I've been using the internet since 1989 when my folks got compuserve. I've been on the internet way, way longer than you. I've been on all sorts of boards, I quite literally grew up alongside chan culture and all that shit, when stuff like something awful was the nexus of the internet and fark was actually a thing. The default mode of the internet for 30 fucking years has been aggressive irreverence, "being serious sucks," whyucare bullshit. Perhaps, get this, we're fucking tired of that shit that you seem to still find so funny? Perhaps, just perhaps, it's not outrage culture that has lead us to where we are, but rather this worship on "funny above all else"? Because, honestly, what you find funny isn't. The vast amount of humor on this site is cringe-ass 40 year old tough guy bullshit.
That's not what this site was or is. I explicitly said it's irreverence with the serious undertones which is specifically different from whatever collegehumor/4chan bullshit label you are trying to stick on surly. The vast majority of humor on this site isn't cringe-ass 4 year old tough guy bullshit, but there is plenty of that because it's a bunch of 35-55 year olds on the internet.

Heard, and I'll try to calm down a bit, but it's hard when a good chunk of this thread is people trying to distract from what happened at Texas by introducing what happened on the east or west coast, or just straight up applauding the action by abbott and hartzell.
Yeah but those were fun shenanigans. These shenanigans are cruel and tragic.
I think that's part of the issue, and maybe what @Thetexashammer and @Rex Kramer are somewhat alluding to, but the words escape them. A lot of this could be disagreement, but at least it was fun to read or participate in. It's turned into a slog of strong opinions and lines in the sand, which for threads like this one are really anti-surly idealistically. The CR topic for this is actually where that stuff should happen and traditionally has happened, because it's about positing what should happen to fix/rectify with public policy etc.

Lots of good, thoughtful takes here about Hartzell's role. Hartzell has a tough job, but he fucked up big time and it is clear he is full-on MAGA, MAGA-adjacent, or a lackey holding on to his job.
What happened at UT is clearly fascism in action, with an entire generation living in normalized fascism, a malignancy spreading throughout culture.
Sydney Carton wisely mentioned the "Milgram Studies" and is correct: Almost nothing has been learned from the famed studies. Give people the monopoly power of violence over other people, and they will deploy that violence, ruthlessly. Social media only amplifies the Milgram insights and desire for violence.
As we saw on the UT Campus: the police, DPS, law enforcement, and military are likely filled with Milgram-MAGA fascists -- ready, able, and more than willing to impose the GQP-MAGA regime.
this is a great post.

I mean it used to be so goofy that we had to use a [SERIOUS] label at the end of Shaggy/beginning of surly because people were goofing TOO much.

I'm not sure what's such a laughing matter? Like yeah it's from the Big Lebowski. Hawr hawr hawr! Do you think that's really appropriate in the face an honest to God fascist action on UT's campus at the behest of its own president?
Or you could frame that exact same thing in a way that wasn't outrage and was making fun of Hartzell being a fluffer of the fascists or something else that uses more than 1% of the brainpower you have and is just pooped out raw emotion on a keyboard.
I'm not saying it's funny, I'm saying the way surly in particular can and has framed stuff that is serious in the past is with a lot of irreverence with an underlying tone of seriousness and gravity that isn't lost on the posters.
-
yeah seriously, I'm about to start locking threads up like this. They don't actually do anything and aren't a positive outlet for anything.

This is a lot simpler than you are all making it. It has everything to do with personal integrity and nothing to do with anything else.
Hartzell cannot be trusted anymore with situations like this, he's the wrong person. He handled the DEI thing extremely poorly and now this. He isn't suited for the role. People who argue that the role is placating the BoR and whatnot, no it's not that's not the role, it's to protect and promote what's good for UT and it's faculty, staff and students as a premier education and research institution.
Also he literally called fucking riot police to a peaceful protest on his own campus. I was on campus, it was fucking insane and I didn't even get out to see it until around 5PM. Some of you have no idea and are very much armchairing this shit, I was on campus, it was an embarrassment how ridiculous the response. Some of you legitimately have not looked at the actual footage of what happened. It was literal fascism on the UT campus silencing a message that they didn't want.

So this is the UT thread for these protests, not the national thread of all protests.
The UT protest specifically doesn't have any of this shit @Frank Drebin so go put it in the right thread, also this isn't a thread for you to just bitch over and over about stuff it's a thread for discussing the event and the happenings of it, which include many government entities and organizations and people. That's not CR. Talking about the future policy creation and what needs to happen from here etc etc is all CR and should go in that thread which exists for the purposes of that.
11 hours ago, nineliveslost said:Everything is going to shit, including this site
This just isn't true, the site is a reflection of what is happening in society I'm not fucking causing protests on the UT campus and forcing the topic of Zionism, anti-semitism, genocide and muslim xenophobia on here.
7 hours ago, alincoln said:Just avoid this board and CR and the site is fine. It doesn't compare to Surly but it's still entertaining. Shaggy's problem is that too few posters provide way too much of the content.
If you guys were fucking funny about anything anymore then it would be fine, but instead everyone wants to get all fucking butthurt about shit instead of finding the funny commentary with a bit of a serious undertone. I do agree that there was some high brow intellectualism that used to go into some of the stuff like this. Now there's a bunch of outrage only which should stop.
Read your posts before posting, if it's an outrage post and no one is gonna laugh at it, why are you posting it? Are you actually going to change someone's mind? Is it just therapeutic for you? What exactly are you gaining and what is the community gaining from your contribution?
This thread can be fun as a thread, on a topic that is definitely not fun and it can make this subject approachable to people who it wouldn't normally be approachable to. Instead it's a dumpster fire piece of shit of a thread that's devolved into IF YOU DONT THINK LIKE ME YOU ARE A BAD HUMAN AND SUPPORT GENOCIDE AND RAPE AND GASSING THE JEWS.
Calm the fuck down, it's a god damned sports message board centered around UT. This happened at UT and it's fucking shitty and stupid, but it can also be something that is not just another outrage outlet like fox, cnn, politico, whatever bullshit.

