Nope.  just one sock and you're good.  I really like the Smartwool Medium Ski socks.  Very worth it.

    Seconded.

Just for guidance sake - here's my layering setup for anywhere with highs between 20-35:

    Chewbacca's socks

Icebreaker midweight merino wool bottom and top base layer (boot height bottoms)

Patagonia gore tex pants and shell (powder bowl, maybe, I can't remember)

Patagonia R1 1/4 zip insulating layer

Nano-puff vest in the backpack or worn

Fleece neck gator depending on conditions

    Helmet

    Hester lobster claw gloves.

With highs below 20 I'll swap the R1 for a down sweater or my nano puff jacket.  Temps in the teens I'll use the R1 as a base layer under down sweater and will add a second bottom layer and add thin merino glove liners.

    Layering is key.

Don't count on snow in Tahoe end of December.  It's been uber dry as you have probably seen on the news.  Good news is that it has been both dry and cold and they are making snow on the lower parts of the hill.  Since you have never skied, that might be enough to put a smile on your face.  Doesn't look like you'll be sending it down KT-22 though.

Family decided to spend Christmas to new years in Tahoe this year, it'll be my first time skiing.

I've done a good deal of research about the area and where to go, but what I'm having trouble finding is a clear list of what I need to buy and what to just rent. Any help would be appreciated, my winter clothing doesn't go much further than a hoodie.

Rent skis, boots, poles, and helmet.

Purchase thin wool socks, wool or poly top and bottom base layers, reasonable ski pants (uninsulated or light insulation should be fine), poly fleece insulating layer, windproof shell (pit zips are nice to get rid of excess heat), reasonable goggles.

    No cotton.

Try an online gear exchange or eBay for pants, fleece/insulating layer, and shell.

  4. Interesting topic on the Freekanomics radio hour today addressing, among other things, the duopoly of the US political system.

In addition to getting rid of party-specific primaries (moving to a single-ballot and non-partisan primary system), I thought the Ranked Choice ballot/counting method was interesting.  Out of the top 4 candidates that move out of the primary, in the general voters rank each in order of preference.  If nobody receives at least 50%, then the last-place candidate is dropped and the voters that has selected that loser ( 🙂 ) has their votes moved to their second choice.  Repeat until someone gets to 50%.

May be too complicated for Broward County.

I have a rear wheel drive car with tons of torque and very low ground clearance. (~4 inches)

I need to get rid of that car pronto, but in the meantime I'm going to try to go up a few times on days where there is a 0% chance of precipitation.

You like your Outback? I've been eyeing the Mazda CX-5 & the Subaru Forester, the Honda CRV is just so ugly these days, but it's at the top of all of the rankings in that range.

I love it.  About the same ground clearance as a Grand Cherokee with a lower center of gravity.  Handles more like a sedan than suv.  A little less interior cargo volume than comparable suvs, but my roof box takes care of that.

I got the 3.6L 6 cylinder.  The 4 just seemed a little under powered for me.  I’ve got no issues going up the grade and passing fully loaded.  I considered the Forester with turbo, the style just didn’t click.

She’s a great mountain vehicle that is going to get a little more use this season with Telluride now on my season pass.

You need to keep a set of snow chains in your vehicle. During snow storms snow chains are required on vehicles,

Well. . . Sometimes they are.

CO in my experience is a little more lenient than CA. As long as you have M+S on your tires with good tread, you can travel during Passenger Traction Law events.  Takes a lot of snow on 70 to require passenger chains.  I’ve driven more times than I care to admit in crappy rental cars over Vail Pass in pretty marginal conditions.

Onboard is right though, chains are a good idea to have.  Decent tires good.  AWD on good tires better.  Chains good.  Any vehicle with winter tires even better.  My Outback on winter tires with AWD and a 3.6 liter 6 cylinder will be waiving at you as I pass: best 😉

Kind of interesting to have a somewhat meaningful game in Tempe in November.

I don’t think Wilkins is that bad.

Agreed, when he doesn’t try to do too much.  He’s really settled down the last few games.
