  1. So the above picture was unfortunately not a tournmaent. We just finished fishing Legends and came in 6th. Had a bad first day but found the fish the 2nd day and ended with 2 whites and 6 sails. Lost a blue, again, that would have put us in 2nd. Won the dorado pot with a 32.5 fish. We finally get a break and a weekend off and then it’s TWAT here in Port A to end the season. Then Bisbees in Cabo in October.

^^^JHI, was wondering if this may have been you.  687lb black marlin (as reported) from the TIFT tournament.  I didn’t even know blacks ran in the Gulf.

sorry for crappy pic (for ants).

No blacks in the gulf or Atlantic. Just blue and white marlin. Capt. Brian Phillips caught that fish on the new boat he is running called Smooth Move. They also caught a 206 pound yellowfin in the tournament. He’s a friend and also in the slip next to us so hopefully some of his luck will rub off. Headed out today to scout out a few spots for this weekend.

Haven’t posted much lately but I’m fishing the Texas tournaments this year on Rebecca. We just finished 5th in POCO with a 443 pond blue marlin. Good start to the season and now we have 4 tournaments to go over the next 5 weeks.

Lonestar Shootout  was the next tournament we went out trying to kill another big blue. Raised 3 and one of them was the right one, huge fish that ate a 20 pound black fin bait. . Jumped him off. Easy 600 pound plus fish.

left POC  Monday to go prefish for the TIFT tournament started fishing about 11 in the morning and ended up with 3 white marlin and 13 sailfish. Spent the night out there and caught 2 whites, 2 sails and a blue the next day. We are pretty sure that is the unofficial record for most billfish released in Texas over 2 days. Headed in to south padre and rested. Fished the tournament over the weekend and the bite had slowed we caught 3 whites 7 sails and finished in 4th. Missed a bunch of fish including a blue that would have won the whole thing for us.

Next up is Legends this weekend here in Port A.

  4. Best restaurant in town is liberty hall/inferno. Corner of allister and cotter. Venetian hot plate is also excellent but you’ll need a reservation. La Barataria and Lisabella’s are good too. For more casual cheaper food I like shells and kody’s. Also harbor lights which is at the back porch bar. They have live music on weekends but I think the kitchen closes at 6.

depends on your age but the most popular bar in town is Bernie’s. They have a great happy hour from open until 7. Dollar draft beer and 2 dollar wells. About 10 pm it turns into a dance club with mostly 20s and 30 year olds. Shortys is a good place for a beer outside and so is the back porch.

  5. Mosquitoes are out of control. I grilled steaks the other night and not only did they go after me but they also were attacking the grille. Never seen anything like it. Other than that the beach is in poor shape from last weeks rains but it’s getting better every day. And hopefully we will be back to normal by next summer. There will still be some condos not open but pretty much everything else should be good to go. No more hurricanes please.

As the five of us finally started  to drive off the golf course after the 2006 Rose Bowl a guy passed us on foot selling T-shirts for $5.  They were "USC 3-Peat" shirts printed up in anticipation of a Trojan victory.  Mrs. Idahorn occasionally wears hers to game watching parties up here in Boise.

As we were leaving the game we found a guy selling those same shirts. We gave him 20 dollars for the whole box and then took them to the team hotel where we were staying. The players loved them and kept a bunch and then autographed the ones we had left for our group. Best night ever.

  7. I’m in the same “boat”. PortAfino is now on the market. My fishing partner bought a 60 foot custom Carolina and that will be my ride going forward. For those of you familiar Brennan is still our captain and I gave my friend all my tackle, so it’s basically the same as it was now we are just bigger and faster. We’ve had it since September and the extra bedroom has made it much more comfortable on overnights. Also won the Quepos Rockstar tourney on it in January and those winnings are going to go across the board at the Bisbees tournament in Cabo this October. GamePlan will get shipped from Costa Rica to Cabo in September. I’ll get some pictures up soon.

  8. Yes the prices at all the rentals and hotels are higher. With all the new contractors and workers in town taking up rooms it can be hard to find a decent deal. We really need the condos to get back open. Next summer should be better.

  9. February and March are the two best months for sailfish. The last two years have been slow, instead of getting 40 or more bites a day it’s been more like 5 to 10. If you want to do a serious marlin trip go June July or August on an overnight trip to the FADs

The sail fishing is due to pick up soon. It’s been a bad combination of the wrong currents and very little bait.

  10. Quepos/Manuel Antonio has some great beaches but September is iffy weather wise. You might be better off heading further north in the country that time of year. I haven’t been up there but have heard good things and I know some people on this board have gone there.

  11. I was down about a week ago for 5 days. Weather was terrible for 2 days, ok 1 day, and then great the last 2 days. Went with my friend and his daughter and since we had her did not do overnight trips out 100ish miles to the FADs like we usually do this time of year.

BUT There is a new FAD 60 miles off of Quepos that some of the charter boats will go to if you ask them to. You’ll have to pay a little extra. We fished it 2 times this trip. The first day was awful we raised 4 blue marlin and only got 1 bite. The next day was a different story raised 15 blues had 10 bites caught 6. Then went and chased tuna caught two 50 pounders and left them biting. Left the dock at 5 am and back by 5 pm.

I know for sure Frenzy will do that trip as a charter. A few others will too. Talking to others down there it’s been on again off again at that FAD, but if you are looking for blues it’s worth a shot IMO.

  12. Yes it’s open. Pretty much all the restaurants and bars are good to go now with the exception of Castaways. But it sucks so who cares. They did hire a real chef and are revamping the menu, so there’s hope.
