I haven't read any of the replies yet but I'm offering my HSO's anyways. We need to quickly go to a 12 or 16-team playoff. The 4-team playoff is an abject disaster. The best kids want to play for the schools in the playoff -- that's Bama, Clemson, Oklahoma, Georgia and a couple of interlopers here and there. They go every year and therefore gobble up the talent. The bowls have been gutted by players (and teams, aggy) opting out so who gives a fuck moving forward. They're done. Just get 16 (or 12 teams) together, incorporate how many bowls you need to set the bracket, and play a tournament. The other 25+ bowls can invite teams to come play but some players will sit out. That's where we are now.

I don't follow this logic at all. If all the talented players wanted to just go to the playoff, Georgia (or any other SEC team) would never get any talent as they all have the hardest path to the playoff (most years) because of Alabama. Also, you claim Georgia always gets to the playoffs, and therefor gobbles up all the talent, yet this is only their second appearance in 8 years. And you say the 4-team playoff is an abject disaster, yet it has worked out right pretty much every single year. Does not compute.

    Playoff appearances over 8 years...

    Alabama - 7
    Clemson - 6
    Ohio St - 4
    Oklahoma - 4

    Georgia - 2
    Notre Dame - 2
    Oregon - 1
    Florida St - 1
    Michigan St - 1
    Washington - 1
    LSU - 1
    Michigan - 1
    Cincinnati - 1

College football has a parity problem. Not sure how expanding the playoff is going to change that. Maybe NIL will help it?

Dallas Observer food critic budget is not generous.  it's much better at the DMN.  Leslie Brenner's budget when she was at the DMN was obscene.

Isn’t one of the Observer food critics like 20 years old or some shit? I don’t care how well heeled or traveled or experienced or whatever you are, if you’re that young, you probably don’t have enough time on this earth to be critiquing restaurants for a living.

good lord.  but if you say it's phenomenal, i'll try it.  we did Monarch and paid through the nose, but were not disappointed.  i miss FT33.  can't wait to try this on a special occasion.  probably not too early to look at Valentine's Day.

Not for the faint of wallet, but it’s appropriately priced IMO. We’ve been 4 times now and I’ve yet to find a single misstep. Every bite of food has been perfect, every staff member from hostess to waiters to bussers to managers to bartenders have been flawless, every drink has been prepared perfectly, phenomenal wine list, space is great. We’ve given them plenty of chances to fuck something up. Even something small. But they haven’t yet. I guess you get what you pay for.

That menu looks great.  Give me a steak tartare, a seared foie gras, a wedge salad, and couple of icy cold gin martinis served up with a lemon twist.  If I'm still hungry, I'll have a couple of olives in my next martinis.

Yep, it’s exactly that type of place. I’ve had a lot of martinis there and each one has been perfection. Hell I’d probably take up smoking if they’d let me, just to complete the total package.

Homemade sauce is the way to go. But this is why people get pasta sauce in a jar. Some nights when you’re just trying to sling plates of spaghetti and meatballs in front of your kids, you don’t have an hour.

I get it, and I've been there. My kids are adults and out of the house, so not as rushed.

Kids or no kids, sometimes you just don’t feel like that level. Especially when I can make you a solid 9 from scratch in about an hour and I can make you a pretty strong 8 from a jar in about 15-20 mins.

  5. Have to plug Tango Room. My new favorite steakhouse in town right now. It’s in the old FT33 spot (although it looks nothing like it now). Small space, kind of a New York cool old Frank Sinatra type vibe. Food and service is the best I’ve had in Dallas in a really really long time. It’s chill and quiet. Great date place. Prepare your wallet’s anus, but worth it IMO.

Has anyone heard an update on Carbone?  Thought it was supposed to be opening this summer.

Was in the parking lot where it’s located last night and it’s looking real close to being ready. Signage is up and from what we could see, it’s pretty far along on the construction. Valet for the place we were there for said the GM at Carbone told him end of January.

  7. X-posting from the Dallas BBQ thread...

Sorry to have to report this...went to Terry Black's (Dallas) last week and it was really really meh. I took the family who was in from out of town for Christmas and of course, I oversold the hell out of it to them, only to show up and have it be way below average. Brisket was roast beef and sausage was so overcooked, we almost couldn't eat it. Pork ribs were just okay and they're normally great. Horribly disappointing top to bottom.

It was 2 days before Christmas so maybe they had their C team working holiday hours or something? Or maybe some were out with Covid? I know whoever was running the pits definitely wasn't the same guy that was running them last time we were there when everything was great. Hoping whatever the reason, it was just a glitch and they'll be back to normal next time, but that drastic of a swing in consistency is concerning.

