He's actually an unquantifiable tweener. He was only listed as a 3 star because he's too big and slow for a traditional safety, and too light and fast for a traditional linebacker, which plants him squarely in the category of guys who can absolute fuck shit up in Orlando's defensive scheme. Losing him to Auburn is not the end of the world, but it's not "no big deal" either, because he's exactly the kind of player we need to be getting long-term. Is he replaceable? Yes, more than likely. But it would have been better to have gotten him than not.

What position does he play in Todd Orlando's defense?

Joe Cook covered Todd Orlando's comments at the recent Texas High School Football Coaches Association meeting and they were revealing about how he feels about his defense and how it will be deployed. They are also very useful for assuaging sporadic fits of board paranoia that our starting defense will be a virtual base 4-3 with BJ Foster sitting on the bench and McCulloch, Ossai and Adeoye manned up on slot receivers and running backs.

Let's tackle some key comments and I'll help you interpret the smoke signals:

Orlando gave a positive example rather than asking: "So y'all think we'll miss our Mike LB?" This is the underlying thesis of my 2019 season preview. We get way too attached to familiar starters and names and too often confuse tenure with talent. Longhorn media amplify that sense of loss by building up players that were replaceable. Did Texas lose 8 starters on defense? Sure. Outside of Charles Omenihu, how many will be missed? Did we downgrade, upgrade or push within our preferred schemes and what the defense actually wants to do out there with our new personnel?

    Orlando commented on the LBs:

Ossai will see snaps inside in certain defenses in certain situations and against certain offensive packages. We've always done this with the B-Backer and will continue to do so. Oddly, it was actually when Naashon Hughes was at his best. It should be noted that Ossai is pretty fluid and has a knack for getting good leverage on OL. As for Adeoye, "had a great summer" is a coaching platitude conveying hard work and effort. Adeoye has a role, but it's narrow - situationally and by opponent. McCulloch is as described and his on field IQ will be key in setting our front.

Defensive scheme tip alert! How are we getting more team speed on the field? Hint: rhymes with wayfties. Like most defensive coaches, Orlando uses quickness and speed interchangeably. The last line is also telling: he doesn't know how it will come together until he sees guys play. Meaning, he thinks he knows what he wants to do (play lots of DBs), but needs live fire to test his assumptions. He wants to gauge players like Josh Thompson, Overshown, Adeoye against more conventional offenses, the back up DL, Coburn, Chris Brown. Orlando is going best 11 and within a scheme that is an aggregate determination created by the play of all units - not just one guy competing with another on the depth chart at a specific position. Think expansively. We can't play much dime (6 DBs) on normal downs if Roach-Coburn-Graham and Ossai-McCulloch don't kick ass against conventional runs. Similarly, we don't know where to slot BJ Foster (Joker, Nickel) if Thompson doesn't show substantial growth from last year. It's all interrelated.

He's talking about the fact that Graham has a 700 pound squat, among other things. I'm high on Graham and Roach at the DE position and I believe they can be better than the Omenihu/Hager combo last year. Given that I love Omenihu, read between the lines. Don't underestimate how assets like Bimage, Carson, Jones, Ojomo factor in here as well. 20 hard plays from a quality back up is a big asset in this defense.

Orlando at his most unguarded. He knows his ideal defense needs an interior disruptor a la Poona Ford because of the trickle down of benefits it creates. Space eaters have limited value. How many hard plays can Keondre go in a game? I'd reckon 40 until the weather changes and he gets friskier in 50-60 degree temps The reason Coburn is special isn't size. It's his first step. If anything, size has been a detriment to employing that quickness consistently.

If we needed a club over the head to get the point, this is the final takeaway and it's tied inextricably to his earlier quote about team speed. He's telling you what's coming. Todd Orlando is a smart guy who can hold multiple ideas in his head at once. He knows where the special players and the best depth on this team reside. His job is to integrate them into his defense and find work for the best athletes on the team.

@Eggo guess you aren't watching the ongoing struggles at DL and RB recruiting for Texas for both 2019 and 2020 Classes.  It's pretty much a consensus on the Surly recruiting thread that Giles, Warehime, Mehringer, Meekins and Drayton are all significantly holding back recruiting for Texas.

Herman has already made a few staff changes to help Texas get more competitive.  The analysts staff was bolstered by adding Fedora and Beaty.  Adding Samples to help Carrington has really helped expand Texas recruiting in the DFW area -- a huge way to really hurt blOU's recruiting.

Dabo started making adjustments to his Clemson coaching staff after a couple of years as Head Coach at Clemson... Herman needs to do the same for the 2020 season in order for Texas to really step up and compete with Clemson and Bama for National Championships.

Just check out what Herman will have to compete against..... Clemson's Unbelievable 2020 Recruiting Class..

"Clemson is leading the way for a top ranking in the 2020 class, with a half-dozen, five-star commitments already in the fold."

I've been watching a lot of LSU '18 offense over the last couple of days, just because the few times I actually watched them during the season, I didn't come away with any sort of impression at all -- just the 'meh' of a typical SEC offense. That kind of impression is almost always wrong, so I decided to waste some free time by figuring out exactly how it was wrong, and I have to admit, I'm now under the impression that LSU hasn't just been underperforming offensively, they've been drastically underperforming. They've got the pieces in place to be really, really good, and in particular, their QB run game ought to cause people more trouble than it has.

Burrow is not blazing fast, and he doesn't have phone-booth quickness (something that differentiates Ehlinger, actually -- that elusiveness in tight spaces), but what he does have is really good awareness of where his blockers are going to be, and he is big and strong enough to finish runs well, particularly once he gets past the first level. The few times I saw him rolling out were actually designed QB-Power plays, and even though there weren't legit options to freeze the LBs, he got good yardage every time anyway.

Fromm gets the adulation of SEC media hype, but for my money, if I were building a college football team, I'd take Burrow over Fromm any day of the week.

I'd still take Sam over either, of course, but I'm starting to get pumped over this game being a heavier lift than the Georgia game was; it will more than likely carry all the gravitas that we all foolishly thought the Notre Dame had during Strong's last season.

LOL, You can say that about LSU every year for this entire decade. They recruit too much quality offensive skill talent to not be running some type of spread offense. I can't believe they waited till 2019 to finally try it.

Drayton, Warehime, need to go yesterday.  Put Mehringer on notice or get rid of him.  He misses on all the instate guys and we seem to have a lot of WRs on the roster not like him.

Bring in a second DL coach to help Giles.  Move Meekins to TE.  Hire Beaty at WR coach and bring in a stud recruiter as a Rb coach.  Keep Beck but have Beaty run your offense.

I don't think Beaty has been an OC before. He was the WR coach at A&M when KU hired him. So Herm would still need to bring someone in to be the playcaller/OC. Major Applewhite maybe?

Why da fucc is the Friday after Thanksgiving game at 11AM instead of 2:30pm?

And can we please move the RRS back to 2:30pm timeslot? I miss the days of the Miami-FSU game being at 11AM followed by the RRS at 2:30pm.

When was the last time we played on cbssn?

Never. This will be UT's 1st ever game on CBS Sports Network. Like folks mentioned in this thread, CBSSN has TV rights for some of the non-power 5 conferences. Since UT usually plays against non-power 5 conference opponents at home & almost never on the road, CBSSN never had the chance to pick-up 1 of our games in the past. With UT playing a rare road game versus a non-power 5 conference opponent against Rice, CBSSN probably jumped all over the opportunity to pick-up the game.
