My family and another are heading down to Port A this weekend for SB.  We have 7 kids between the 2 families, the oldest being 11 and the youngest 3.  We have a VRBO a few minutes from the beach.  We're only down there for 3 days/3 nights, so not a ton of time to hit everything, but this is what I have planned and I want you all to tell me why this itinerary is a bad idea and how I can improve it.

    Day 1

    4pm-Arrive at house

    4:01-Start drinking heavily

Dinner-Seafood place capable of handling 11 (need suggestions here)

    Day 2

    Breakfast-cook at house

    Late morning/early afternoon-Beach

    Dinner-La Playa

    6pm-Sunset dolphin boat ride

    Day 3

    Breakfast-???

    Morning-Texas State Aquarium

Lunch-??? (Somewhere in CC.  I always dug the vibe of the Whataburger on the water south of downtown)

    Afternoon-Lexington

    Dinner-Grill at house

    Day 4

Drive home, hit Shiner Brewery tour on the way out

If you have everything listed in the proper order, there is no way you will be able to do dinner at La Playa (it doesn’t open until 5) and then make a 6 p.m. dolphin watch tour. Also, in general the restaurants are going to be clusterfucks. Go as early as you can to them.

Kody’s is another place that can handle 11. So can Crazy Cajun, but it sucks.

I haven't really followed it but did hear something last week about them building a gigantic prison and throwing something like 60,000 people in there, which just sounds insane, both that they felt they needed to do that and simply the sheer number of people confined in one place. If you've got more info, I'd be interested in hearing it.

Yep, most with life without parole. They are placing them into 100 person cells about 2 hours from the Capitol. There are some videos out there of the first batch being taken in.

The issue is how do you deal with the little cartel/mara members. Lock them up for life?

I expect a prison riot and lots of dead within a year. The Maras do not like each other and this will be another of the President's shit shows (See bitcoin Beach).

Yup. This will not end well.

Looking for a recommendation for a good place to stay for a week this summer with the GF, my teenage daughter, and the GF’s teenage daughter. (No pics, cocksuckers).

I went one time about 10 years ago and stayed at the JW up by Tamarindo.

    Open to whatever this time.

    Thanks in advance.

Lots of good info on this thread.

I like the central and southern coast better - Manuel Antonio, Dominical, Uvita but the weather is a little more iffy in the summer. Tamarindo obviously has a lot to do for the teenagers and if you like that area Flamingo is nearby and has a new marina so it’s growing. It’s also very close to Playa Conchal which is one of the nicest beaches in all of CR. South of Tamarindo are some cool smaller beach towns - Samara and Nosara in particular.

  4. Fishing has stayed extremely slow for this time of year in Costa Rica. Still way more marlin around than usual but the sailfish just aren’t here in numbers like they should be. Yesterday we found a ton of yellowfin tuna everywhere we went so got some for dinner, then caught this nice blue marlin and a few sails. We are fishing a one day tournament on Saturday so hopefully the fishing picks up.

  5. So I’m getting pretty spoiled this trip to Costa Rica. So far I’ve fished multiple days on a 65’ American Custom Yacht. And one day each on a 65’ Rybovich, 50’ Blackwell, 60’ Jim Smith, 64’ Viking, 64’ Duffie, 72’ Merritt, 51’ Scarborough, and a 68’ Viking. They’ve all been amazing fishing machines but the Rybovich and Merritt really stood out. I wish I had taken more pictures but here’s a few I took and some I grabbed off the internet.

Quick help from the more experienced anglers.  headed down to central america.  Pacific.  will spend a day inshore fishing with a guide.  other days will be spent just chilling around the resort which is right on the water.  they have a dock so i thought Id take a travel set up and just grab a beer and throw some line out.  not sure ill have access to any bait so my thought was to take a few hooks and lures.   Guide says grey snapper aka mangrove should be around.  So what should I do?  Popper?  use a spec rig?  internet says #2 hook.   any thoughts on a few lures to take?   Also might take my set up to the beach or any place else anyone recommends while down there.

Where are you going?  A few simple silver spoons and a few chrome rattle traps in different sizes should work pretty much anywhere.

  7. I don’t know why the news articles that mention a second balloon over “Latin America” aren’t being more specific. The damn thing was over my marina Marina Pez Vela in Costa Rica on Thursday morning. I got this picture of it. If they needed to find it they could have just asked me. Clearly the Chinese are trying to steal my fishing secrets. The next 2 days there was a ton of U.S. military helicopter traffic over the Pacific which you don’t see often at all other than an occasional large drug interdiction.

  8. Super busy here I’ve been in Costa Rica 3 weeks now and have already fished 10 days, including a few tournaments. The bite was great for the first 2 weeks - 3 to 5 shots a day at marlin and 15-20 sailfish each trip but it’s slowed some the last week. Also had the most devastating end to a tournament ever in the Quepos Pelagic Rockstar. A boat beat us with 2 minutes left in the tournament and dropped our check from 250,000 to 13,000. Just brutal.