I feel like this has a lot more restaurants out of my wheelhouse -- Indian, Pakistani, Afghan, African, etc -- than on most lists. I wish I could find a 1-100 list without the write-up for each. There are some interesting omissions. Like I don't believe Monarch is in there.

What a hipster douchebag list. The Dallas Observer sucks such sweaty balls. How do you fuck up a list with 100 restaurants? I mean, you have 100 restaurants and miss on arguably the #1? If it were a top 10 or something, fine you just missed it, but this is 100 fucking restaurants and you miss that?

No Al Biernat's either. It's not the best place ever or anything, but if you're including steak houses (which you do as we're in Dallas by god Texas), it's always in the conversation for #1. And there's no question it's top 100 in town.

The writers probably couldn’t get into Monarch.

    They probably couldn't afford it.

Can’t find the churning thread so this might as well do…

For the last 4 years I’ve had companion pass and A-list, mostly leveraging CC points and business travel. With ZERO of the latter this year it’s been a bit of a lift, but I ended up 4K points short of both and Customer Service won’t do shit for me.

So, I’m done… won’t be flying this garbage tin can again and am looking for better CC options. Already have the Chase SR which I’m also looking to ditch.

American and AE the best options?

Wait, so Southwest won’t give you free points when you didn’t earn enough and you’re blaming them?

Awesome. I just made reservations for a business visit in January. This place looks good.

It’s pretty great. Be sure to get a blueberry red bull and vodka when you’re there if you need a little pickmeup. Our waiter at B&E put us onto them. He called it liquid crack. He was right.

LOL.  Nothing that fancy.  Just some things I had bought specifically for the Paris trip.

Earlier this year,  I went to the first Patron cocktail party back at the Met to preview the Surrealist exhibit.  My friend and I went overboard and went full cocktail dresses and heels.  We were definitely overdressed.  The next one I went to in December, we definitely dialed it down a bit.  Slacks and loafers, button downs and sweaters.  We were much more comfy.

Hey, could be worse. You could have a full new wardrobe of island wear for a Caribbean beach vacation that got canceled that you have to try to wear in NYC this winter.

Yeah, this was a very, very grown up NYE party.  Black tie.  It would be the first time I would have gone out for NYE in a long, long time.  Sigh.  Oh well.

That is true.  I will be packing it to take to Paris and hopefully, I will have a place.  As it is, I have a lot of other things I need to somehow wear that I had bought for a winter Paris trip that is now a May trip.  Will have to start bringing them out to go to restaurants and bars in NYC.  :D

Yeah I promise you won’t be the first person to pull up at Keens in a ball gown 😂

Disney just needs to get the deal done to spin off ESPN channels to end all this crap. My guess is they have run the numbers and realized its not worth near as much as they thought it would be if they spin it off into stand alone streaming platform as most people will only subscribe for partial periods of the year.

Way more money in forcing it on people whether they want it or not through package deals with providers than offering it a la carte.

Well, fuck.  So the New Year party I was going to, they have decided to cancel given the crazy rise in COVID cases.  Fortunately, they are refunding me the ticket.  And instead of the party, they are going to do two seatings for dinner.  I have asked to attend the later seating.  Probably for the best, but it still fucking sucks.

NYE seems a little too amateur for you anyway.

Yeah, I have done that too, but I actually had a new black Valentino to wear to this thing.  Sigh.

That's too bad, planned on staying at Bally's for March Madness and was looking forward to BLT.

BLT has become a pretty big chain over the last few years. Haven't been to the one in Vegas, but I'd guess you're not missing much. And I'm 100% sure you can find better steak places in Vegas.

Anybody who gets to eat there more frequently than I do tell me what happened to Pecan Lodge? I haven’t eaten there in a couple years but when I was going through Dallas I always tried to hit up some brisket. Now it dropped out of Top 50 and seems to draw a less than enthusiastic response here.

Quality and consistency has slipped over the last few years. Probably due to growth and complacency. Happens to a lot of places, not just BBQ

In both of these series, I'm meh on Old West type of shit (nothing will ever, ever replace the Leone triptik in my opinion) and it's hard to avoid tired stereotypes (even in these) but the acting, props and cinematography can go a long way (I mean if you can't film beautiful landscapes out west, you suck as a camera specialist).

Taylor Sheridan is a pretty legit horseman in real life, so he actually does a pretty good job at avoiding a lot of the tired stereotypes. But yeah, even he has to include some to appeal to the masses.

The current season of Yellowstone is a steaming pile of shit. The first three are pretty entertaining, though.

Not to Yellowstone the 1883 thread, but there's actually a valid explanation for this. I can't go into details on here, but let's just say this is a transition/rebuilding season. Expect it to get better next season.
