  1. Well I think this is the perfect Bible for the Bible Thumpin' 2nd and 3rd marriage, Let's Go Brandon sing along "Christian" families of the far right.

Though I think I prefer to refer to this blaspheming version of the Bible Trump is hawking, as... "The Forceful Fingerers Bible!"

Mid-week show at HoB in Houston...gonna suck, but has to be done.

Saving grace is I know they will play loud enough to drown out all the talkers.

Why the fuck do folks insist on incessantly talking about bullshit rather than watch the fucking show?  One of my pet peeves.

That and trying to shove your way to the fucking front past all the folks that were giving each other reasonable space for the entire opening act.

Now I will stand down off my soap box...

  3. First rule of Prep Club, is there are NO farts!

Second Rule of Prep club, is you have to talk about Prep Club.

Third rule of Prep club is you must say Propofol!

There... I summed up everything.  I waited way too long to get mine, and I was lucky, only had a few small polyps and nothing of concern.  But it really is a simply procedure and I think there is something inherently fearful about the butthole in hetero men.  Thus men unnecessarily have severe consequences because of an irrational fear.  It's a procedure, and yes prep sucks, but the reason is you are trying give the camera the best view possible.  And little bits of shit make the job a lot harder to get a "sure" result.  Just look at the prep as a way to kick start some weight loss if you are so inclined.

But now for a joke-  On thing I have always thought would be hilarious would be to walk into the waiting room early in the morning, not unlike Bill Murray in Caddie Shack.  Rolling in with large black garden hose draped over my shoulder, with one end dragging on the ground.  Then shout to the front desk, "Where does Doc want this?"  I would love just to see the looks on folks faces waiting for the procedure...

This is the correct answer.  Funny thing is Herb Alpert on Pandora is my go to early AM surf fishing music.  Interestingly a surf guitar medley from Junior Brown is part of that mix.

    ---------------------------------

But keeping on topic I had to return a rent car yesterday, and wanted to get to the body shop to get the wife's car.  And it takes the two people in front of me 25 minutes AFTER I walked in to get it all together.  Apparently it's not normal to not have your driver's license when renting a car, and you can use your mom's.  Not understanding the need to have more than simply the TDL number is not enough for them to give you a vehicle.  Guy was wearing  headphones the entire time bitching, and mom was concerned about the charges going on her card.  Was it going to be an actual charge, or just a hold?  When the guy asked where the car was being repaired, he said,  "Undecided." Then said , "Probably the Maserati dealership."  Which I thought was odd, given the Mom's concern about a $50 hold on her card. But after the calls to the main office, they could indeed put the car under her license.  So he could get something to drive, but she didn't want to pay extra for son without the license present to drive it...

But then it happened, and everything became clear when the guy turned around.  It wasn't a maroon wife beater the guy was wearing, it was a Texas A&M maroon basketball jersey style wife beater.

As they went out to get their vehicle, I could see the poor customer service guy, as they let him know they did not want the Ford Edge they wanted the pickup truck next to it.  As the guy came back in to change out the keys, I said, "Let them know that the truck will likely cost them out of pocket."  After another couple minute discussion, Aggie Maserati son, and "don't charge my card" Aggie Mom get into the original Ford Edge.

So what should have taken 5 minutes on a normal day, with normal people at Enterprise took 30 minutes.  I was tempted to ask, "What kind of Maserati?" wearing my UT Columbia Fishing shirt, but instead I simply smiled inside thinking, "These fucking Aggie jokes write themselves."

None. You don't worry about extensions after the 1st season.

Tell that to Old Miss.  When you head coach loses the last two to A&M, and gets a contract extension.  Maybe it was "automatic" if he got past his double secret probation and stayed out of jail.

I think it's funny that so many folks think that talent alone wins games. And that somehow a former head coach who shit the bed, now two years removed, was the "real reason" for winning under Terry.  But hey, a lot of folks have never coached a game in their lives.  So I understand their confusion!

    And judge the opinions accordingly.

    1. Shit, I started this thread, but I disagree that Terry's seat is getting hotter.

Year 1: Elite 8 (Yeah, I know, there are questions about how much credit he gets here)

Year 2: Round of 32 (at least, but probably ends here)

Those aren't tournament results that make a coach's seat hotter.

