I predict heavy financial losses over the song. I bet the majority are in total agreement with every demand except BLM and the eyes. And this is going to cause a reckoning. I hope that I am wrong.
I've got a real problem with Littlefield. Yes he was a Confederate (and I don't concede that should be a disqualifier because it excludes 99.9% of all white southerners who were 12 and up in 1860), but he was honored because he was perhaps the biggest benefactor the school ever had. Why should anyone support a school that, based on standards of 100 years later, spits on your legacy?
And the others need to be evaluated with the same thought process. RLM looks like a sure change. But what about Painter, a premier geneticist (apparently in the world), who was also president during the fight over integration? Did he merely support the state's position or was he more like a Governor Wallace in Alabama?
The concerns need to be addressed, but also fleshed out. Education goes both ways.

I think the optics just look better. It feels like Texas (CDC/Hartzell) are in pursuit of perfection vs a good start.
There is also zero way to enforce the crowd themselves yelling "Gator Bait" but it certainly sounds good to not have cheerleaders start the cheer themselves.
Texas needs to move faster here, start announcing some of the changes the players have requested and get moving.
Wrong. Fast is wrong.
Immediate discussion is right. Get the facts. Get the whole story. No shoot from the hip decisions.
Remember when Houston named its international terminal after Mickey Leland just after he died, in violation of policy to wait 2 years before naming things after people? He had nothing to do with helping the airport and he died IN A PLANE CRASH!!!! Everyone wants to be reminded of plane crashes when they head to the airport.

I will say one thing, I've learned more about racism and racist history than I ever thought I could. Damn there's some crazy stuff in the past(and now).
Yes, but if you believe everything you read, you are believing a lot of fiction. Be skeptical of stuff (on any side) that comes out at a time like this.

Orangebloods now has a bunch of old whitey's so pissed they are clammoring to do away with UT athletics or scholarship athletics as a whole One guy even has the idea that "all players should have same academic standards" and be "parents should be forced to pay for the players tutoring" And you wonder why our players have some of these attitudes. Seriously, the Boomers (at least many of them) just need to fucking die off already.
That's pretty disgusting of you even by Surly standards. Very unifying of you also. America is filled with hateful bleeding hear idiots.

It's almost like Gundy drew attention to himself by wearing an OAN shirt. Shit from your past pops up when you're an idiot.
He's out fishing with friends. Mistake was allowing the picture.

Holy shit! SEC is taking on the most sacred of cows.
That's a matter for the people of Mississippi. And my understanding is that while it didn't become an official flag until the 1890s, it was an unofficial flag before the Civil War, unlike Georgia's old flag which was of 1950s origin.

All White Privilege means is you don't have to put up with the bullshit people who aren't white have to put up with. It doesn't mean your life doesn't suck ass for other reasons. You might have gone to OU for example.
What it means is people who believe it are prejudiced and lump all people in a group based on skin color, rather than as individuals.
There are lots of aholes around. Everybody experiences their bullshit. Some white people have more than average to face. Some Black people have less than average to face.
Privilege in this country is primarily based on wealth, not skin color. And yes, Blacks on average have less wealth. That doesn't mean all whites have privilege and all Blacks don't.

Can you explain why it is that you think everyone disagreeing with you on this thread is white? Is it because this board is heavily populated by college graduates or is it something less concerning like a simple assumption that without evidence to the contrary you just assume everyone looks like you?
Maybe he thinks Black people are more intelligent on average than white liberals.

Is this where you seriously try to argue that being white in America doesn't come with privileges not afforded minorities?
Pretty hard to think there is anyone more privileged in America than Obama's daughters. Are you seriously going to argue than someone who lives in a shack in the hills of Eastern Kentucky has privileges over the two Obama kids?

Did you leave out the part about him being a slave owner prior to his military service on purpose or by accident?
I guess you just missed the point entirely. He is honored for what he did for the school.
George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were slave owners too. So was Ulysses S. Grant (his wife technically owned them).

Ton of OSU players now saying on twitter that those were not their demands. Doug "let me offer the white man's perspective" Gottlieb may have gotten this one wrong, which is not surprising. Reading Chuba's statement from earlier today, which was incredibly well thought out and impressive, it should have been clear that the players' demands were not going to be this shallow.
I do think Gundy had a no du-rag rule, which is pretty stupid.
Somebody believed fake twitters. What a surprise.

They basically mean "shut up and dribble". They don't want to hear what these athletes say on any relevant subject. They just want to turn on their tv and watch them entertain and dance for them and that's it. They won't admit but this is how many view athletes. Any time they speak their mind, they get so much backlash and it's usually from a certain demographic who is giving the most flack. You also have all these double standards. Laura Ingram tells Lebron to shut up and dribble since his message goes against her network's yet Drew Brees say something that aligns with her network and she said he has a right to say what he wants to say. It's fucking ridiculous.
The curtain is slowly being uncovered and exposing a lot of people. I support all these athletes taking a stand, especially college athletes. The NCAA has set up a system to fuck them for so long and they are tired of dealing with it and sitting on their hands. I hope they wreck havoc on them all.
Duh. Its entertainment. That's how I feel about movies and TV. If I want to be preached to, I go to church. If I want to listen to politics, I watch news.
Nobody really cares what they do or say off the field.
LeBron is an idiot who gets on his knees to China and then preaches to other people. He's a whore for China so why should anybody listen to him on morality.
A bunch of HS dropout actors and hormone and steroid filled 18-22 year old males are who we all should be listening to for good advice.