Marlin bite. If this video doesn’t post right let me know and I’ll put it on YouTube

@justhookit ....will be in Los Suenos in 3 weeks fishing with the Maverick folks....you got any can't-miss dinner recs outside of the marina/resort, and more in town?

All in Jaco - Lemon Zest, Ohana Sushi, Calichi’s Wishbone, Green Room. I’m not big on most sushi but people whose opinion I trust have said Ohana is about the best they have had anywhere in the world. Jaco Bar is also a cool little bar that has really good bar food and more.  As you know the food everywhere at the marina is outstanding too.

I don’t believe it has opened.

It hasn’t even moved yet. I’m out of town but last I heard it might move Sunday or Monday. I wouldn’t expect it to open before at least spring break and my guess is that it won’t open until Memorial Day.

  11. Every time I get back down here I like it even more. I got here a little over a week ago and I’ve been going nonstop ever since - mostly fishing. I’m headed a bit up the coast today to Los Suenos for another week of fishing and then after that hoping to slow down , relax, and enjoy this country.

Wearher has been great and I did take the Highway from San Jose to Manuel Antonio. No problems at all other than a quick detour.

Going for round 2 in a few weeks.  Still staying in the Domain, although not at the Archer (Archer was full, doing Lone Star Court this time).   Doing dinner for 4 nights.  We are going to Andiamo and Uchiko for sure on Wed and Thurs.  Need 2 more.  One needs to be a steakhouse (not Eddie V's) and one needs to be an American style place.  Willing to venture farther out from the Domain than I was last time, but probably don't want to go farther than 20ish minutes each way unless there is a damn good reason for doing so.  This will be on a Friday and Saturday night.  Doing Uchiko and Andiamo the first 2 nights.

Thinking of the following for both of those nights.  Need one steakhouse and one American style place.  Don't want 2 steakhouses because I don't like steakhouses.

    • Barley Swine
    • Salt & Time
    • J Carvers

    Any other recs?

J Carvers for sure. I’ve been going there most trips to Austin this year and had 2 day old leftovers from there earlier this week and it was better than the meal I had at III Forks Tuesday night. I’ve never been to Salt and Time but had a ham from there on Christmas Day that was outstanding. My favorite restaurant in Austin is still Red Ash (which is how I first learned of J Carver) but sounds like it’s not an option for you this trip.

It’s a little surprising to me that they were having relationship issues in the days leading up to their brawl.  I guess you never know.

Well, in this case where it’s mostly he said/she said and trying to get a a story out, I was verifying the rumor that there was an incident in NYC, and there was also one in public the night before the arrest. I’m not comfortable putting the details out there. But the fact that there are at least 2 verifiable incidents of her behavior right before the arrest makes it much more likely, to me, that Beard was truly defending himself. And then left the house which is also verified. this isn’t a case of Beard or his legal team paying her off to change a story. I thought it was interesting that the rumor about NYC which I heard early on was true and I hadn’t heard anything about the night before. Anyway I’ll go ahead and let y’all continue talking about Westlake.

    Merry Christmas assholes!

Quasi-Christmas gift + 20 year anniversary + kids have never traveled outside the states + scheduling around school and sports = August in Costa Rica.

Staying for a week at the JW Marriott south of Tamarindo (cashed in a shit ton of points).

Looking for some fun excursions.  Would prefer private tours / guides as opposed to the congregating with the masses.  We'd love to fish while we're down there once or twice as well.  Any input from @justhookit on potential offshore charters and anyone else on jungle excursions, etc?  We're not much for sitting around, so any info on adventures around that area would be much appreciated.

If you’ll remind me about the fishing part in a few weeks I will see if I can be any help. Unfortunately I just don’t know that many people fishing  up north and the few that I used to know seem to be staying where I am year-round now. One boat may be up that way and I’ll ask about them otherwise I’ll see if I can get a rec from any of the locals in my area.

The JW should be able to set you up with any and all private tours. My one and only trip to Tamarindo was with people that live in CR full time so none of us were doing the tours. We parked ourselves on the beach and relaxed. I think you will be at or very near Playa Conchal which is a great beach. Playa Flamingo about 30 minutes north of Tamarindo has a marina, a Margaritaville (avoid), and a cool little beach with a fun restaurant/bar right on the water called Coco Loco. That’s all I’ve got.

Attached is our view from literally 50 feet outside our hotel on the beach in Tamarindo, Coco Loco in Flamingo, and a street market that I think is Saturday nights in Tamarindo. Fun stuff and good food.

  15. Merry Christmas everyone. It’s that time of year again. Who else will be down there this winter? I head down in just under 2 weeks and planning to stay for the full allowed 90 days. So far I’ve got 7 tournaments lined up to fish as an observer  - yes they actually will pay me a small amount to go ride on nice boats and observe a bunch of fish being caught. Will fish some on my own and try to defend our Sailfish Slam tournament win from last year. Golf. Imperials. Warm weather.
it seems like I’ve got more friends/family coming down this year than any other year I’ve been down there and if that’s any indication it’s going to be busy there.

I can’t wait to get to Quepos/Manuel Antonio. Pura Vida.