    2. I wholeheartedly agree with the second bolded group of text.

I honestly hope it's not "getting hotter" but I also point out that we have gotten rid of some coaches with pretty impressive teams this march madness, to try and give some perspective.

  7. We fired Chris Beard, because he was too fucking stupid to keep on the staff. But he did lose his last two games of the Old Miss season to powerhouse A&M, and got a contract extension, just the other day.

We ran off Shaka smart who avoided a formal firing, by staying a step ahead of the disgruntled.  He is a #2 seed with Marquette today.

Before Shaka, we fired Rick Barnes after 17 years for going 20-14 and losing in the first round of the NCAA tourney.  He is a #2 seed with Tennessee, and crushed it yesterday.

This years team is an enigma.  Plays some of the greatest basketball I have seen, followed by some of the crappiest basketball I have seen, and that's often in the same game.  We did not play well yesterday.  Disu and Abmas might as well have been freshmen subs coming off the bench, for their contributions.  Never good when your best players are sucking.  But we got past it, and now we will face our former coach Rick Barnes tomorrow night.

It will be a good barometer of the team Saturday.  I expect, Tennessee to beat us, and perhaps soundly.  If Abmas can only make 5-15 FG, 1-6 threes, and con only make 1 of 3 free throws, we get drilled.  If Disu goes 5-18 FG, 0-6 threes and makes 2 of 3 free throws, we get drilled.  But let me ask this, would anybody here have bet me $100, or $1000 that Disu and Abmas would only contribute a total of 26 points last night?   Christ that first few minutes was simply painful to watch as the shots were just crap for both of them.

Good news is our defense was stifling.  But it's not going to be at all easy to get past Barnes.  And in Terry's defense, it's hard to fucking scheme offensively when your normal go to players can barely hit the fucking rim.  The best thing I think Terry did coaching besides his general defensive scheme was calling time out at the end of the first half and setting p Abmas for the 3 pointer, simply to try to give him some confidence. That was his only 3 of the game. Wait... the ONLY three of the game.

I did not have Texas going past Tennessee on my bracket, but hoping and paying that the yips from last night, become the at least reasonable shooting that Disu, Abmas and Terry all expect on game day.  We played like shit, and we still moved on.  In a tournament, moving on is all that counts.  But it's hard when one of your best guys is sucking, extra hard when your two best guys are sucking.  But you have to tip your hat to guys like Hunter and Weaver who tried their best to make good things happen.  We made ONE FUCKING 3 POINT SHOT THE WHOLE FUCKING GAME! That in and of itself is mind blowing.

Terry's seat is unquestionably getting hotter.  And there is no question that he has not had the success overall that either Barnes or Shaka have had in their careers. But I am rooting for the guy, for multiple reasons.  I hope like hell that we can play one of our best games of the season, and get past Tennessee.  As that is what it's going to take, probably our best game of the season.

  8. Los Coast is good.  I ran into one of the guys I speak to regularly at Hopdoddy and he said he volunteered to get his platinum badge.  I may go for it next year, simply as I would probably enjoy the work part as much as the badge.  My wife does NOT want to iron man my way though bands, and I would likely us the badge more for the late night shows at places I already go to.  Or old like me, with the flexibility to do this sort of shit.  I ran into some gals at Eldorado a while back that basically organized the Kerrville folk festival.  Not my cup of tea really, but they said they would hire me to bartend and that I could get certified online in a couple hours for like $10.  Haven't bartended for 35 years, but I thought I do have a travel trailer and maybe a week in Kerrville might be fun?

Heck honestly my wife might like a break from going to SXSW, as she gets wiped out in two days.  So school me on this Volunteer thing?

Anyhow just wondering how much time and what badges you guys got?  I assume this link is fairly accurate SXSW volunteer rules

  9. Most likely way out for Trump is that the Murdering Saudi Prince he helped, and who gave Jared $2 billion for a business in which he had now experience, will help Donald out.  Likely with a cash purchase of one of his golf courses, and giving Donald an option to buy back in if he wins the Presidency and can use his powers of office to help a foreign power.

If the Saudi's can by George W. Bush's oil company (I know irony) so he could buy into the Texas rangers, certainly they can throw Donald a lifeline.

  10. You gave Riff Raff your money,

    What would yo' Mama say?

    Sound dumb you mother fucker,

    and yo' money gone away...

    Fifty for the Rapper

and One Hundred for the tape.