Yeah, that was the point. According to that poster, Hubbard should have handled things differently because the way he handled things could have adversely affected Gundy's future career. Meanwhile Gundy has repeatedly made decisions that neglect any concern for Hubbard's future career.
I mean I thought that was obvious, but no sweat off my back to spell it out.
Hubbard could have wrecked team unity, messing up the team. He also put a mark by his own name as an immature young man who lobs grenades without thinking.

You just can't have an opposing view of it without getting shamed. Iv'e given up on the idea that there is much nuance on here. Any opposing view you have against the players will be shit on here. Even if you bring up good counter arguments the mob is waiting for you to say something against the narrative so they can show you how "woke" they are. It's all about having the moral high ground so they don't have to take on the sins of their ancestors and put it on anyone who disagrees with them. That being said I really don't care anymore. They can change whatever they want and my opinion on it isn't going to matter anyway. Still love the players and I hope they have a successful season. Always will be a longhorn for life. Hook Em.
Nuance!? You're on Surlyhorns, which seems to be the ornery progeny of Shaggy!

It’s very telling how angry some people get when a viewpoint they’re uncomfortable with is shared. These athletes and the entire black community at UT just want to tell you about their struggles, and they wanted to be treated as true equals in every aspect of life. The condescension and arrogance toward them by some in this fan base is incredibly disappointing.
Actually, you are the one being intolerant, condescending and arrogant.
You have trouble with us thinking some of these ideas are ridiculous, just because you don't. (and some of the ideas are very good).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_W._Littlefield
Quick and dirty-Wiki-note that while Wiki points out that he definitely was an unrepentant Southerner, it doesn't mention the idea behind the statues, which was the reuniting of the North and South, not that you could tell that theme from the way it eventually got set up.
"...In 1911, Governor Oscar Branch Colquitt appointed Littlefield as a regent of the University of Texas. His largess to the school in the following nine years became legendary.
Littlefield was a politically active individual but never sought office himself. Himself a teetotaler, he opposed prohibition. He gave and bequeathed some $3 million to UT — more than any other individual during the first fifty years of the existence of the university. Littlefield's gifts preceded the larger ones which came later from numerous oil philanthropists. By virtue of his philanthropy, Littlefield's name is visibly entwined with many aspects of UT life. He believed that the UT textbooks were too Northern-focused; so in 1914, he established the "Littlefield Fund for Southern History" to amass the archival sources which the historian Eugene C. Barker told him were needed to obtain a more accurate writing of history. Many Southern-themed books in circulation at university libraries today are stamped with Littlefield's name as a result. In 1917, when Governor James E. Ferguson vetoed appropriations for UT in the state budget, Littlefield offered to fund its operations for the biennial period from his personal funds.
Littlefield paid for a prominent and well-recognized fountain on campus, the Littlefield Fountain, which was established as a war memorial. He also bankrolled the construction of one of the university's dorms, named for his wife. He stipulated that this dormitory be reserved specifically for freshman women. He commissioned statues of Confederate generals, including Robert E. Lee. These were taken down in August, 2017, by the university.[1]
He willed his residence, the Littlefield House, to the university. The structure is now used for offices and special events...."

Yes, God help a hypothetical football coach who, as a high profile individual, decides to make an overt political statement that he knows will piss off the majority of his roster, the players he is recruting, and the student body of the school he coaches at, as well as the majority of alumni for any school outside SECSECSEC country.
The first amendment establishes protection of the freedom of speech from restriction by the state. It means fuck all when it comes to blowback from your fellow citizens. Freedom of speech is not freedom from reaction, criticism, or consequences. So in the same way NFL fans were within their rights to burn jerseys and curse Kaepernick's name, and teams were even within their rights to not sign him due to his actions, this hypothetical football coach would be very much inviting whatever criticism came his way after making a conscious decision to make a political statement.
Take your victim complex back to texags.
Let's be real. Most people don't know OAN exists.

Typically dumb responses here from some of the usual suspects.
Any fan base should be upset at their head coach if he wears any politically charged shirt out and about town. Why the hell can't he just wear an Oklahoma State shirt, a Nike shirt, or something general and bland? It's just dumb.
I'd think it's a dumb move if I saw Herman or any Texas coach wearing anything controversial at any time. Tom Herman has given video interviews about a highly charged topic right now, but regardless of his stance on the issue(s) he has been wearing a Texas Longhorn shirt in each one. For the march to the Capitol it was a black shirt, but it was a Longhorn shirt with a Longhorn logo and that's it.
It's not very difficult.
Gundy is older than 21. He's from an era where Americans didn't lose their job for their TV viewership.
America has flat out gone nuts and incredibly intolerant.

I don't recall Gundy wearing that shirt on the sideline or insisting that his players watch OAN if they want to play.

There's a Civil War board???
No, I"ve read the current state flag was based on a design popular in the 1840s. The battle flag may have been influenced by Mississippi's old unofficial flag.
