Agree but this years WR draft class is deep as fuck

Yes.  He was 2nd team in the Big 12 behind 4 Belitnikoff finalists.  He, assuming he stayed healthy, probably makes up for the lost year of earnings pretty quick.

But then he gets paid now, not a year from now.  He's probably ready.

After Monday I could argue for:

    1. Clemson

    2. Notre Dame

    3. Alabama

    4. ousux

    5. OSU

    6. Florida

    7. LSU

    8. Texas

    9. Georgia

    10. WSU

I hate to do it, but ND schedule was pretty good, and the OSU should not get a pass for no playoff. Don't think you cannot put Georgia above Texas when Texas won "31-14."

Can you put Texas above West Virginia?  Or Oklahoma St.?  Georgia was more consistent and they did beat Florida and Kentucky easily.  Only Clemson stayed on the field with Alabama other than Georgia.  Notre Dame just wasn't in the same class as Clemson and they had their Ball ST. game (24-16 over 4-8 MAC team).  Alabama lost by 4 TDs, but looked like they belonged in the game.  I put ND 5, UGA 6 and LSU 7 for more season long consistency.  UT 8.

Well, that's probably largely because they beat Penn State in the bowl, which actually is impressive when you remember that Penn State had that impressive win over no one.

And they finished 2nd in the SEC East and manhandled Florida in Gainesville who for no justifiable reasons got ranked ahead of both Kentucky and Georgia.

There are about 8 computer polls in the Massey composite that still have Alabama #1.  I looked at a couple of them.  Both had 10 SEC teams in the top 20.  Both had Missouri at #11 and Miss. St. at #14.  South Carolina was #16 in one and #18 in the other (UVA 28, USCe 0).  Both had Auburn at #19 or #20.

Nevermind where they are in the poll, can anyone tell me why LSU is ranked above the Gata?

Same record, Head to head win, and a larger win against a higher ranked opponent in the bowl game...

    tl/dr  polls suck

The question is why is Florida in the top 10?  The answer is they won big against a vastly overrated Michigan.

They finished 3rd in the SEC East.  Got stomped at home by Kentucky and Missouri.  Got stomped in Jacksonville by Georgia.  Their only ranked wins were by 8 at home vs. LSU and Michigan.  They were 2 games behind Georgia in the SEC East with 7 games the same and an equivalent 8th opponent (UGA beat Auburn big, Florida squeaked by MSU).  Georgia won much bigger (or won when FL lost) against 5 of those 7 and won by the same margin vs. TN.  The only advantage for FL was the LSU game.  Georgia played at LSU while FL won at home.

LSU's losses were by 2 in 7,000 overtimes vs. aggy, by 29 to Alabama and that 8 point loss to FL.  They did beat Georgia as well as UCF among ranked teams.

If they were to do actual analysis, they'd have to admit that Tua and Fromm aren't getting good coaching in identifying defenses.  And the only reason they looked good previously was that they weren't being challenged by anyone good at disguising blitzes and coverage in conference play or their soft non-conf schedule.

When forced to win the game against defenses who could disguise their pass D, the top QBs in the SEC flopped.  Much easier to turn on a single player (and ignore the other prime example) than to admit that there is a systemic problem that starts with recruiting but extends to coaching, scheduling policies and the pace of change outside the SEC.

Tua lost the Heisman when he had to be bailed out against UGA.  He was 10-25 with 2 INTs.

This is the best offensive Bama team of their run, but far from their best defensive team. Not sure what other people have been watching.

I heard it a lot this year that it might be the best Bama team ever, but I didn't see it.  Their defense lost a lot from last year.  They were vulnerable as Clemson (and OU after the 1st quarter) showed.  SEC koolaid?  The SEC was much weaker than normal in the middle so they made Alabama look good.

He was definitely off when Foster nailed him.

You could tell at halftime Smart was getting desperate.  Instead of throwing 20 yard passes to warm up, Fromm was throwing 40 yard passes.  It was obvious they were going to try to throw deep a lot to open up the running lanes.  I wonder if our coaches noted that.  I sure did.

Not talking about rankings - talking about are there 5 teams you would take over the team that beat UGA on a neutral site? I'm not sure there are.

For Texas with the "A" game yes.  But the margin between win and loss is narrower for Texas than some of the others.  If we brought our B game to the Sugar and Georgia played their B, we lose.  We don't have the depth and talent of Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame, Ohio St. or even OU.  Or Georgia.  With our "A" game we can play with anyone, but if we are a little off, well that's why we lost 4 games.

Yeah, Mangino was a great coach (and a shitty person, pun intended) but he also got extremely lucky in 2007 with how down the South was that year. And they still didn't have to play down Texas or Oklahoma squads but only benefited from them not taking high bowl slots.

Not to take anything away from that magical Jayhawk season and the greatest Border War game of all time, just that to me if Miles wants to be as good as Mangino at Kansas the goal should be multiple 9 win seasons and Top 15 finishes.

Kansas was top 10 in 1994 also when the Big 8 was really good.  OU was down, but NU and CU were at peak.

This is kinda what I’m talking about. Omenihu was good this year. He’s nowhere near the level of Robison, Orakpo, Kindle or Okafor. If you want to make the playoffs, upgrade the talent on each line. We will not lose much with him gone and we will improve with Hager being gone.

Hager was DL only because we were so thin there.  He was out of position.  Should have been playing linebacker.  We really need depth there.