not really. that CEO isn't subject to being crushed by MAGA state leadership. you can't say he's a public servant then use a private for profit example, they aren't even close to the same thing.
I'm simply stating we do not know what happened that led to this with respect to this singular decision.
As for Hartzell as a president, his leadership is certainly suspect I agree and to that point, I have the same questions. To what extent is UT getting squeezed by state politics in ways that make his decision making authority futile? To what extent is he being told on certain topics what he has to do or else? I think UT has much bigger issues to be concerned about than simply a president that may suck. I think the problems are much more dire than that.
You missed the point of the comparison. It's lack of accountability for the actual job instead of personal enrichment or benefit. He chose to personally benefit instead of doing his fucking job and will be rewarded for it by the board who are deranged Maga bootlicker fucks.

Jay Hartzell being in a tough spot is his job. He failed miserably to do a key part of his job. He has failed the students and he has failed the faculty. Anyone defending this is the same as defending reality detached CEOs and their exorbitant pay and destruction of product and innovation for the sake of shareholder value. UT is not a business it's a public institution focused on research and education.

Hartzell calling in the riot cops on his own student body because he didn't like their speech is beyond the fucking pale. He can repeat abbott's party line on his justification, but it's has nothing to do with what happened yesterday on campus.
It's unsurprising and predictable that so many people on this board are uncritically believing whatever their preferred authority figure tells them, but holy fucking shit.
Hartzell being confirmed by the Daily Texan (publication, not board) to have called in the jackboots
Hartzell fucked up big time.

I mean this is straight up because of Columbia and a bunch of shitheads on other campuses and an overreaction to keep that from happening. It’s not a nothingburger and it was completely fucked in its handling and Hartzel lost control of the university and what is important about this kind of thing. He allowed the university to become a political plaything.

I think it’s obvious what happened here and a clear overreaction on all fronts.
Pro Palestine demonstrations have been a thing in Austin for a while now since the conflict started.
The UT student body overreacted and jumped on a hype cycle because of the Columbia/USC/<insert other academic institution here> thing, many of which turned campuses into shitholes and are actually a problem. this isn’t up for debate. Tent camps and shanty towns aren’t safe for anyone and shouldn’t be allowed on campus under the guise of protest.
the UT leadership should have worked with the protest group to help them amplify their voices the best with help from the university and law enforcement to make sure things went well and according to plan. Instead they overreacted to the hype cycle and assumed that tent camps were going to happen, because it was more likely than it was 2 weeks ago for that to the the case.
the cops overreacted by being literal shitbags and not just letting the protest happen all day and keeping people from setting up camp or long term occupation. Arresting people is absolutely insane.
Hartzel fucked up and is in the middle of a political shitstorm. He underreacted and was too slow to act. He should have gone to the organizer in person on campus and talked to them in front of everyone to say what was and wasn’t gonna happen and if they didn’t listen he was going to have to call authorities. Instead he sat in his ivory tower and fucked the entire thing. His campus was militarized and there was more violence caused by the police than the students. His statement after was completely inappropriate and clearly not in the best interest for the student, faculty or institutional population.

This can honestly just merge into the general abbot thread.
-
Being pro Palestine is not being anti Israel. I do think that this was a poor judgement on all fronts.
Columbia getting on the news for the wrong things is not good for all the other protests. It’s like BLM riots vs BLM protests. It all turned bad once the riots happened one place because inevitably everyone thinks it devolves to riot.
UT students after getting not approved should have worked to get approval or put the shit on blast and do a PR campaign for free speech.
Texas Admin fucked up for not approving a protest that seemed fine.
State fucked up by sending in literally riot police.
Texas president fucked up because he did nothing when he was supposed to be leading.

They block off all the streets near the stadium that are essentially the arteries of town. It’ll be in your interest to walk if you want time to soak in the experience. If you get there around 8, it’ll be fairly easy, and you can disregard most of the walking issues.
If you know AA there’s neighborhoods that are close to the elementary school that you get dropped off in. Off the main arteries and in a black car they will do that. In an Uber you are correct.

While will they drop you off that far away? If I hired black car service for the day, would that work any differently?
You'll be fine. They don't drop off miles away lol.
