I'd like to see Thompson get a few deep targets early this year. If only to find out if he can get the separation we all assume he can, then actually track and catch the ball. If those things happen, he alone will represent a key upgrade over 2022. Anything deep from Neyor and/or the true freshmen likewise would have us in great shape, but I still want to see what Thompson can do.

If Thompson was displaying those traits in practice I think we would have seen him get that opportunity on the field.

Yeah Thompson is a raw catch & run WR who played TX H.S. FB at the 3A level. I've never expected him to be go-to deep threat WR early in his career & the UT fans online who did aren't being realistic at all.

Bobby (IT) confirms that Texas does indeed have interest in the 5'11" USC WR Gary Bryant Jr now in the portal.  Bryant won't be graduating until May so will not be transferring until the summer.  Bryant was described as having average speed but is a precise route runner with good hands and the ability to make the tough catch, who after a very good 2021, fell out of favor with Riley and fell down the depth chart with the additions of Jordan Addison and Mario Williams.

Bryant still has three seasons of eligibility

According to his 247 page, Bryant ran a verified 4.46 40-yard dash at the 2019 Opening regional event.

Hope he has long arms at 5'11" if they want length and cna stretch the field

Nahlin had previously said that Bryant isn't 'that' guy.  He said ideally they would have liked two WRs out of the portal and one of them would have been a longer guy who could stretch the field.  Bryant would be an add as a solid all-around WR.

I was about to poo-poo Bryant as a portal take becuz I look at him strictly as a back-up to the guys UT was waiting on, but after looking at his 247 rankings, verified times, & scouting report on his 247 page, he's definitely a take. No guarantee he end up at UT becuz there will definitely be competition.

It’s pretty funny to see how in the dark/behind the 9.95ers are when it comes to coaching carousel stuff. Lots of info being reported days after it happens.

This isn’t like when Anwar was being spoon-fed info by Herman and his staff.

It's amazing to me that Chip Brown/Horns247, Anwar/OB, & TFB have very little to report on this WR coaching search. We're getting our info exclusively from Bobby Burton at IT.

SMH. That last paragraph just makes me disappointed even morethat UT missed the boat on Emmett Jones.

"Was never interested through multiple hiring cycles" is a bit different than "missed the boat"

Is that true? It just seemed like UT ended up choosing some else.

Emmett Jones is such a phenomenal WR coach that he’s gone from Tech, then to Kansas, and back to Tech before joining the Cryptkeeper’s shitastic staff.

    Fuck Emmett Jones.

LOL. How do you feel about Malcolm Kelly? Kelly & Jones are the 2 names that always come up these last 4 times that UT is seaeching for a WR coach.

Hate to break up all this punter talk - but this is fun:

He's so massive. Our potential size in 1-2 years will be insane. Reminds me of those ginormous lines in the SEC and the ones Oklahoma used to have.

When you said the OLs that OU used to have are you talking about during the 2000's during prime Bob Stoops or under Lincoln Riley?

Filani would be an awful hire. He has shown nothing whatsoever at Tech or WSU to support the idea he can actually develop or coach the position well. He isn't well liked on a personal level either. He was supposedly a part of why two of the top three wideouts at WSU, both two-year starters (Ollie and Stribling), hit the portal. People around Tech do not speak well of him on a personal level either and anyone you ask will talk about how much better the position played once Emmet Jones replaced him.

IMO portal window two going to be nothing but guys beat out during spring and occasional true freshmen early enrollee who isn't happy

Yeah I felt that way last year about the portal.

There was so much talk about Damieon George when he entered the portal, I assumed that he had already committed somewhere a long time ago.

IMO UT should only use scholarships on special teams specialists if they're good experienced starters from the portal/walk-on already on the roster. Unexpereinced special teams specialists from High School or portal should always be PWOs.

Phil Dawson, Justin Tucker, and Dicker say hi.  You should take a top tier scholarship kicker every 3 years or so.

I like the way Mack Brown handled it at UT after being burned by scholarship special teams specialists early on during his UT tenure. He would have big walk-on tryouts for special teams specialists every year & choose the best to be on the team. When those guys established themselves as good depedable starters, Mack would give them scholarships.

Can someone please explain what "controlling your position" means? Is that like, "Shut the fuck up Worthy and run 3 extra sprints!" Or, "Ya'll motherfuckers ain't transferring and stop talking about that shit!" Or something more Orwellian?

    image.gif.cccb7ddc520b3c16f602f8f76158e011.gif

LOL if that's the case, maybe Sark should rehire Tom Herman's 1st UT WR coach Drew Mehringer. IIRC that was what he known for.

It's almost like one or both sides isn't interested or something

Well Malcolm Kelly did turn down the WR coaching job from his Alma Mater OU last month or so. So it wouldn't be a surprise if he's not interested in the UT WR coaching job either.

Good for him. I certainly wasn't expecting him to land at a program of that caliber - particularly since LSU has plus athletes and Ovie appeared to be somewhat limited physically while at Texas.

    Thoughts from the LSU side:

    Quote

LSU DE Zavier Carter has entered his name into the transfer portal. LSU has also announced a transfer addition by signing former Texas DE Ovie Oghoufo. Matt Moscona react to the news from both and explains why he believes LSU wins in the portal swap.

Plugged in TCU poster on 247 said Jordan Hudson is entering the portal.

Caught 14 balls this season. Not sure what expectations were but that seems like reasonable production given the veteran nature of that team.

Nahlin was adamant yesterday in the IT state of the program video that UT was going to get a good WR in the portal. Earlier today I was assuming he talking about AD Mitchell, but maybe he was talking about Jordan Hudson.
