What? He was already in the portal. Why would Texas care?

Never mind. I’m an idoit. Still don’t see why Texas cares. No impact on our two NSD2 prospects.

edit- like I thought he was in the portal. Fuck this I’m going to the beach

  3. Not sure if I’ve mentioned it here or on our old shaggy thread, but Uber is working here in Quepos/Manuel Antonio now, especially during the day. I’m probably at about a 75% successs rate requesting a ride. It’s been anywhere from 1/2 to 1/3 the price of cabs. I took one from Quepos to Jaco for 38 dollars.

I know July is basically peak rainy season down there but I am really interested in CR for a getaway around the 4th. Have you or anyone else on here ever been in July before? Is the rain a big issue or is it just typical afternoon shower type thing?

They typically have a short dry season for a few weeks during July (central and southern Pacific coasts). It lasts probably 2-4 weeks and is not a guarantee. If you are going to those areas that time of year it’s the best time to go. Or you can go north from Papagayo on down to Tamarindo which should be less rainy.

Ive been here in Quepos during the rainy season many, many times and never had a problem but that time of year I’m almost always out fishing so don’t really care if it rains. And I don’t spend a lot of time on land. The surrounding areas are rainforests for a reason. It can rain a lot, enough to wash out the roads at times. This area averages about 150 inches per year with almost all of it falling mid May to the end of November. I’ve been down a little over a month this trip and have not seen a single drop of rain.  I’m just lucky? and have not been here when that happens.

Im sorry? Are you a Warehime fan all the sudden?

Going purely off that post for information you could ask the question. Or at least get a little wishful thinking going.

Fuck it, you’re rolling. So who is your guess for the other coaching vacancy, since “going purely off that post for information” there are 2?

  6. Yeah like I said I’m a little torn. The marina desperately needs a hotel though and for fishing people like me the direct flights are a godsend. It’s going to be so much easier to get parts and equipment down from the states. There won’t be enough flight capacity to change much in the town itself. I’ll panic the minute I see a Hard Rock Cafe.

  7. Brazilian. Or at least the group is a Brazilian investor group. That part was a little unclear.

between that and finally breaking ground on the marina hotel by the end of the year, things are going to change a lot here. It should be mostly for the good, but a part of me doesn’t want to see the Quepos marina get more crowded.

  8. Direct flights from the U.S. to Quepos/Manuel Antonio? Hell yes.

Just found out last night that an airline signed a contract that will start as soon as the runway is lengthened. It sounds like it’s from about 5 cities and Houston and Austin are on the list.

I flew Nature Air in 2015 from San Jose to Quepos and back.  It was certainly an experience.  I knew they crashed recently where there were fatalities, but it happened again?  Makes me feel lucky.

Yes, 2 crashes in less than 6 months in 2017. One killed everyone and the other had 2 or 3 fatalities. It sounds like the company is basically bankrupt and had over half their fleet repossessed/crashed.

If they do manage to resume flying, no way I would get on their planes.

  10. As long as there are drugs moving north there will always be shipments passing through here. And it’s been happening on both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts as long as I’ve been coming here (15 years) and who knows how long before that. Puerto Viejo and Limon are considered a little more dangerous than the Pacific but as long as you don’t go looking for trouble there aren’t problems, just like pretty much anywhere else in the world. In fact if I had to guess more drugs come up the Pacific side.

Down in Golfito where I used to fish a lot the old joke was did anyone catch a “square grouper”. Planes would drop the drugs and the boats would go pick them up. You did NOT want to pick up the packages if you weren’t the intended recipient. At least one of the local commercial fisherman that I know of tried selling what he found. Bought a new car, etc. It did not end well for him.

Looks like I am traveling with the wife and kids (11,12) to Los Sueños in July.  It’s been 15 years since my last trip to CR.

    Marriott or condo/house?

my only can’t miss up there is Wishbones in Jaco for tuna. Sashimi or spicy tuna bowl you can’t go wrong.

  12. Also you can look into the puddle jumpers. Sansa Airline I am pretty sure doesn’t do Arenal/LaFortuna - San Jose - Quepos/Manuel Antonio anymore. Nature Air did until they crashed twice recently. They are currently banned from flying but I am hearing they are back in the air soon. YMMV

    Or just go rafting again.

seriously though I’ve flown Sansa a bunch and have no hesitation getting on their planes. I’ve had multiple nature air flights too but that’s been 7 or 8 years ago

  13. Midtown I’d completely avoid San Jose. There’s no reason to day trip to Arenal so just spend the night and go from there to the coast. I can’t remember if you used our driver last trip but he, or any of them, will take you anywhere anytime day or night.

I don’t buy this. I believe that people are circulating this, but it sounds like fresh bullshit. This season is headed towards another dumpster fire and that’s a problem with the new arena efforts well under way.

Yes. That story is utter horseshit. I don’t believe it for a second, I’ve never heard anything like it, and even if it was true there is no way CDC makes a decision based on that.

  15. Anyway, in regards to the topic of the OP I meet a lot of expats in Costa Rica. They are by and large old, drunk, and pro Reagan/Bush/Trump. And lonely. At least on the coast. I haven’t met many from the nicer areas around San Jose.

they are also cracking down on the “perpetual” tourism here. In theory you can stay here for up to 90 days, leave the country for three days or more and then return. But they are not always allowing re-entry automatically anymore. Last I checked a few years ago about 1/4 million cash solves the problem. You can buy residency by  making a deposit in that amount to a national bank. You are allowed to withdraw a small percentage of that each year and then after 3 or 5 years or something you become a resident.

  16. Today I was looking up flights to Costa Rica for some friends flying from San Antonio. Traveling the first week of Feb. I’ve never seen fares this cheap. Depending on travel days there were good flights without the long layovers for under 400 on both United and Southwest. Even though you are MSP and traveling a week earlier there may be some really good deals. I’m usually down in Manuel Antonio/Quepos but just got to Jaco for 6 days. Hotels are as cheap or expensive as you want them all over this country. Here was my view about an hour ago.

  17. Yeah that’s a nonstory as far as tourists are concerned.

In other news we had a poor tournament. Day 1 we went the wrong direction and finished in 25th out of 50. Day 2 was a lot better but we had some bad luck, losing a blue marlin at the boat that would have put us into 3rd on the day. Instead we tied for 10th. Leaving in a few hours to go up to Los Suenos. We will be practice fishing tomorrow and Wednesday and then fishing the tournament  Thursday-Saturday.
