament, 2-team best-of-3-series, 4-team tournament, 2-team best-of-3-series format.

But I actually MUCH preferred the 6-team regionals from the late 80s through the late 90s.  It was an incredibly fun, festival atmosphere with so many diverse teams and fan bases, in a 6-game double elimination tournament that could last almost a week.  I found that to be a lot more fun than the 4-team regional and then a 2-team super-regional.

Was this before Super Regionals?  ie, the winner of the 6 team regional made it to the CWS?  48 teams making the tourney...

Just booked my trip.  I'm going up Saturday evening and coming back Wednesday morning so I can see the first two games.  Only hotel I could get was Quality Inn in Council Bluffs, but fuck it I'm not planning on spending much time there and it looks convenient to Downtown and the ball park.  I really wanted my daughter to come with me she is a big Horns fan and is the only one who will go to the baseball games with me.  She was with me for the regional and the final game of the super regional.  Unfortunately, she has a summer program that starts Monday morning and I can't find any flight that will get her back in time so she could at least see the Sunday game.

Any advice from the CWS veterans?  Should I go ahead and try to round up tickets or wait until game day?

Definitely wait until game time for the 2nd game.

And Council Bluffs is a super short drive. My 1st year in 2002, we stayed in Omaha but ate lunch at one of the casinos in Council Bluffs (and we gambled of course). I think it was the Harrahs.  It turns out that the Miami Hurricanes were having their team meal at the casino too at the buffet. It was our impression that the team, players, coaches were all staying at the casino. Classic Miami.

The original double elimination format was better, not two brackets just straight up undefeateds in the winner bracket three straight rounds and a massive dog fight in the losers bracket. The drama in the losers bracket was so intense. No reset after surviving a 4 team bracket, you had to make it all the way through perfect including beating an undefeated twice in a row at the end to win the title.

I prefer this method because what if the teams we are playing are better than the teams in the other half? The winner in the other half isn't playing our teams so let's reset and do best of 3.

Arkansas is really good, playing them on Sunday will be a tremendous challenge.  I think the Horns are quite a bit better than they were back in mid-March but I can understand piggy confidence for this one.  It's up to the Horns to change that.  I like our chances.

Kendall Rogers had them as his team to win it all. They are good.

Is it bad that the '09 CWS still pisses me off?

I haven't gotten over that 9th inning in game 1 when we brought in Taylor Jungmann.... He had a great game2 but we pissed away game1...

It was a double elimination tournament. Losing for the first time shouldn't eliminate you.

Today, the CWS is basically an 8 team Regionals/Super Regionals.  We have 2 4-team double-elimination "Regionals" going on separate from one another.  And then the 2 winners play in a best 2-of-3 "Super Regionals". Since 2003, you can actually lose 2 times and still win it all....

And I really like the setup now.

It might have been posted before, but Augie's 1st title in 2002 was the last year of the winner take all title game.  We entered that game against South Carolina with 0 losses in the 4-team double elimination set up with wins over Rice, Stanford 2-times. That was also the last year the CWS finals were on CBS (all the other games leading up were on espn).

  9. I also don't know why Tesla is trying to do this on their own.

Focus on the cars and the batteries. Let Google/Waymo, Tesla (although they might be warming up with Waymo) figure it out and then license it.

I give it 5 years minimum before full self driving is at a point where it is actually somewhat viable.  The tech may get there sooner, but having to account for the vast majority of other cars not being self-driving seems to be one of the biggest barriers, IMO.  One of my biggest questions is how the AI does with anticipation of events.

I think what is mostly likely is we might see autonomous driving car only zones like in downtown areas. If all of the cars on the same OS then there are fewer variables of the other vehicles.

You still have dipshits on foot though...

  11. In 2004 I had gradated from grad school so we could afford to fly.  But we flew to Kansas City and rented a car from there.  We booked last second with a Southwest voucher back when you could buy vouchers from people (since we booked last minute we had to go Southwest). But SWA didn't have an Austin to Omaha flight back then.

Rosenblatt was a treasure.  I want to take my oldest to CWS but work is crazy right now.  Sombitch.

  12. I went for the 1st weekend in 2003 & 2004.  I was in grad school then but worked in a research lab.  I rented a car and we left after I got out of work that day.  Like 5pm.  Drove through the night.  Slept in a McDonald's parking lot in Kansas.  Made it to Omaha in time to check in our hotel, grab a styrofoam cooler and beers and make it for Texas' opening game against Miami. Which we won.  Then hit up Council Bluffs for gambling.

    Good times.

We made it to the 1st game the next day (no Texas) and then left after it and drove home. I think we got home Sunday night around 2am.  I remember listening to WOAI and the Spurs beat the Nets that night for their 2nd NBA Title...

I'm sure the rental car company was shocked since we drove from Austin to Omaha and only had the rental from 5pm on Friday to when they opened on Monday morning. We put over 1700 miles in a weekend.

I can't believe they both died the same way.

I've heard Dr. Drew talk about it.  I'm not surprised they both went out the same way. Sounds like a lot of doctors are mixing pain killers with sleeping drugs and it's a dangerous combo (I'm not a doctor, if I butchered that seek your medical professional).

That does in fact suck.  Glass lenses or plastic?  And yeah, I definitely keep a backup pair in the truck - some $5 wayfarer clones (not as good as the real thing, but they were $5) I bought at the.... whatever the place is with the smaller shark across the street from the Islander in Port A.

Glass lenses. Day 1 not even on the beach...

Yeah, I get the whole "you're paying for the brand it's an overpriced chunk of plastic" thing, but I've had the same pair of wayfarers for coming on 3 years and they're still in great shape and function perfectly.  The plastic frames have some road rash in a few spots, but the lenses are unmarred.

I have the Wayfarer piano black ones...  Last summer we got to Port Royal in Port Aransas and about an hour after getting in the room we are loading up for the beach.  As we are walking from the parking lot/garage, my sunglasses fall off my head and shatter one of the lenses.  Day 1.  And this is what you need sunglasses for...  Fortunately I have a back up pair of old Oakleys in my SUV and used those.  One benefit of the Ray Bans is you can pop new lenses in.  It's a bit of a bitch but doable.

Took the fam (to Port Royal) for opening weekend June 1-4, just got back.  Fantastic trip!

This is an awesome writeup!  Thanks for the update.

My friend owns a 2 bedroom/2 bath condo on the top floor overlooking both the pool and ocean but mostly viewing/directed towards the pool.

When we went last summer, we spent all of our time at the beach, the pool, or our room.  We were there 3 nights and didn't venture out to eat; just made food at the condo. But this year we are going 6 nights and plan to do more stuff...

  17. 1st week in with Directv Now and I'm really happy.  I'm also happy with the Roku Ultra. I actually like it more than my Fire Stick.  Still don't know why Amazon hasn't added a volume button and tv power button...

My kids have yet to even turn on DTV Now. They use the apps like Cartoon Network (which I think needs my DTV Now at&t account to fully unlock).

Got an email saying I’ve exceeded my data limits on ATT internet. Plan is 1024 gb/month. Called them up and asked them for a waiver because I now have DTVnow and am streaming my tv through them, so I shouldn’t get charged by the same company for using their shit. Jake from Manila submitted the waiver request and it’s pending, but something to think about going forward.

Also requested an upgrade to 1000mbps down with unlimited data (for only $10 more/month) so should be covered if request fails.

I noticed that as well. And I was wondering if my DTV Now would eat up my data.  I can't get 1000mbps down b/c of my distance to their box.  But I wonder if I can get the unlimited data plan...
