My mom and my husband share a birthday, both really love fishing, and have never done a chartered trip (due to general frugality). I'd love to surprise them with a double date trip, but I don't know if either would enjoy it knowing it cost thousands. Are the little bay trips worth doing for $600? We could go anywhere, Port A to SPI.

He sent me to a guy in port A that was great for that.  But he ran his business through Facebook and I don’t use that anymore so no idea how to find him.

That would be Josh Garcia. Bay guide. Book him for sure if he’s available and if not he can give you some other suggestions. He’s a Longhorn, funny guy, and one of the best fisherman around.

A good private charter for offshore is going to run you upwards of 3500, otherwise you can always book a headboat out of Deep Sea Headquarters or Dolphin Docks but you will have 40+ other people with you.

Do all y’all spend the nights on the Port Afino, or is there a larger boat that goes with you for supplies?  Does your anchor hit bottom at night that far out when you sleep or does someone stay awake and keep the boat on course?  Thanks for answers to random questions.

We hold over 1500 gallons of diesel and have a water maker that can make about 80 gallons of water an hour so the boat is self sufficient. Depending on what we are doing we can stay offshore for a week or more on our own if we want to but most of our overnight trips are 2-4 nights.  When we do overnight trips we spend the night on the boat and either drift or slowly chug to a new spot. it’s too deep to anchor. Either way there is always someone awake on the bridge watching the radar and other electronics/equipment. All that said the vast majority of the time we do day trips leaving at dawn and back to the dock before dark.

If you don't mind me asking, how far out roughly these days? I do not have a boat down there but I spend time between Pavones and Jaco

We are currently about 70 miles offshore of Pavones and 140 from Jaco. In the winter we are fishing much closer in - between 15-50 miles.

First stop this morning was a bust so we are moving about 15 miles right now.

I am pretty jealous of you and your life.  Not going to lie.

It doesn’t suck being able to do this in one of the top fishing marinas in the world.

fuck @justhookit I give in, you can have our dog, can I has marlin catch on drone footage for me please?

We’ve been fishing for 2 hours now 4 blue marlin bites and released 3 and my wife and I caught a double header. Dealing with weather issues (rain) so not sure how much longer we can stay here. No drone shots yet can’t fly in the rain.

there has to be a good taqueria in portland

Ah I forgot about that. Taqueria El Tapatio used to be great especially their breakfast tacos. It’s the only good food I ever found in Portland but I haven’t been in years.

La Playa is very good. I just wish they had good basic Tex Mex to go with their fajitas and seafood.

You have a point about my opinion being 5 years old, but like you, I'll stick with it and keep enjoying great food when I'm in town.  If it is so terrible, then why the fuck are you eating it twice a month?

That was my post that started all this.

You can’t compare Tex Mex from SA to anywhere. It’s just not fair to those places outside of SA. And Austin Tex Mex is dog shit.

Good. La Playa’s Tex Mex fits right in.

I do get what you are saying. La Playa to me is sort of the equivalent of Matt’s El Rancho. I really like Matt’s, but I don’t ever order their Tex Mex. And I’d rather have cheese enchilada from Taco Cabana than what they serve at La Playa.

I generally opt for seafood inspired dishes when I eat at La Playa, but I've had their cheese enchiladas, and like every other dish I have had there, there is nothing inedible about them, granted I have not been since pre-COVID.  I have not had their crispy tacos, but they are on the menu, and suspect they are edible as well.

So you haven’t been in 5 years, and I live in Port A and probably go twice a month when I am in town. I’ll stick with my opinion which is what it is. Compared to what I am used to in San Antonio and Austin that kind of stuff at La Playa is terrible.

I could eat the Tres Mariscos Enchiladas every damn night at LaPlaya.  Never miss a visit there when we get down to Port A.

Maybe it’s just the ones I’m looking at. I’d prefer 4 bedrooms and they all look like Saturday check-ins

I didn’t realize they did that on the villas. Good to know.

    What about Spaghetti Works?
it was not horrible but I have only been to the new location once and that several years ago.

    It was decent.

Like you say it’s not horrible. Sort of like every other restaurant in this town except Venetian. It’s either fried tourist food or “high end” that is way overpriced for the quality like Roosevelt’s, Phoenix, Black Marlin, Lisabella’s.

Because all the growth is not from people who actually live on the island?

We’ve lost our 3 best restaurants (Pelican Club/Liberty Hall/Inferno, Shells, and Marcel’s). All 3 had owners who retired and nobody new has come in with anything good. There is no variety. I’d kill for a good Mexican restaurant.
