Currently reading.  I've known much about his life and mission in the many documentaries I've seen about the civil rights movement, but have never taken a deep dive.  He was truly an incredible man, and his disciplined commitment to nonviolent opposition is still inspiring.  And I know the older I get the less I'm aware of how many more years ago the Jim Crow era was still firmly established in American life.  But it still seems like only a short while ago in our nation's history that America was unabashedly shitting all over the Black population, backed by our legal institutions and elected leaders.
The writer doesn't hold back on his extra-marital affairs, which were more numerous than I had understood.  And it's amazing how brazen the FBI was at the time in obtaining information on those affairs through extensive wiretapping.  It's also a remarkable commentary of that time that the FBI shared with certain media outlets some of those tapes in which King was talking to his mistresses or to other men about his sexual exploits, and nobody in the press wanted to publish them.  Today, the media would be blasting that in lightening speed.
I'm about 70% through, and I'm surprised MLK made it to 1968.

I'm reading a biography of John D Rockefeller and discovered he greatly endowed the Spelman Seminary for Black Women in the 1880s. That's where Martin Luther King’s mother and grandmother studied.
  2. Walked around the Manassas battlefield this afternoon. Twas but 103 degrees but I did take a while to imagine the short-range artillery battle in July ‘61 at first Bull Run where they wailed on each other from a mere 300 yards. One can imagine the blood soaked earth.

  3. These idiots will tax it at 300% and use the money for "education" (They'll buy "Baby Billy's Bible Bonkers" games for their $10K/yr online private schools)

My daughter's friend group in Chicago has someone periodically bring it from Michigan because IL set their taxes…too high

  4. I used to live in Stone Oak many years ago as a young man. My regular commute took me past Cornerstone church where they would hold events dedicated to Israel. Occasionally, the fucking Prime Minister of Israel would show up to speak at the church.
A totally, ignored church that somehow was able to get Netanyahu to fly from Israel into San Antonio, Texas to give speeches.
John Hagee, the pastor of Cornerstone and a major influencer on "end of times" theology founded Christians United for Israel (CUFI). Hagee was also some insignificant rando that performed the closing prayer when the U.S. embassy that was moved to Jerusalem. A totally ignored national character.

CUFI has been involved in significant political events, including the opening of the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem in 2018 and the U.S. recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights. During Operation Protective Edge in 2014, CUFI brought pastors from every state to Israel. In 2024, following the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack, CUFI played a role in advancing the 21st Century Peace Through Strength Act, which provided emergency military aid to Israel.

Small world. I too passed Cornerstone while taking my kids to the best early childhood program in San Antonio, at the JCC. Was so happy when they moved it to NW Military.

  5. RTX (Tomahawks) NG (B2), Boeing (GBU-57) plus 200 other suppliers all stand to benefit, as does TX OG. Some of you might have noticed Midland’s own ASTS stock price doubled since Musk pissed off Trump, reducing the likelihood that Starlink gets to fire up their direct to cellular 5g Sat service which would incidentally cause mass interferance on Verizon, AT&T, and Vodaphone’s terrestrial cell service.

I was at SOF week in Tampa a few weeks back and I’m sure the drone war folks are just chomping at the bit to see what Iran does with the Strait so they can field test their systems.

IMO this was 100% a demo of what we could do to an uppity non-christian, theocracy who probably didn't actually have the bomb.

And it gives the cyberwarfighters some needed exercise.

I'm headed do DC for meetings tomorrow and this post is a bit of a thought exercise for client discussion.

In church this morning, during a sermon on Matthew 5:13-16 I tuned out and prayed for the Iranian people.

Politicians and dictators need enemies and it’s Iran’s turn in the barrel.

  6. Did I want to fuck around with a wet hole? A dirty, wet hole. That was the question.

I did. Scooped about 10 gallons of water and muck out. Got out the big boy tool, and started jackhammering away at that dirty dirty wet hole. Penetration was hard, but I was able to get about 8 inches deep. Hopefully such that if more rain somehow migrates down it will gather in one wet sport, rather than across the whole hole. Once I get down a bu5 in one spot, it's easier to widen.

I moved some spare plywood amd metal panels around. Hopefully that will help channel water away. Maybe one day I'll sort of French drain or trench around to better divert surface runoff. I really want to concrete all the way from the bottom up, and pour a good sloped pad. Really manage the water better. Might be fun to make it a little storage hut, with a trap door.

So how's the hole progressing? The Iran thread got me to thinking.

  7. William CowperBrann, although I don’t mean to defend him. He would have been just find with the horrible Waco lynching of Jesse Washington

Oh yeah, I know all about The Iconoclast. I've told this story before, but indulge me.

The woman is my stepmom, great grandaughter of James Harris. The man on the right is the great grandson of Judge Gerald. He was in my 2nd wedding and is one of my closest friends. He and his wife, and my dad and stepmom traveled the world together, lifelong friends.

One night while enjoying a fine Italian dinner I asked Gerald what he had been doing, and he replied “well, I was in Waco doing some research as my ancestor was in a gunfight with a newspaperman named Harris.” my stepmom paled and said “ wait, my ancestor was killed by a judge in Waco”

I stood up and said “Yall need to hug this out right this minute”

All because then president of Baylor, Rufus Burleson, took in an orphan who ended up pregnant.

Tl;Dr if the Baptists aren't actively involved in a scandal, just wait a bit and it'll happen.

  8. Much like the fictional Derry, Maine, there is an ancient and powerful evil under the surface of Waco, Texas. Occasionally it bubbles up and manifests in the physical world- a gunning down of an editorialist, a murder by a spirit group at halftime of a Baylor/A&M game, Branch Davidians, Dotson murder, Baylor football rapes, Twin Peaks shoot out,…
I don’t know how the story of Chip and Joanna Gaines ends, but it will be horrific.

    Well said about Waco.
    Which editorialist?
  9. It is a holiday celebrating liberty.
    I'm in.

I do get a kick out of co-workers' look of astonishment when told the story about the situation from which it originated.  A lot of folks, even Texans, have not a clue.  Granted, the situation is not something to be proud of- it was 2 freaking months after the War ended, I do like what the holiday represents today.

If you really want to freak them out, tell them Texans went to war twice to preserve slavery. The first time after Mexico outlawed it on September 15, 1929.

My family has some skeletons in the genealogical closet.
