I don't think Campbell is Herman 2.0, but Fickell is based on his resume.
Biggest difference between them is Fickell can probably tap UM as a resource for coaching advice and program-building, whereas Mensa fucked that relationship up. Campbell > Mensa, though

Actually, if you follow ISU program, you know that UM is a mentor of Campbell and he regularly speaks to him about coaching. This was most recently discussed by commentators during their asskicking of KSU.

Thanks, I didn't know that bc I don't follow ISU unless they're playing UT.

Show me a coach who has not lost a few games where he is a favorite. I'll wait. Never judge a coach by a game or two but his track record in program building. Have we learned nothing from Herman?

Iowa State's run in the past few years is so anomalous given their sordid pathetic history, that you almost have to wonder if they are cheating their asses off. It is literally one of the worst jobs in P5. Yet their program is at a stage where they are in championship conversation every year now.

We all know what the xfactor is behind this upswing. It's their fucking coach.

All those saying how Campbell is Herman 2.0 need to read up on how he has built the ISU program in the last few years.

  3. On defense, emphasize staying between your man and the basket. You'll have kids who want to freelance and chase the ball. Relatively easy habit to break.

On offense, good luck. If you have 4 kids who can handle the ball, you're in better shape than most teams. Obviously, play your best dribbler at PG and have him pass it to the wings while cutting to the basket. Have your posts work a high-low game.

We worked a play called "stack" where we had 3 kids line up on one side. The opposite wing set a pick for the PG and everyone flashed across the lane to get open. Or the wing on the stack side was aligned at the bottom and he used the other 2 as the screen.

It gets even harder for me this year - my 3rd graders are moving up from 8 to 10-foot hoops.

If any BMDs are reading this I left a pitching wedge at Horseshoe last time I was out there. If one of you guys can grab it and bring it by the tailgate for me that'd be super cool. Thanks.

  5. From The Football Brainiacs

Latest update has Urban Meyer making one demand – COMPLETE CONTROL of football operations.

This includes the hiring/firing of the following positions:

    • His entire coaching staff (with 3-year guaranteed contracts)
    • All individuals that work in football support
    • Assistant AD that overlooks football
    • Academic support staff
    • Physicians, trainers, and physical therapy team

Obviously, we are making some real progress here. One of my friends has told me the deal is done, but I'm hesitant to bite into that yet. But we are certainly much further into this than we were this time yesterday.

Pantoni and Marotti will respectively implement a recruiting machine and the Urban Meyer culture in short order.  Those two elements are most responsible for his success as a HC.

I don't keep up with assistants. Were these guys with UM at Florida and Utah, too?

because winning is non-negotiable and UM knows he's the guy, but any CEO/ops guy will tell you they need their team.  UM needs his guy(s) to win.  so indirectly, that guy or those guys are non-negotiable.  if they won't come, he can't be guaranteed of winning, if he can't be guaranteed of winning, he won't go.  I think this is executive 101 actually.  not shocked at all.

    I'm not "shocked", just surprised.

CEOs and executives are also paid the big bucks to build teams that don't always include their former cronies. For $10MM per and the right budget, he should be able to find competent assistants. It's UM's system and culture, after all.

Strength and Conditioning coach spends the most time with the players, Recruiting Co-ordinator knows how to deliver the bags.

Yeah, but they've got assistants under them who've been groomed over time to fill the same roles.

    Just sayin'

yeah I was coming back to say that I still think the "negotiating" is over and now he's getting his ducks in a row - which could include double checking with his doctor, family, etc. but could also be about making sure he can bring the people that are non-negotiables for him.  He may not take the job on an island but only with his crew or at least the few he feels he has to have.  But that's kind of in the same bucket as the health double check.  due diligence on his side.  not negotiating deal points.  maybe he gets an answer that requires a deal point to be renegotiated but he's likely not leveraging at this point.  But I only come from the angle of negotiating for a living, I have zero inside info.

I have a hard time understanding why anyone is "non-negotiable" for a $10MM per year HC job. I mean, WTF is so special about most assistant coaches?

Just because he followed 3 straight losing seasons doesn't mean he gets to ride mediocrity for 10 years. No one at Texas ever has, why should he be the first.  All he had to do was come in second in the shitty Big 12 for 3 years and he could have punched his ticket.  He did it once in 4 years. He can't beat Patterson, Riley, and is .500 against Gundy and Campbell. GTFO.

agree that Urban could stop the talk about him but it could be that he is fine letting Herman twist.  If he had no ties to Herman I'd say his silence is a really good sign but in this case in may just be spite.

At this point, I'd rather CDC talk Bob Stoops out of retirement than keep Turtle Tom around.

I'll be shocked if we even play a bowl. Whether it's because we can't get to 6 wins or because of covid

We won't need to get to 6 wins with everybody playing only 10 games or less.

    We're already "bowl eligible". 🚽

Hell, I hear ya here, but my interpretation of the whole situation, from everything we've been hearing, is that maybe the BMDs and "etc..." are finally realizing that "we're Texas" doesn't mean what they think it means, like most of us here have already realized. The fact they're even heavily considering Urban Myer tells us this.

Yeah, I'm gonna take a long shower if we're lucky enough to land Meyer. But, he's the only slam-dunk option available and we won't get another shot at a HC of his caliber soon. Optics be damned.

    Just win, baby!

Sucks but it’s been going on for much longer. How many conference championships did Mack have. Not nearly fucking enough.

Just 2 which still amazes me, in hindsight, with our many 10+ win seasons

Man, it's crazy how just last year LSU was steam rolling teams, and this season they're just...not looking good.

Anyone who says it wasn't Joe Brady is a ruh-tard. Burrow + Brady was insane. Not to mention Jefferson.

That and the Tigahs lost a shitload of NFL talent. Rebuild year with the Ogre in charge?

    Mediocre results