Really thought I'd win the contest,

but got pee on my leg instead!

    Chorus

You gave your money to a rapper, what did you fuckin' think?

That poo poo smells like roses, just cuz that Outcast song you sang?"

    Now you want that money!

    You wonder who to ask,

would you kindly Mr. Riff Raff,

give me that old $150 back?

Riff Riff slowly turned, and then began to grin.

His golden grill a shinin', as he then began to laugh.

You gave Riff Raff your money... you really thought you'd win?

You prolly think The Butthole Surfers own a place where you go swim!

    Chorus

You gave your money to a rapper, what did you fuckin' think?

That poo poo smells like roses, just cuz that Outcast song you sang?"

    Now THAT might have won....

Bounced around to different places on the east side yesterday. Significantly fewer people than previous years but that's cool with me. Local band Moon Kill was the best new discovery of the day, gave me Kyuss vibes. Fat Dog was pretty fun. Daikaiju is always entertaining.

I was wondering if it was just my perception?  As while C-Boys was steadily crowded, SXSJ for example was not at capacity, and the sidewalk next to the venue was not packed as usual.

Best show of the day for us was C.C.Adcock and the Lafayette Marquis, at C-Boys outdoors.  They were supposed to be joined by Tommy McLain, but he was under the weather.  But they put on a great show, and were a LOT more rocking than I thought.  The wife and I danced our asses off near the front of the stage, and we generally had a blast.  Went down to try and see the West Texas Exiles and Tommy Stinson, but the push to see the Exiles led us to realize that getting in for Stinson was gonna be tough so we just went down and grabbed a little snack and Big Larry at Hopdoddy.  Even though Hop has fallen down in quality in general their sweet potato fries are still the best in town.  But as stc said, we were able to easily get seats at the bar there this year each time we dropped in whereas last year, it was a much tougher seat to get. But seeing Adcock made the day.  We drifted back from the front of the stage and let other folks get close who haven't seen Alejandro Excovedo

Seems to me that the crowds are less for likely two reasons.  First is that a lot of the shows that disappeared during covid are making a return as more sponsors are simply creating more venues for folks to choose from.  Second might be the fact that the weather was going to be sketchy and folks that might have just driven in and stayed with friends for the weekend may have been reduced.  Not as much fun trying to dodge rain, than drifting around with lovely weather.

Again ended the day at Eldorado Cafe, which always hits the spot for us.  And quite frankly, much like the Continental Club and C-Boys, I much prefer giving my money to local folks who take care of their people and give me a great product, whether music or food.

I think we may have ended our run last night, but still watching the weather to see if it clears enough to make it worthwhile to take another run at things.  But with it raining pretty hard at our house right now, that may be a weather hill too tall to climb.  But have fun out there, and again tip the folks that take care of you.  And tip them if you are just taking up space!

  12. Caught another gem yesterday indoors at C-boys with Charlie Sexton stepping up joining Eve Monsees heading the Mystic Knights of the Sea indoors at C-Boys.  Hadn't see Charlie that close up in a while, I forgot that his hands are like someone blended him with E.T. with his reaches.

Chuck Prophet and the Mission Express put on a great show, and damned if Ray Wylie Hubbard didn't put on the best show I have ever seen him play, and I think I have seen him at least 8 times in the last decade.  He kept joking that he needed to bring it after following Chuck Prophet, and damned if he didn't!

I missed them as I was inside watching Charlie Sexton but folks were raving about Angelo Moore and the Brand New Step so a shout out the them just based on the buzz of other folks tossing accolades the Moore and Company.

Walked down and saw a few minutes of Shannon and the Clams and they were certainly fun, but after three days and 10,000 steps a day, I just wanted to go back up North to Eldorado cafe for a Rita and some flan to talk about the day with the wife.  Good times as always, and it's funny how my sweet wife goes down just to make me happy. As she hates the crowds and close quarters, and rarely is a goof like me standing at the center front of the stage.

ALSO P.S.A. - If you have not invested in a pair of good noise reducing ear buds, please take the time to get some.  I spent years leaving concerts or nights after working at Club Foot with my ears ringing in the morning.  So I love to get close where it's loud, but I love my ear buds that still allow the music through, but simply not at an (actually) deafening level.  Anyhow just my two cents.

