It’s why I put the Dabo caveat in there. Personally I think he’s going to drive them into the ground and they’ll quickly fall off because he’s stuck in the past era and won’t adapt. But the pieces are there for them to be a top 5 program moving forward IMO.

I think you've got to tier them based on proximity to population centers and overall desirability.  Fundamentally it's all about the reward for the student athlete and that's probably a combination of NIL or whatever form athlete compensation ends up being 5-10 seasons from now, NFL preparation and student quality of life (i.e., facilities, education, not being surrounded by thousands of preposterous entitled fake Army officers).

This is going to mean that UT, Georgia, and USC win out when corporate interests can obtain good value on NIL participation (each is in also in a population centers that has a gravity that's not tied to the university).

Ohio State could arguably be including but I've been to Cleveland.  Unless Cincinnati is loads better then I think their appeal is ultimately too regional and there's too much competition for the Chicago market for anyone to own it.

Florida has all the potential to be in the first tier but probably lacks the coach capable of exploiting their advantages off the field.

LSU, A&M, and OU in particular are hindered when UT is up.

If schools like Miami, UCLA, UVA, and one of the Arizona schools decided to really prioritize program building they'd have aptitude to move up.

This goes for both of you...

Whether or not a school currently has a good coach or a shitty coach doesn't make much of a long-term difference to the overall "ranking" of that school.

To me it’s Ohio State, Texas, and Georgia as top dogs in the NIL era moving forward, with Michigan, Florida, USC, Oregon, and Clemson (if they don’t let Dabo run them into the ground) all capable of moving into that top group long term. If Harbaugh stays then I think you’d have to include Michigan in that top tier now.

Then I think Bama is in a tier of its own due to prestige, current state of program infrastructure, etc. It’s hard to predict what will happen to them when all we can say for sure right now is “multiple teams have caught up to them and one for sure has passed them” and they just lost the best college coach of all time.

Then you have ND, LSU, Aggy, Penn State, Washington, Auburn. I may be missing someone. But all of those programs feel like they have certain institutional issues that prevents them from competing at a sustained top 3-5 level year over year moving forward.

Clemson is Tier3 at best. They had a lucky 5 year run that's not indicative of their place in the world of college football. They're basically at the same level as Auburn.

Pretty easily. They've never won anything, of note, in 3 major sports, in almost 100 years.

I can substitite Vanderbilt and GA Tech into that list, some of the numbers shift, but it would be almost as compelling an argument.

But if I overaly Michigan State to your graph, it's pretty identical as well. Are they in your top 5?

No serious person actually believes Aggy is a top 5 job. It was more just making a point that taking your qualifications into account, A&M might appear to be a top 5 job, and that's why Aggies think so highly of themselves. They forget that there's a certain je ne sais quoi  that they are bereft of, which relegates them into the afterthought category.

Why in the fuck was this discussion started in this fucking thread at a time where we have an open coaching position and our current HC is being mentioned for another job.

Wait, you are asking why people are discussing what coaching jobs are desirable in the Texas Coaches thread when there are desirable coaching jobs available - which might be offered to the Texas Coaches.

Against my better judgement, but knowing it's better than cheese puns or some other painful swerve into a topic like, oh, lets say debating the implications of using NTTIAWRT on a message board, how would some of you folks define what makes a "top 5 program" in the year of our Lord, 2024? Because "it's always been one as far as I've been watching" doesn't really do it for me. The top things on my list would be, in no particularly order, fertile recruiting region, how big a city and how many busineses, financial wherewithal and number of living alumni, confererence, facilities, and existing brand and history, academic restrictions.

I sure as fuck wouldn't have put Michigan in that list over Ohio State until maybe this year when Michigan showed themselves to not be interested in ethics or  of the high morality they claim. And I still wouldn't becuase I think Ohio State has a more rabid alumni base geared towards football, and Columbus offers more NIL opportunities than Ann Arbor.

Bama has an alumni and net money net worth problem. Are they top 5? Maybe. But I hardly think it's a slam dunk, it's a fucking argument.

    Texas A&M (ranked 1-5 , with 5 being best)
    fertile recruiting region - 5
how big a city and how many busineses - 2.5
financial wherewithal and number of living alumni - 5
    confererence - 5
    facilities - 5++
existing brand and history - 3
    academic restrictions - 5

Tell me they're not a top 5 job.

You sound like the Texas version of this guy from Mexico City sitting next to me in the taxi van from the airport in St. Thomas.

Tries to humble brag about being in St Thomas, but doesn't realize that sharing a taxi is not baller, and gets called out for taking creeper pics of his new crush.
