  1. https://www.mercurynews.com/2022/08/03/former-utah-ad-says-no-reason-to-jump-into-big-12-unless-the-goal-is-to-destroy-the-pac-12/ "...Asked specifically about the Utah administration’s preference, Hill offered: “They all want to stay. They love the schools they’re associated with and the areas they recruit and play. Utah has a lot of alumni in the Bay Area. There aren’t alumni in Waco. Those things matter.” Nor does Hill believe it’s essential for Utah to partner with rival Brigham Young, which is set to enter the Big 12 next year. “They just need to play each other,” he said. “Do they need to be in the same league to do that? Maybe, but maybe not.” Hill believes football should be treated as a separate business within college sports and will eventually feature a 48-team upper division. That bifurcation could happen in the next few years — or not for a decade. Unless the Big Ten or SEC come calling, the 36 schools remaining in the Pac-12, Big 12 and ACC must recalibrate their strategy and beware of lifeboats that aren’t as sturdy as they appear. “Their market is their market,” Hill said, referring to the media rights value held by any given school. “Arizona’s worth in the Big 12 is the same as it is in the Pac-12. The finances of moving won’t help anybody. “What difference does it make if you’re getting $35 million a year in the Pac-12 versus $40 million a year in the Big 12? Either way, it’s not going to move the dial for you. “The only benefit from switching is to destroy the other league.” Hill isn’t convinced the Pac-12 must expand following the departures of USC and UCLA in 2024. The schools currently in the Big 12 could be difficult to poach because of the league’s bylaws, which feature a 99-year commitment...."
  2. That's one of the reasons playoff expansion is important.
  3. yet you are here posting repeatedly on a Texas board?
  4. Leach gave up. You could see it in his demeanor on the sideline.
  5. After 2008 his giving up vs. OU and then marking us down in the polls and you are still going to defend him?
  6. Well its not as bad as basketball when you have one and dones. Its only 5 to 15 transferring out of 85. You can have almost the whole team change in basketball. I grew up in Lexington and am still a UK fan, but its hard to keep track or develop attachment to the UK team now. Don't forget Fiesta.
  7. You can't be sympathetic about a fan base that wastes good tortillas throwing them on the field.
  8. They're adults. They are getting forms of compensation now. Let them make decisions instead of shackling them. The NCAA really can't justify this rule only for the 5 revenue sports. No such limitation exists in the other 20 or so sports. The NCAA until a couple of years ago put transfer limitations on walk-ons!!! Its not about the athletes at all.
  9. Don't come on this board defending one of the games biggest jackasses-Mike Leach. You are conveniently leaving out the accusations he told the guy he didn't have a concussion.
  10. Almost no starters at a winning program will transfer.
  11. Then why did the Pac 12 join an alliance and ignore the Big 12? Reality is that it doesn't matter if you have 2 or 3 votes. SEC and Big 10 can veto if they agree.
  12. He needs to work on his years a little. But in substance +
  13. No. CU was going. Minnesota and Nebraska have played each other a lot over the years.
  14. CU was leaving and they didn't play OU every year (that could have been remedied). KSU, KU, ISU and Mizzou did nothing for them. Wisconsin and Minnesota are better rivals than those 4.
  15. I think the only thing that could have held the Big 12 together would be if somehow we got USC, UCLA, UW and 1 other to join the Big 12. We still would have been third, but we would have been a close third.
  16. That is from Pearlman's account of what happened. After NU left, Texas went all in trying to close the Pac 16, but backed out at the last moment after ESPN and Fox told them what the Big 12's next contract would be worth.
  17. They were all in a room in 2010. Texas president Powers said to NU president Pearlman that he would commit UT to staying if 11 of the 12 would stay (think everyone figured CU was gone). Nebraska wouldn't do it. Reality is that they had a better long term offer from the Big 10. Better money. Better rivalries than in the Big 12 North. Pearlman rushed out and called the Big 10 and said he needed a decision quick.
  18. Most fans from around the country say its ALL UT's fault because they listened to Tom Osborne bitter about 1-9 and aggy rants. And somehow NU and aggy are shining knights. There's a lot of bias against the state of Texas, not just UT, around the country and this is just one more avenue for them to vent. The only really valid complaint came from T. Boone Pickens. He said UT was like an elephant in a china shop. It didn't intend to do any harm, but it was an ELEPHANT in a china shop!
  19. We had no idea how much the network would be worth at the time we killed the Pac 16. As late as 4 months later (October 2010), reports were still that Fox would likely get it for $3 million a year. The Pac 16 just didn't make more money that the Big 12 would under their new contracts. So why do it? More travel. Having to deal with 16. And you could get pretty similar schedules simply by doing it ooc. As we have. We've scheduled Stanford, USC, UCLA, Cal.
  20. A while back I was looking at a listing of the final polls by year and noticed how the same teams were at the very top. Did an analysis going back to 1984 (when BYU won) and later extended it to 1968. There are 20 teams that have won 52 of the 54 AP titles in that period (Pitt and BYU the outliers) and have 148 of the 162 top 3 finishes in that period and 227 of the 270 top 5 finishes. Each has at least 5 top 5s (nobody else has more than 3) and at least 2 top 3 (only Tennessee has only 2-only TCU and Pitt outside the group have more than 1-each has 2). 18 of the 20 have a AP MNC and 1 of the others has a coaches poll MNC. Point being, Washington and Oregon are in that group of 20. Of course, UW is the one with a coaches MNC and Oregon is the one without an MNC. Colorado is also in that group of 20. Those 3 along with Tennessee are at the bottom of that group of 20, but are a clear step ahead of the rest of college football over that time frame. The others who aren't going to be in the Big 10 or SEC are Notre Dame, FSU, Clemson and Miami.
  21. Its Bleacher report. That's basically no different than quoting Greg Swaim (which I got all kind of negs for quoting him just for fun while saying he was always fos). My information was from an interview with the Nebraska president and Alcalde interviews with Deloss Dodds when the LHN first came out. I did still have a copy of the July/August 2011 Alcalde for some reason. Didn't see it on the website to link. Website only goes back to 2013. So from the hard copy, P. 36: "in 2006, with the Big 12 nearing the end of its television contract with ABC, Texas and Nebraska hired Prince (Chicago TV consultant, not the guy from Minnesota) to study the feasibility of an all-Big 12 network similar to the Big Ten Network, which the league had just launched in partnership with Fox. When that study indicated in fall 2007 that Texas would be better served going it alone,...." The interviews told how everyone but Texas and Nebraska were uninterested so that is why they funded the study. The Nebraska president claimed (I think in that Omaha News article about a year after the Big Ten move) that they were further along on their network than Texas.
  22. You don't have your facts straight on Nebraska & networks. The vote on the conference network was 10-2 against with Texas and Nebraska being for. Texas and Nebraska jointly funded a study since nobody else would participate. Nebraska, at the time they joined the Big 10, were closer to having a school network than Texas was.
  23. From the Dodd link above: "...That day signaled the end of the Pac-12 as we know it. The league will likely survive but only in some altered form. It could pluck suddenly attractive San Diego State (among others) and become the equivalent of a Mountain West Plus. It could also stay at 10 teams. One Pac-12 AD told CBS Sports that's "the best and only option...."" Based on that Baylor guy's analysis, SDSU is not that attractive. And you know they won't take Boise. I guess the commissioner is right the Big 12 won't take a Pac 12 school. There is no Pac 12. Its a Pac 10 now.
  24. The Big 12 was Dodds baby. He and the OU AD created the conference. He was very much for saving it.
  25. I'd blame Tom Osborne far more than the institution itself.
