Are they going to convert Jay's or continue the seafood and spaghetti?

    Facebook

The new owners took over months back. Same name and I think same menu although I never go there so not sure.

    big house burgers ?

It’s a shallow labor pool around there for sure

Passed by the location today on the way back from the beach. It’s called Bier Haus. Looks like they have one other location in Lubbock. And I had forgotten, but they also bought Spaghetti Works awhile back.

Seems like the biggest problem for Port A is getting warm bodies to work.

justhookit - I have two questions for you.  First off have there been adverse effects in the Marina from the addition of the super large ships now able to come into Corpus?  I know the Marina area next to Cline's landing is basically devoid of boats, where in the past they were nearly full or full.  The larger ships put larger wakes into the marina area there (and I assume at Baytree) and I saw some video of waves making an out and back in the marina with a nearly 3 foot wave, slapping the bottoms of the decking between the berths.  I also noticed that there were not as many smaller boats moored in the city marina near Roberts point as I remembered.  Just wondering if it's just Cline's landing or up and down the ship channel.

Second Question - How much will the development of Lake Padre in Corpus impact Port A?  If at all?  Wasn't sure if they were going to have a lot of larger full time moorings or if it was going to be more smaller berths.  Seems like it will cause North Padre to take on more of a Port A vibe with perhaps more of a fishing focus?

Not sure the wakes have much to do with it if you are talking about the handful of slips between Clines and Baytree. My guess is a lot of those boats didn’t come back after Harvey or moved to city marina. Island Moorings is only 20% full too - their problem is pricing and nobody trusts that the channel to get to the ship channel will stay dredged.

As for the 2nd question Port A is developing so fast I don’t think any development on N Padre will impact Port A at all.

    Hey, @justhookit,

Was Shell's bought by the same guy who owns the Holiday Inn Express property and the old Rock Cottages and Laughing Horse properties?  Or is someone going to put a new restaurant there?

Gonna be a lot of units up at Eleventh and G.

Did the guy from Shell's retire?

Yeah the owner of Shell’s is retired. She said it had been coming for awhile and it sucks because we desperately need more good restaurants.

The new owner is putting in a burgers and beer type place there. I think they have other locations in Texas. It’s not at all what we need.

    What a glorious beast.

Questions for @justhookit and others who've chased billfish for decades: hHw are their populations holding up? Are their ranges as broad as they once were? Are larger specimens harder to find? Or has conservation been effective in maintaining an equilibrium or even resulting in greater numbers?

Hard to say. The fishing is as good or better than its ever been, but part of that is the increased efficiency and technology of boats and tackle and techniques. To really understand billfish populations we would need accurate commercial fishing data which we never had in the past and still don’t have.

The conservation issue means that almost all recreationally caught billfish are released. The problem has been and always will be on the commercial side.

I don't see many "big" boats down here.  Even the guy that owns the place where I'm staying keeps his big boat up in Miami at the Yacht Club.  The water around here is too shallow for his taste.   The boat that he keeps here at the  house is a "Scout", I'd guess 30' or so, with 3 600 horse mercs.   It's covered, but I'll take a couple of pics anyway and post them shortly.

Lol there is no way they put 1800 horsepower on the back of a 30 foot boat. Scout makes some models in the mid 40’s and maybe even a 50 footer. It’s still fucking stupid. Cool boat though.

My son and I caught some this past summer.
Biggest one was about 35 lbsIMG_0629.jpg

Those are blackfin tuna you caught. The giant tuna are bluefin - they average 600 pounds or more and are only caught when they spawn here in the gulf late March through mid May. They are 100+ miles out and take very heavy tackle if you want any chance of getting them to the boat. The gulf wide quota is roughly 10 fish per year.

Anyone ever been all the way down to the border with Panama in CR?   Hilton has a pretty sweet looking property in Puerto Jimenez and I am racking up a shit ton of Hilton points I could use.  Looks like a drive I don't really want to do.  I can fly Sansa down from SJO.   Is it worth is to go that far down?  I was just in Boca Chica Panama and I do like that it feels really off the beaten path.

There is pretty much nothing in Puerto Jimenez itself but it has access to good fishing out of there or Golfito. Also some world class surfing nearby. The draw down there is Corcovado National Park which is absolutely amazing.

Ive spent a ton of time in Golfito but I’ve only flown through Puerto Jimenez. The flight from SJO stops there before flying across the Golfo Dulce on the way to Golfito. It’s a 3 minute flight.

this is a random question but at what point does it really pick up in Port A people wise for the summer?

Memorial Day. Then it gets really bad right before July 4th and stays very crowded through mid August or whenever school starts back up.

Are bluefin here just a random once in a blue moon thing or can you actually go fishing for them here?

You can target them in April and May. They are here spawning. But the quota is only 6 or so fish per year so unless you catch one of the first ones you have to let them go. They are fishing for them 100+ miles out.

how long did it take to to pull in that monster? holy cow 876 lbs

They fought it for 8 hours or so. Normally wouldn’t take nearly that long because they are targeting bluefin on really heavy tackle, but that one died on the line deep down. When that happens it’s a bitch to get them in.

  12. Those are 2 different fish. First picture was 2 years ago caught by friends of mine and is the state record. Second and third pictures are from a fish caught last week on a party boat out of dolphin docks. While still a massive tuna it was 200 pounds less than the state record.

  13. I’ve fished a ton this trip. Headed out again in the morning and fishing 2 days then a few days off and then a few more days of fishing before I head home. Can’t believe I’ve already been down here almost 3 months.

Headed south mañana for wife's annual corporate retreat, staying at the JW Guanacaste. Really want to do some offshore fishing on Friday, but we'll see what excursions they offer. Probably spend most of the weekend just getting drunk at the resort, but hopefully we can pop over to Tamarindo for a bit. Also praying I can watch Xavier-UT without too much trouble...

I’ve been using Sling down here for games but you need to run a VPN with it. YouTubeTV doesn’t seem to work at all even with the VPN. The tournament app MM Live works but I can’t remember if I had the VPN on for it or not.

Anyway I’d guess the JW will have the game. Have a good trip.

Port A visitors and residents woke up Saturday to an unpleasant surprise.  Problems at the source put the entire city without natural gas. Thus, no gas central heat, hot showers or cooking except where an electric alternative existed.  Most restaurants were closed.  Taqueria San Juan's parking lot was empty when we left around noon yesterday.

The supply has been restored, but all the meters have to be shut off before the lines can be pressured back up.  They are projecting a return to normal by this afternoon.

The city manager might be lucky he's not in Austin.  If so, he might lose his job.

Home - City of Port Aransas

They still don’t have it restored. Clusterfuck of epic proportions which spring break is anyway. So glad I’m not at home.

OK we'll probably have to nix La Playa or move it to another day.

Best bars for me and my buddy to sneak away to once the kids are in bed?

Salty Dog. Gaff for beer and pizza. Bernie’s for the younger spring break crowd.

My usual answer would be Shorty’s but it’s still closed for their move and remodel.
