  1. So Football Scoop is reporting that Saban was negotiating with coaches to join his staff less than 24hrs ago and lots of rumors on Bama boards that it may be health-related to Miss Terry...

How rigorously did the fanatically methodical Saban fulfill his role as Alabama head coach till the very end? Multiple sources with direct knowledge told FootballScoop that Saban had conducted numerous interviews for the Tide's open assistant coaching positions within the past 24 hours, including throughout the day on Wednesday.

Dont want to speculate too much, but I dont think Saban would be negotiating to bring people in yesterday and retiring today without one hell of a reason

Texas coach Steve Sarkisian: We'll include Sarkisian's name for the sole purpose of stating this: it wouldn't logically make much sense for Sarkisian to leave Texas. The Longhorns are surging and they have become a formidable program in the NIL space with a large, deep-pocketed group of donors. Sarkisian certainly impressed Alabama during his two-year stint as offensive coordinator, which included coaching Alabama to an Iron Bowl win in 2020 when Saban had COVID. But our feeling has been Sarkisian is among a very small group of current college head coaches who wouldn't make the move to Alabama. It's still worth a phone call, though.

Alabama football coaching search candidates: Who are the possibilities?

Alabama coaching search Nick Saban retires candidates

The Nick Saban era is over at Alabama.

Alabama's legendary coach retired Wednesday, ending his 17-season run in Tuscaloosa after six national titles for the Tide.

Alabama's first coaching search since 2006 now begins for athletics director Greg Byrne, president Stuart Bell and the university's board of trustees.

Who are the candidates to watch? Here is Bama 247's initial perspective:

Oregon coach Dan Lanning: The 37-year old has only been a head coach for two seasons, so Alabama would be taking a swing on his upside. He was an Alabama graduate assistant in 2015 and rose to prominence under Kirby Smart first as Georgia's outside linebackers coach in 2018 and then UGA's defensive coordinator from 2019-21. He knows the system that made Saban (and Smart) successful and led Oregon to a top-10 finish this season.

Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin: We'll include Kiffin on this list because he'll be widely discussed as a possible candidate. Kiffin has experience coaching in the SEC at Tennessee and Ole Miss, and has turned the Rebels into a top-15 team. But his three-year tenure as Alabama's offensive coordinator from 2014-16 ended abruptly and his unpredictable demeanor off the field would be a stark contrast to the buttoned-up Saban. Kiffin might badly want the job, but the question remains: how much will Alabama's trustees want him?

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney: A few years ago, it seemed like a natural fit for Swinney to one day replace Saban. After all, the Birmingham-area native played won a national championship for Alabama in 1992. Clemson has tried to protect itself with a larger buyout for Swinney leaving for Alabama, but that could be overcome financially. The question these days is whether Swinney's approach to NIL and the transfer portal is the right path for Alabama. Clemson has undeniably dropped off since the Tigers battled for supremacy last decade with Alabama, and there would be concerns about how Swinney would go about getting Alabama back on top, too. But it's probably too early to write this one off, and he remains one of the most successful coaches in modern college football.

Florida State coach Mike Norvell: The frustration was evident from Norvell after Florida State went undefeated, won the ACC and was left out of the College Football Playoff. The solution? If you can't beat them, join them. The SEC would offer ample opportunities for Norvell to get past the roadblocks posed by the ACC, and the 42-year old has engineered a remarkable turnaround for a Florida State program that seemed to be in shambles when he was hired four years ago. The Texas native has never coached in the SEC, though, and wouldn't have as deep of a track record as some other candidates.

Washington coach Kalen DeBoer: It might be a culture shock for a coach who has spent most of his career far from the SEC footprint, but DeBoer has an incredible 104-12 record as a head coach at Division II Sioux Falls, Fresno State and now Washington. Making the national championship with the Huskies in an era where the Big Ten and SEC have dominated recruiting is an accomplishment, and DeBoer has accordingly won several coach of the year awards this season. Would the 49-year old from South Dakota be the right fit in the deep south at Alabama?

To be clear for anyone following, I'm happy to just come out and say what I was told because it has since become public discussion on Twitter.

Fisher was calling agents and family of aggie players during the bowl break and asking, if he got the job at LSU, if they'd be interested in transferring in.

"The LSU job is taken, though?"

To which Fisher was indicating that Harbaugh was going to the NFL and that Kelly would be offered the job at UM. Kelly's not exactly meshing in Baton Rouge, although the ATM and Bama blow-ups aren't going to hurt his cause.

Fisher, clearly with some conversing with Sexton and possibly Woodward, thinks he'd be the guy at LSU and they could get him cheap.

Now, more recently, Michigan insiders are hammering the Sharone Moore to HC notion, so maybe we'll never get to see any of that deliciousness.

Regardless, while I do have friends, at least for the moment, at Bama, there wasn't any buzz coming from there about anything until today.

So how would the Michigan move for Kelly impact Bo moving to LSU... would we be willing to take him back if that happened?

  4. Funny enough, I would probably watch it just to see how bad those teams really are.

Might be more apt named the "Train wreck" Bowl, but how can it be any worse than some of those really bad 6-6 vs 6-6 bowl games?

