We are here this weekend and our rental has Spectrum so won’t have the game. Any ideas on a decent spot for dinner that will have the game?

    Stingrays should have it.

I’m not a fan but yeah it’s a sports bar with food. Personally I’d eat before and then watch the game wherever, Bernie’s actually has pretty decent food and good TV’s.

I’d invite you over but I’m watching the game at a friends house.

Dad just said that the name will be the "Beach Bum".

    Original, I know.

I told him to tell them that they need to have GOOD food there.  Maybe that will differentiate it AND give y'all something decent to eat.

Any idea where it’s going to be? Good Food would be a major plus otherwise it’s going to be really tough to make it here. 4 or 5 bars have opened on the last year or 2 and 2 have already gone out of business.

Took my GF 45 min to drive from our house here on NPI to the Bluff (she teaches/coaches at FB HS).

I think I'll stay working from home, thank you.

I did see on the Facebook that at least one person has lost a NICE palm tree.  That sucks.  Those are EXPENSIVE to replace.

Apparently the wind was whipping the rain around bad enough that my Nest doorbell camera told me there was a person at my front door (it's pretty recessed from the wind).  It didn't even do that during Hanna...

Yeah this storm is way stronger than what I was expecting. Very strong wind gusts here in Port A and currently 5 tornado warnings inland north and northwest of us.

Interdasting...just talked with my Dad (he lives at Medina Lake) and some folks he knows there are going to be opening a new bar in Port A in February...

If he finds out more, I'll post it here.

Great. That’s exactly what we fucking need here.

  5. I don’t think some of y’all understand how the Port A economy works. Nobody can afford to open a restaurant on the water for fine dining anymore and even if they could you can’t staff it with quality people. Thus, you end up with places like Virginia’s, Grumbles, and FINS (which is way underrated by the way). You would not believe the sales numbers of those places.

Also it did have the best seafood restaurant on the water for years - Pelican Club. Sadly, dining options here in town aren’t what they were 10 years ago with the loss of that restaurant and Marcel’s.

For fine dining, Venetian Hot Plate is in a class by itself here. Lisabella’s is probably second but way overpriced. Same problem with Phoenix. Roosevelt’s is hit and miss. I really enjoy the dining at Black Marlin but it’s a little more casual than those places. Their new building will be interesting to see what they do with.

edit- when the new marina gets built at Charlie’s pasture we hopefully will see a wharf style shop/restaurant venue out there.

Any guide recs out of PJ? Going there after Thanksgiving. Just want some eating fish so not sure what might be best option. Offshore or inshore for grouper/snapper.

This is the best outfit down there. The head guy Bobby McGuinness is kind of a prick, but he can fish. He runs their big boats though and it sounds like you’d be fine with their smaller boats.

I've been on a trip out West and didn't see this in time. I hope you had a fantastic time in PR. If you're ever in that area again, it's worth staying at least two or three more days to see Vieques and Culebra.

Ended up postponing the trip until the 2nd week of August. If things work out there I’ll be spending quite a bit of time in August and September there.

  8. In CR now taking stuff off the boat looks like it will finally sell. This is first choice for the upgrade. Sticking with a Viking. Talked myself out of a custom even though it’s always been a dream.

    Wait...The FLATS is "looking good"?

Well, end of the world is nigh.

I mean, it’s still dark but they’ve really fixed it up. I might even call it nice.

Had to run to Port A last week to take care of some stuff so I ran by where Shorty's used to be.  Damn that's creepy with it gone...

And the new one still isn’t open dammit. I heard the other day it will be soon though.

That empty lot where Shorty’s was should soon be an outdoor area for the people that bought the Flats building. The new bar is looking good on the inside.

My wife booked us at Flamingo Beach in a nice condo at a resort, 100 feet from the beach. It had good reviews and was only 45 minutes from Liberia, so it won out for her. I had her read a bit of this thread and her concern when researching Tulemar was the drive for the kids. They travel a ton, but that's about 10 hours door to door for a 4 night stay, returning the night before school starts. Y'all rec it strong enough that we're considering a longer trip to there in the future, with or without the midgets in tow.

Playa Conchal is considered the best beach in CR and it is right next to Flamingo. It’s worth a visit. Other than that I’ve only spent a day in Flamingo. Coco Loco on the beach is really good and I am sure there’s some good stuff in the new marina there. A few friends of mine just spent 10 days there fishing and hanging out if you need some more recs.