I don't think we're going to have enough depth on both lines to get through the schedule unbeaten or with one loss. 9 regular season wins and a B12 CCG appearance should be the floor though. We'll see, should be fun.

Agreed.  Look at the recruiting.  We were around #20 Mack's last year with a small class (which Strong mostly ran off).  Strong was a #25 or so, then a #9 based on 3 big name Florida players, two of which never showed up for the first day of class, then a #25 or so.  We had one good class by Hermann.  Next year we will have a 2nd.  So our depth will be very young.

Its possible.  We could get lucky and avoid injuries.  It could be an odd year like this year where there aren't a lot of teams at the top tier.  Its like Alabama, Clemson and a bunch of 3 and 4 loss teams and Notre Dame who would have had 3 or 4 losses if their opponents didn't all seem to be down this year (USC, FSU, etc.).

But the odds are we'll lose one or two or three and not get in the playoffs.  2020 could be a very good year though.

They just lost most of their offense.  Nauta, Hardman and Ridley receivers declared and Sophomore Hollyfield declared.  With Godwin a Sr., they lost 4 of their 5 receivers with significant catches and their #2 yardage (and IMO best) RB.  So there was definitely some mercenary.  None of those people are 1st rounders.

I think you could make an argument that it has to do with the mercenaries they’ve brought into the program. When you’re commitment to the school is driven by cash, I don’t think there is much in the way of a bond you share with your teammates that helps you overcome adversity. You’re all there because you were paid to be there. I think there has to be something more substantial than that. I felt the same way watching those Ole Miss teams.

Pretty sure I read something from Smart saying his team was fired up and looking forward to facing Texas in the Sugar Bowl in the post game interviews, and got  beat in nearly every facet of the game. I remember that because I thought that was solid of him. Don’t ask for a link though, paraphrasing from (at that time) a potentially liquid aftermath memory.

He did say something to that effect.

I saw that too.  Pretty much textbook.  Not sure how they "missed" it.

Pac 12 referees.  Worst in college football.

Couldn't even figure out what to do with those 3 penalties for 5 minutes.  Were they getting OT pay for that last minute of the game?

You live here among those Oakley-wearing, mouthbreathing fucksticks for 25 years.  That will do the trick.

I've been in Atlanta for 10 years.  Never seen them quite so cocky as they were before the Sugar Bowl.  Maybe they got a little full of themselves beating Alabama twice for 3.5 quarters.

jesus christ.  I just heard him say, "from my sources, I know guys on staff there, it's not the coaches fault.  They did everything they could to motivate the players".  He sort of pulled this card (knowing people/having played in the SEC) before the game.  That he "having played" knows what it takes and understands the "difference in physicality" when presented evidence contrary to his points.  It's always, "well I played so I understand".  Hard to argue with that shit so I'm not in that room talking....yet.

Show that quote from the Texas linebackers someone posted above.

Just rewatched for the third time, first time to watch halfass sober.  Joseph Ossai played a hell of a game.  We need to quit running the fucking option.... hasn’t worked all year.  Substitute it with the LJH screen pass for 10 yards and then let the O-line push him for another 10, that one does not suck.

Kept them honest.  Good change of pace.

Why is Alabama so good then?

Saban keeps his players focused on their assignments.  He keeps them even keel.  Smart isn't as good with that.  He has an assistant hold his belt to keep him from running on the field and getting a penalty.  UGA was pretty inconsistent under Richt.  Its still somewhat so under Smart.  They just aren't so inconsistent as to lose to the bad teams anymore.  Also this UGA team lost a lot and is pretty young.  Lots of talent, but young.  They may finally dethrone Alabama next year if he can keep them from being so cocky.

If you wish to enjoy listening to the Georgia Bulldog radio broadcasters as the Texas Longhorn offense drove 75 yards in 10 plays on the opening possession,  fast forward to 4:45:00, as the link won't permit me to do it for you.  Scott Howard is handling play-by-play. Eric Zeier is the analyst and Chuck Dowdle is the sideline reporter.

    It's pretty glorious.

Scott Howard is doing the play-by-play, is shocked at how rapidly Texas is driving it down the field in up tempo pace.  Along the way, he has some classic lines like when he describes Ingram as a "reserve RB freshman from Carthage, Texas" at 4:49:00

Eric Zeier is most sober about what Texas is doing to their defense on the drive.

After we score, they are on their heels, but aware that it is happening to them and it is a bad thing at 4:52:00

Zeier:  "Boy that was a clinic there by the Texas offense. Just moving down the field doing whatever they wanted to do throwing the football they were able to get the dogs pretty good there defensively against the run in that series but Ehlinger and these big receivers are having their way with Georgia."

    Enjoy!

Heard them doing a little of their live show in the Hilton the night before.  "Georgia will run at will on Texas."  "Just need to slow down the big receivers a little."  I was thinking they hadn't actually seen Texas play.  This UT could shut down the run when they needed to.

My wife was showing me all the trash talk about how they were going to run all over Texas and were saying the Big 12 had no defense.  I recognized the tone from UT in the 70s and 80s during the Akers bowl losing streaks.  Game went just like I expected.  Texas smacked them in the mouth and they didn't know what hit them.  Players were saying the right things in public, but the arrogance from the fan base had to infect them.  They were entitled and thought just because they had that SEC patch on their sleeve and had played Bama toe to toe twice they would walk over anyone else.
