Abmas was a nice player, but his size was an issue when we ran in to teams with big athletic guards.  Weaver was a great addition though.  I think Terry is done with undersized guards.

I think the biggest issue was moving Abmas to PG out of necessity. Hunter was so bad at PG that RT was forced to make a change. While Abmas was clearly an upgrade over Hunter he was better utilized as a 2/scoring guard.

I have a hard time hating on Abmas. He was a 2nd team All Big 12 player in a season he was forced to change position/roles because Hunter was so fucking awful.

This will eventually spiral down to “is disorganized” and “not a leader.”

Personally, I think we need Garrison more than Avila.

Avila and Shedrick together at the 5 will have some athleticism issues and especially on the perimeter. We need a more athletic mold like Garrison.

  3. The idea Texas “didn’t meet expectations” last year because of the portal makes zero sense to me.

Two of our best 3 players were from the portal (Abmas and Weaver). Last year’s roster didn’t hit their ceiling because they relied too heavily on returning players to be good (Hunter and Mitchell) and they simply aren’t.

The miscalculation last year was not recruiting over returning players like Mitchell with better players in the portal like Kaluma.

I have no idea whether these players are good or bad. But I do remember the same group here being excited about the acquisitions last year too, and none of those additions met or exceed expectations except Weaver.

Abmas was a positive addition but did not meet expectations.  So while 87’s argument doesn’t make sense, we should all be a bit skeptical until we see some success on the court.

Texas didn’t meet expectations last year because of returning players like Hunter and Mitchell being average to below average players.

Abmas was 2nd team All Big 12 in the best conference in the country. It’s not his fault Hunter and Mitchell didn’t meet expectations.

Terry had that comment this week about the ball being in Hunter and Mitchell’s court in terms of returning, but they certainly seem to be attacking the portal with the assumption neither will be back.

Go get Pope and Garrison and let’s cook.

There is zero reason we should want Hunter back if we are also the favorites for Pope.

I still think Mitchell makes some sense if we add somebody like Avila and Garrison doesn't want to come here. Mitchell can be the athletic 4 to pair with Avila (a more skilled big) and Shedrick (a more prototypical 5).

I would prefer Garrison and Avila though but that seems unlikely

    Longer and more athletic

    Last year's backcourt:

    Abmas (6'0 and that's generous), Hunter (6'0), Weaver (6'3).

    Next year's backcourt:

    Weaver (6'3), Johnson (6'5), Mark (6'6), Larry (6'3), and maybe Pope (6'2).

Fairly obvious that RT was tired of being that small last year.

Uh, you were the one who established disappointment since ISU didn’t make the tournament…

It's also just a terrible fucking argument.

Garrison, Avila, Mark, and Pope are all considered top transfers. None made the tournament this past season. I guess we shouldn't add any of these guys.

Ignoring how your response is a complete non-sequitur to mine. You do realize that Weaver also came from a team that didn’t make the NCAA tournament right?

You aren’t making a coherent argument at all.

Blaming last year's roster on the players RT added from the portal also seems like a really bad argument. IMO, 2 of the top 3 players on last year's team were players added by RT (Abmas and Weaver).

Texas didn't reach their ceiling last year because they were expecting Hunter and Mitchell to be much better and they simply weren't. If anything, I blame last season on not being more active in the portal and recruiting over somebody like Mitchell with Kaluma.

So now just making the tournament is the barometer for a successful season. Out of the transfers we took outside of weaver who would you consider a positive addition? I am totally basing this off of RT not knowing how to construct a team

    1) Weaver? You mean Mark who is one of the best transfers in the portal.

    2) Only a complete moron wouldn't think that Larry is a positive addition. Schools like Baylor, Duke, Kansas, Kansas State, and TCU all had legit interest. But I'll take your word over Scott Drew and Bill Self.

Unless you're referring to last year's roster which makes no sense in the context of Lonestar's response.

I’ve never seen any of these guys play, but they all sound quite a bit better than Lebron James.

This is funny but a lot of people actually watched that Indiana State team last year.

They were really fun with Avilla and those guards. The NCAA committee should be ashamed they let a sorry-ass Virginia team make the tournament over a team like Indiana State.

Stop comparing these guys to Dalton Knecht he was a DUDE for his team. He was avg 20+ a game.

You're right, Julian Larry sucks. It's why Baylor, Duke, Kansas, Kansas State, TCU, etc reached out to him and several were trying to get a visit.

Larry and Kent both had good data points against decent/good competition outside of the MVC.

Larry went for 18 and 6 in the NIT championship against Seton Hall and Kent went for a 30 burger against SMU earlier in the NIT.

When adding two starters from a Kenpom top 40 team are your 2nd and 3rd best additions of the day you know it was a pretty good day.

That's the idea behind getting the 3rd of the ISU trio. Think we need 2 more bigs still (I'm assuming Mitchell is gone), a starter and someone who's able to be more of depth, Garrison and Wolf are the others we've been connected to besides Avila.

Garrison and Avila would be ideal. An athletic big and then a more skilled big. Seems unlikely both would come here though but I guess never say never.

  14. Julian Larry to Texas.

There is our PG type. Pretty damn good day for Texas.

Larry makes a ton of sense with the rest of those guards who are scorers. Now we have a floor general around a bunch of scorers.

    Was our ranking?

26th and that's probably too low if Texas adds Pope.

That backcourt would be one of the best in the country between Pope, Weaver, Mark, and Johnson.