Tulemar is really nice and recommended so highly here for a reason, but there are a ton of other really nice options too. And you can always fly Sansa from SJO to Manuel Antonio. Fifteen minute flight that works great if you can time your arrival early enough in the day.

Sorry for not keeping up with this thread, but we’re pondering going somewhere new in Costa Rica just before the school year starts. My wife is saying “Los Suenos” looks fun. I normally take my boys offshore for half a day, so nothing serious like what some of you guys do, but we’ve caught tuna and wahoo and barracuda many times in CR, Grand Cayman and The Bahamas, so it’s fun. Anyway, outside of that we just do the beach and golf and so forth for a few days.

Any experiences in that area or thoughts? Wondering if it is a good option not too far from an airport.

Los Suenos is fine. Get a condo or house on the property instead of staying at the Marriott. Your wife and kids will love the pool at the hotel. The golf course is really pretty but not always in the best of shape due to all the rain. The “beach” there is not as nice as elsewhere.

My guess is that the “basketball benefactors” make NBA funny money and are former players who passed through Austin since The Year 2000.

Baseball doesn’t have as many former players making double-digit millions per year. Also, the roster is much bigger.

Doubt he’s talking about the players. Basketball has been well supported for many years by some very wealthy boosters.

Is there any place besides Tortuga that takes reservations?  Also, when does Shortys open?

Venetian, Phoenix, Roosevelt’s, Lisabella’s, and maybe Black Marlin.

Nobody seems to know Shorty’s timeline but from driving by I’d guess sometime this month. So only like 3 months behind schedule.

On our way down today. I’m not happy about it. Meeting some of the wife’s family and I don’t like any of them. We usually go down in September or October. I’m already pissed about the crowds and I haven’t even left the house yet.

We will be alone tonight. So I need a good recommendation for dinner. Probably the only good time I’ll have for the next couple of days.

It’s been 3 years since we’ve been down. Where are the good places to eat now? We always enjoyed Shells but they are gone. Is the Venetian hot plate still there? Is Roosevelt still good?

To me Venetian is the best restaurant here by far, but there is no way you’ll be able to get in tonight. Heck these days it’s fully booked even during the week. Roosevelt’s is hit and miss lately. They might have an opening though at the new bar attached to it called 1886. They serve a limited menu from the Roosevelt’s kitchen.

Basically though on weekends now you are fucked for dining out without a reservation. Wherever you go, go early - like 4:45. Good luck.

    Tortugas

This is a good idea as it’s one of the few places you can make a reservation. If it’s for tonight though he’s probably SOL, they are likely full. Pretty much all the restaurants are running at least a 2 hour wait for larger parties on the weekends.

Are they going to convert Jay's or continue the seafood and spaghetti?

The new owners took over months back. Same name and I think same menu although I never go there so not sure.

    big house burgers ?

It’s a shallow labor pool around there for sure

Passed by the location today on the way back from the beach. It’s called Bier Haus. Looks like they have one other location in Lubbock. And I had forgotten, but they also bought Spaghetti Works awhile back.

Seems like the biggest problem for Port A is getting warm bodies to work.

justhookit - I have two questions for you.  First off have there been adverse effects in the Marina from the addition of the super large ships now able to come into Corpus?  I know the Marina area next to Cline's landing is basically devoid of boats, where in the past they were nearly full or full.  The larger ships put larger wakes into the marina area there (and I assume at Baytree) and I saw some video of waves making an out and back in the marina with a nearly 3 foot wave, slapping the bottoms of the decking between the berths.  I also noticed that there were not as many smaller boats moored in the city marina near Roberts point as I remembered.  Just wondering if it's just Cline's landing or up and down the ship channel.

Second Question - How much will the development of Lake Padre in Corpus impact Port A?  If at all?  Wasn't sure if they were going to have a lot of larger full time moorings or if it was going to be more smaller berths.  Seems like it will cause North Padre to take on more of a Port A vibe with perhaps more of a fishing focus?

Not sure the wakes have much to do with it if you are talking about the handful of slips between Clines and Baytree. My guess is a lot of those boats didn’t come back after Harvey or moved to city marina. Island Moorings is only 20% full too - their problem is pricing and nobody trusts that the channel to get to the ship channel will stay dredged.

As for the 2nd question Port A is developing so fast I don’t think any development on N Padre will impact Port A at all.