Today probably camping at C-Boys and hoping that the biggest of the storms were the ones that woke me up and hour ago.  Have fun and tip your bartenders and waitresses. And if you are old non-drinker and you are taking a premium table, and not giving your waitress some cash every so often... shame on you!  You are literally taking food off their table.  Just reach in your fucking pocket and give back, and remember when you were young and needed those tips!  In other words don't be a fucking asshole!

Have fun out there and watch the traffic not to get run down!

  13. Well bounced back and forth yesterday between C-Boys, Continental and SXSJ (to lesser extent) and found one jewel among the unknowns.  A band from the Netherlands called "The Vices."  Played indoors opposite Tameca Jones at the SOCO stomp.  Interesting use of the loops/synth with some rock n roll.    I popped in the earplugs and stepped right up front, and they kicked ass.  The kid leading the band showed off his guitar chops toward the end of the show and the kid could rip, even by Austin standards of quality.  But he used the "less is more" on the riffs, which made them stand out more.  Anyhow I saw they only play two more official shows, so you will only catch them with a wrist band.  Tameca Jones was solid as always, and Michigander was good too.

Weather will likely come into play today, but it's Texas and might rain for 2 minutes, so I cannot be stopped!   Need to make a real plan today.

All of the South by San Jose shows are all ages shows.  You might look at pairing SXSJ with one of the outdoor Auditorium Shores Shows.  The Chronicle usually highlights all ages shows.  I would think that the shows at Guero's might also be all ages.  If nothing else waiting for an outdoor table at Hopdoddy or Guero's and just people watching would be fun with your kid.  But SXSJ is likely where I could be looking at.  There are usually free shows at the YETI store as well.

I would also say try to go Wednesday or Thurs rather than fighting the weekend crowds, if you can work that out.

  18. Erwin Center was OK as a venue, but certainly not one I went to a lot after college.  Only show I REALLY regret not going to was walking up at the last minute for Tom Petty his last time in town.  Simply as my wife never got to see him live and I had considered it, but did not follow through, thinking... next time....

The best way to see music is in a smaller venue, and while I would have loved for my wife to see Petty at "the Drum" half the reason I did not go is that there is no way in hell he would have compared to the show I saw him play at the Austin Opry House in 1980? Highlight for Erwin Center was likely a couple of Springsteen shows.

Well normally I would have a massive plan of attack to post for you guys, but I am taking care of my Dad right now, and that has thrown a big monkey wrench into things.  HOWEVER!!!  I give a huge thumbs up to heading to South Congress and bouncing back and forth between Continental Club, South by San Jose, and the SOCO Stomp at C-Boys.

Tues - Kicking things off by heading to Continental Club for the Latinpoluzza for a show or two, then C-boys early to grub on some free crawfish and Zydeco Music at Lafayette Live

Wed-  gonna try to catch Jimmy Jazz's Daughter's band Die Spitz for a rare early show at the Parish, 2:20 was start time I saw. Then likely the soco drift around.

Thurs-  Drift around until Chuck Prophet at C-boys

Fri, Early C-boys with West Texas Exiles and Tommy Stinson,  Alejandro Escovedo would be great (think he's to SXSJ Saturday?)

Sat, likely not much beyond early shows, and a try for English Teeth depending on the crowd.

Might go see Restos at C-boys Sunday at 1 pm as the Early Sudnay shit can be good as the kids have been partied out of attending

y'all got anything better than the chronicle's list of day parties? feel like there used to be a bunch of websites that listed the day shows but now it's pretty much just the chronicle.

    https://www.austinchronicle.com/sxsw/unofficial/

The calendars at C-Boys and Continental Club have ACCURATE times listed for the free day shows, so there's that.  One "pro tip" is to cross reference with DO512.com in that you can search their site more effectively for times.  They try to put up accurate times, but they are NOT always accurate.  One of the best features they have is that you can click on a band name and see where else they are playing.  I religiously use Do512 as a cross reference against the Austin Chron lists to narrow down the times. I also like that you can search by "start time" for the time events start.  SXSJ times always seem to drift in the early day and tighten up come evening, and you generally don't know accurate times until you can take a picture of the listing at the front of the venue, unfortunately.

But get out there "kids!"  I call South Congress daytime the early in the week shows 'old people spring break' but nice to drift early before stuff gets too crowded to move from venue to venue easily.  And toss a dollar or two into any bands tip jar, and take care of those bartenders and waitresses!!!
