  1. Ugh...I hope not. We need her at her best.
  2. I like that TX state is making lots of changes in their line-up, trying to give Texas different looks, but Texas is making the adjustment.
  3. Blair had another knee surgery and is still on the team. But Katarina has been taken off the roster on the Texas website.
  4. Butler serves into the net on match point....maybe freshman jitters (along with Jhenna)? I'd like to see them both pick up their play tomorrow.
  5. This is probably the worst I've seen Jhenna set with the limited amount of games she has played....hopefully it's just first tourney jitters.
  6. SFA slowing chipping away with Jhenna struggling with her location and Shook now setting.
  7. Put me in the camp that was initially excited to have a bigger setter that could block. But that really doesn't matter if she can't put the ball where the hitters need it. I think that was most apparent when Shook entered in the last set against WV...the hitters were once again adjusting to her sets and either tipping/making errors. Shook came in with the pedigree (coming out of SPVB which is notorious for developing setters) and accolades to be a game-changing setter, but has regressed since she's been here. In all honesty, she probably needs a setter coach on staff who can constantly provide feedback with her setting technique and decision making skills....similar to what she received at the club level. But Tonya and Erik aren't going anywhere and teams are only allotted 2 Assistant coaches. I thought Jhenna's sets to Johnson were on-point last match, and continues to improve with Butler (the set heights are there, now it's just the timing). She and Yaazie have a really good connection at the right pin, something that the team lacked last year that should have been a strength (with a returning 1st Team All-American in Nwanebu). I think the tips from White are now deliberate instead of necessity, and she is swinging more freely like she did her Freshman season. And hopefully winning those accolades will elevate Logan's game for the tourney, that she will be playing to prove that she deserves those awards.
  8. Sad to see Katarina go...but that does open up a scholarship to pick up another hitter or another setter. But if Shook decides to transfer, that would open up her scholarship as well. I'm not too worried about it. Elliott and his staff made a lot of changes in this past off-season that have made this team successful this season. So I'm sure he is already planning ahead.
  9. I was hoping for the 4 seed but didn't think we would get it with the number of losses we had. Honestly, I'd rather be going to Provo than to the other seeds' home courts anyways. The team looks more confident and loose with Jhenna setting. And the hitters are smashing down balls now knowing they are going to be set a hittable ball every time they take off for their approach. Back row play and serving have even improved. Teams are going to go after Jhenna's block, so the back row defense is just going to have to make adjustments...but I like our chances to make a deep run.
  10. In Texas' system, that right back position has to pass the ball on serve-receive, serve, play back row defense, and will be the secondary setter on the floor. Shook only does 2 of those skills well (setting and back row defense) and the setting can be debatable. When Shook was the starting setter, the only reason Claire beat out Jhenna for that spot was because Jhenna's passing on serve-receive was holding her back, but Jhenna does every other skill better....(still confused why Jerritt kept Claire back there the whole season when he could have been developing Jhenna, but that point is moot at the moment.)
  11. Hopefully, today was just an off-day for Logan....we are going to need her to be at her best in the tourney.
  12. Yep, we are gonna be either #4 or #5 IMO
  13. You can tell the setting difference with Shook in...players want to rip the ball but location is not where it needs to be.
  14. For real, too much turkey or something....she needs to pick up her play.
  15. Brionne and Asjia should be a good tandem in the middle next year with Molly backing them up. I'd like to see Katarina's arm swing get stronger in the off-season and see what she can do with better/consistent setting on the RS. I think Elliott will give her every opportunity to earn her spot, but she will be challenged with Skylar coming in. Skylar naturally hits better on the left, so there may be a lot of adjustments she may need to make to be effective on the right pin. It'd be nice to have Molly and Skylar come in during the spring time to get a head-start with their collegiate careers, but I don't think either with be early enrollees. Setting will be interesting next season. Will Ashley jump ship or will she stay and fight for her spot back? If Jhenna does become the only other setter on the roster, does Elliott find her a back-up or will he recruit someone who can actually challenge her for the starting role? It'd be nice if Jerritt could pick up a transfer setter with Jhenna's setting skills but who can actually be a blocking presence in the front row.
  16. I'm pretty sure Jerritt will be giving Jhenna a scholarship after this season. I still think he needs to bring in a transfer setter to either quarterback the team or to back-up Jhenna. I personally would prefer the former (especially if she is taller and can provide the same setting consistency), so Jhenna can replace Claire on the court and still be a secondary setter on the court. I foresee Logan and Micaya playing every rotation next year and Autumn only rotating in if either struggles in the back row. The middles should be fine with an experienced Butler and a red-shirted O'Neal. Depth may be a problem if Orie decides to transfer, so incoming FR Molly Phillips may need to be ready to play because I don't see Westerlund seeing the court. I'd like to see Katarina focus on her arm strength in the off-season and become a more terminal hitter on the right pin. If not, Skylar Fields will be seeing the court over her. And Petersen will own the Libero position until she graduates.
  17. Even though overall ball control wasn't as strong in this match, Jhenna's setting is steadily improving...especially setting to the middles with Brionne hitting over .400 and Morgan hitting over .800. I've been really impressed with how well Jhenna is connecting with the middle hitters... Shook won't even attempt the sets Jhenna is putting up to the middles because she usually whiffs on them. Claire Hahn needs to step up her game because teams are really going to start going after her when she's playing defense behind Jhenna's block. Unfortunately, there is no one else on the bench that can play right back defense and Hahn tends to fold under pressure. I'm betting Shook has already mentally checked out and planning her transfer... she was the #6 recruit in her class and just got replaced by a walk-on DS player who has the team hitting close to .400 in the sets she has started as setter. The writing is on the wall. And if Shook does get subbed into the match for whatever reason, I predict it's not going to be pretty.
  18. If true, I think Elliott really needs to evaluate the type of setter that will be successful here at Texas and bring her in as a transfer. Jhenna's great, but I don't think she is a long-term solution to the setter position when there are TALLER setters out there with a similar or better skill sets...just gotta find one that will mesh well with the current nucleus of girls. We have 6'1 setter Naomi Cabello coming in with the class of 2020, so Jerritt needs a place holder for the 2019 season with Jhenna backing her up. Someone we might want to keep an eye out for is 5'11 Jr Norene Iosia who is the starting setter at Hawaii and former HS/Club teammate of Yaazie. Norene played for the USA WJNT and is the sister of 2021 incoming Libero recruit Kalani Iosia. She is currently having to share setting duties at Hawaii b/c she's also the Opposite when she is in the front row, since Hawaii's pin hitters suck this year. Hawaii is in rebuilding mode after Dave Shoji retired 2 years ago and there are rumors that she is looking to transfer upon completion of this season.
  19. Texas hits .386 for the night with a 5'8 setter!
  20. I hate this rotation. They are going to need to figure out who can attack from the back row.
  21. Passing/Ball control has improved from last year and I just thought that we needed consistent setting to play better....now we have that! I'd rather take our chances with good setting and let the hitters do what they do best...and the chips will fall where they fall with Jhenna's blocking.
  22. And they leave Logan in the back row at the end of this set? I think Jerritt's been reading the Surly!
  23. So far in this match, I've seen so many hustle plays that Texas would not have won with Shook setting....
  24. Micaya all smiles.....haven't seen that since Chloe Collins' setting....