Inaugural Irrelevant Bowl Announced For 2024 Celebrating Two Teams Suffering Through Dismal Seasons

Hall of Fame Promoter Roy Englebrecht Believes New Bowl Game Matching Up College Football’s Bottom Feeders Will Be Huge Hit Similar To “Mr. Irrelevant” Title

Newport Beach, Calif. (January 10, 2023) – With the bowl season now complete, it’s time to stop celebrating mediocrity and .500 teams winning games against other 6-6 teams. It’s time for the Irrelevant Bowl!

Newport Beach’s Roy Englebrecht, an innovator and Hall of Fame promoter, has come up with a concept that college football coaches, players, media and fans are sure to latch on to, just like they’ve done with the title of “Mr. Irrelevant – awarded at the end of the NFL Draft and celebrating the last player selected.

“No polls, no rankings, no controversy, just two winless or near winless teams looking for redemption and one elusive win,” said Englebrecht, who hopes to launch the inaugural Irrelevant Bowl in 2024. “Knowing that the NCAA has become more flexible with the number of team’s wins to qualify for a bowl, I will petition the NCAA asking them to grant a waiver in 2024 so that two teams would be eligible to play in the inaugural Irrelevant Bowl.”

It all started four decades earlier with the naming of the first “Mr. Irrelevant” – a title no college football player wanted. Dayton wide receiver Kelvin Kirk was the 487th pick in the 1976 NFL Draft and dubbed “Mr. Irrelevant” after being selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Yet what former NFL receiver Paul Salata began all those years ago has become a phenomenon for players who may have started at the bottom, but who were celebrated for making it to the big show.

If there had been an Irrelevant Bowl played this past December, it would have “featured” 2-10 Vanderbilt facing 1-11 Akron. The Irrelevant Bowl will provide six figure payouts to two teams, along with team travel, team loading lodging, and team meals in a host city to be determined. And should either of the last two teams picked pass on playing, the next lowest team would be invited.

To be considered as a host city for this monumental event, a city would place a bid in the first quarter of 2024 covering lodging and meals for the two teams, all stadium expenses, and a $1,000,000 site fee. The host city would retain all event revenue including ticket sales, concessions sales, and parking revenue.

  6. CW is going the rare top rated QB that absolutely has to be flawless in the interviews and psych evals to get picked 1/1 by the Bears. He has all of the check marks scouting wise on the field, but there will be a ton of questions about his psyche and how will he respond to the game as a job and how well he can lead his team to be more than just the sum of their parts. If not they can trade down and ride and die w Fields or pick up QB2/3/4 at #9 (or whatever pick they get for 1/1).

I think he is mentally much better suited for the pro game and will be a rear good qb that doesn’t quite live up the to extreme expectations of being the next Andrew Luck type instant high level starter.

has there ever been any actual clarity on the PK/Jimmy Lake stuff?

I would be all for exchanging Joseph for Lake.

That being said 1. Why would he walk from a AHC gig in the NFL with the Rams and 2. How does his exit at UW and the issues tied to it square with both the NCAA or UT compliance

  8. This is super complicated from an academics perspective. He left A&M essentially for conduct/academics and so I am guessing he probably didn’t accrue the expected academic progress at A&M. Then he takes theoretically a full course load at LSU. He then is going to transfer those credits back to A&M and clear A&Ms internal academic probation hurdles. All while coming back as a transfer under the eyes of the NCAA…

Not sure how he ends up eligible academically to play at all or based upon his previous behavior how he makes it through the off season and if he has to sit as a transfer to finally be eligible.

I hope the kid the best academically, but whoever is advising him really needs to hammer home how close he is to essentially only being able to play college ball after going and graduating a JUCO to reset his academic GPA and hours counter..

He can’t lean backwards two yards. His feet showed where he was and we shouldn’t need a straight line shot down the LOS to get that call right.

Why was the late hit on Quinn not reviewed for targeting?

    Because this isnt the B12....

I jest, but we got so conditioned that every play gets reviewed for targeting in the B12 we expect a review... That was all shoulder, late but all shoulder.

The one I am curious on is the hit on Ewers after the throw in which his head hit the turf. That is much more likely a late hit flag than the other was targeting.

LSU folks up until a few weeks ago weren’t even pining for the guy due to shitty performance the last part of the season. I think they were chasing him in part to continue some momentum on the recruiting trail. Perhaps he can help close Bussey for them as well.

Besides, LSU’s defense has got to be desperate for playmakers. Based on what CTJ has posted above we need to be thankful he’s going to a conference opponent.

That and after all the shit aggy has thrown at them the last 5 years or so, they absolutely want to make sure they can inflict maximum carnage on their roster and recruiting class. You can tell LSU is giggling like a drunk school girl knowing that they can continue to fuck with aggy with the clusterfuck that is their hiring of Melko has been.

  11. I think the no call on Pennix being over the line of scrimmage was the most egregious to me because it is supposed to be absolutely monitored by the line judge… I get the tendency to drift upfield post snap, but the guy on that side of the field was 4 yards up field with his body positioned to look up field and so there was no way he could have even attempted to make the call…

Beyond the lack of interior holding calls and one take down of Burke the OLine play by the UW OL was pretty solid in pass pro. There was 2 egregious holds on the two longer runs by the RG that I saw, but we got away with a few of that type in the running game.
