  1. I literally rode the train for the first time last week, and can’t speak to a night trip. That said, it was clean and in good shape. It’s also stupid cheap ($3 per person each way). I didn’t a get any sort of vibe that it’d be unsafe.
  2. The light rail will get you from the airport to the Westlake stop in downtown in about 40 mins or so. Plenty of good tried and true recommendations here. Having lived there for almost 4 years, I found the best food options to be in Cap Hill. Spinasse, Bateau, Terra Plata, Mamnoon, Stateside, Altura, Momiji, and many more. For bars, Foreign National or Canon are awesome. Rein House isn’t anything special unless you just really love Bocce Ball, IMO. Other spots of note are Wa’z in Belltown, Homer in Beacon Hill, and Sawyer + Walrus and the Carpenter in Ballard. You should head to Ballard for their Sunday farmer’s market if you’re able to. It’s probably the best market outside of Pike’s Place and there is plenty to see and do while checking out the tents. Mini cinnamon donuts are a must.

  5. Probably Barrell, but maybe both. Ultimately I crave variety over consistency. MGP is MGP. There are a few different mash bills and various ages, but the experience is generally consistent within those dimensions. Granted, it’s consistently very damn good. Barrell is doing something unique by blending a set of components such that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. That means that there will inevitably be batches that are a standard deviation or two from the baseline, but when you catch a great one it’s not something you are going to find elsewhere.
  6. As the official Surly Barrell Bourbon fan boy, I feel compared to share: https://thebourbonculture.com/whiskey-reviews/barrell-bourbon-batch-029-review/ I think the guy behind this blog has a pretty solid palate, or at least one that seems to be largely consistent/similar with mine. Looks like batch 29 is worth scooping up if you're wanting to catch Barrell at their best.
  7. Chelsea 2021-2022: You can’t spell Tuchel without U-C-L
  8. I have the Schlage Encode, which has been reliable and convenient: https://www.schlage.com/en/home/smart-locks/encode.html You can still use the key, but the keypad is awesome with my kids. Those fuckers would lose a key every week with how forgetful they are, so having a keypad that lets them in is super helpful. Reviews on it are good across the board.
  9. Why do we care about this twat waffle at this point? The less airtime he gets, the better.
  10. I don’t even really understand the current title. I mean, I gather that it’s intent is to remind everyone that we’re the best club in Europe and that they should get in line to kiss our ass. It just seems like there is a more elegant/clever way of saying that.
  11. Fuck yeah motherfuckers!!! We know who we are! We’re the champions of Europe!!!
  12. I’ve gotta spend the weekend in Dallas for a kids swim meet. I’m completely out of touch on the BBQ scene there. Where would this crowd send me?
  13. Anyone have plans to pick up the new Cask Strength bottle from Still Austin? Hoping they continue to put out different expressions. I’ve liked what I’ve had so far.
  14. Damn right. Barrell is delicious. I had my second date with Seagrass and I might be in love. That one is fan-fuckin-tastic.
  15. Don’t think we can, actually. It’s over priced for sure, but it’s most certainly not swill in my book. I quite like it.
  16. I thought the general belief was that Elmer has gotten increasingly younger due to how high demand has gotten. I was reading a comparison to Blanton’s somewhere that said at this point both are 5-7 years old. Full disclosure, the guy that takes care of our group pulled out an Elmer for us last week at a price of $55. We bought it, but there were more than a couple of guys openly asking if we’d be smarter selling it. We aren’t about to burn our supplier like that so we cracked it this weekend, but nobody was able to discern why it sells for 6x retail on the secondary.
  17. What’s the allure of Elmer? It’s essentially Blanton’s, no? I’m not looking to pick a fight or suggest that it’s not a fine dram, but it’s also not particularly unique. It’s a crushable low proof bourbon, and I can’t figure out why something like that is so sought after.
  18. There were 6 of us there and we wanted to bring some home for a few that were supposed to be there but could not make it. Our order was: 6lbs of brisket (3 sliced, 3 wrapped to go) 4 links of sausage (2 regular, 2 jalapeño) 2 lbs spare ribs 1 pound pork steak Half a chicken $277 and change.
  19. Snow’s this morning.
  20. Well don’t go doing anything rash and pouring it down the drain.
  21. Better than Hye Rye.
  22. Cracked the Laguna Madre last night. I'd say it climbed to the top of my GB rankings, though it's a tough value proposition both in absolute terms and relative to Balmorhea. It has a lot of the normal GB profile, but there are other things on top of it that make it a more complex whiskey. I'd rather have it over Balmorhea if money isn't involved, but I'd rather have a bottle of Balmorhea and $140 than a bottle of Laguna Madre. We also cracked open a bottle of Barrell Seagrass and I really really liked it. I wasn't quite sure what to expect after buying Armida and not really loving how heavily the casks influenced the bourbon, but they got it right with this one. The rye backbone is definitely there, but there are all kinds of other delicious things happening alongside of it.
  23. Not a bad evening
  24. No angst here. I don't hunt. I've got a spot where I get a reasonable number of allocated bottles at MSRP in exchange for funneling most of my business their way. I definitely don't get everything, but I get enough. If there is something specific I want, the secondary market always has it. If the cost is too much there, then I must not want it that much. There is also a shit load of really good stuff consistently available such that I don't need to fall back on having any one daily drinker or value bourbon in my collection. There is a happy medium between drinking the cheap stuff all the time and suffering from FOMO over not having every single unicorn out there.
  25. Even one bottle of Cigar Blend Batch 25 (which also uses batch numbers) at $97 would have been cool.
