TCU’s rank in 247 B12 recruiting rankings for the last 10 years:

    2022: 8, 4 4*
    2021: 6, 2 4*
    2020: 3, 9 4*

    2019: 3, 4 4*, 1 5* (Evans)

    2018: 3, 5 4*

    2017: 3 4 4*

    2016: 3, 9 4*

    2015: 6, 1 4*

    2014: 7, 2 4*

    2013: 5, 3 4*

My recollection was skewed, @quigley.  You’re right, they haven’t been 3rd every year for the last decade, as I thought. They did hit that 5 out of the last 10 years, and especially in the last 6 years have added a fair amount of 4* talent to the roster. They’ll do well this year, and appear to be set up for a good run in the new B12.

They haven’t, and won’t, approach blue blood recruiting standards. But they can do well in the new B12 with classes in the 20 range.

    For 2023, they’re currently sitting at 3rd, with 5 4*.

I looked back 5 yrs because that's most of the players on this team. Good to look back further. The new B12 probably won't have recruiting powerhouses so if they're top 20 consistently, they'll probably be at the top of the conference.

TCU has been 3rd in B12 recruiting for a decade. They don’t have UT or OUsux level of blue chips, but there are plenty of 4* guys across their depth chart. This isn’t the 1980s TCU anymore.
They won’t ever have the big bucks of UT, tOSU, etc. for NIL so won’t ever get top 10 classes, but it appears they’ll be just fine with top 20 or so classes.

    Nah. Here are the numbers.

    Recruiting  247  4*/total class #
    cycle      rank
    2018       25th,   4/24
    2019       32nd,   4/27
    2020       23rd,   7/20
    2021       44th,   3/15
    2022       28th,   4/14
       Average 30.4   22/100 = 22%

Below are 3 teams with similar recruiting that made the playoff. Interestingly, each school only made the CFP once with the coach who took them that year.
    2015 Michigan St
    2016 Washington
    2021 Cincinnati

2022 TCU went 5-1 in one score games. They're ballers and fun to watch. What they've done is special because it's rare.

But under the present CFP system, you could expect this to have been a one off year, just like for those other teams. With the new 12 team CFP and OU leaving the the B12 (Sooners won 13 of 23 conference titles since 2000), the rules may change.

Some food for thought for this thread.

A standard power rating formula is a pretty well known rating system and is something that can be used across all seasons because we have final scores of every game ever played in the top level of college football. Scoring environments have changed, though, so the raw power value can't be used to compare teams from different seasons because that would favor teams from higher scoring environments. What we can do, though, is normalize each team's power rating within their own season, essentially noting how many standard deviations from the mean they were. In the history of Texas football, here are the top teams in normalized power rating (in my system I set the mean as 65 and the standard deviation at 14, I like the numbers to look almost like grades and that puts 100 as 2.5 standard deviations above the mean which is a nice historical marker):

The only other team in the Top 14 with multiple losses had only 2, and they lost twice to the #2 team in the nation at the time of the game. The four losses here (obviously) are the issue. Sarkisian and his staff developed a very good football team this season. But his gameday tactics and coaching caused major issues in multiple games. None of this is surprising if you watched the game, and it also isn't surprising if you followed the weekly I DON'T UNDERSTAND THIS POINT SPREAD WHY DO THE BOOKS LIKE TEXAS SO MUCH WHY DO THEY OVERRATE US at the same time the team was actually going 8-4 against the spread for the season, not just overall.

Based purely on the numbers, it can easily be argued that this was our best team since Colt McCoy left campus but they were let down by gameday issues. Now where you go from there is up to you because both contrasting conclusions are reasonable. Does that mean the team is being set up to succeed and the closing drives against Baylor show that Sarkisian can learn and grow? Or does it mean that even with a very good team he will always find ways to lose games he should win? If you consider the ways the team was held back this year it also means that the above power rating should have actually been higher.

    You should make a website.

Riley also snapped at a reporter in the postgame for asking whether the players on D are "coached to try to go for the turnover vs. prioritizing tackling" after some of the long runs.

Never let that skin thicken, coach.

Never understood why Riley took Grinch with him to SC. If Riley doesn't dump the defensive staff (except Shaun Nua--he's good), it shows he has a huge blind spot. He looks at analytics and must see how terrible his defensive efficiency numbers are. He looks at film and must see how exposed the shifts leave his defense.

This game was a great illustration of how important exceptional QB play is for Riley's offense and how good Caleb Williams is. Prior to his injury, two drives = two TDs. After the injury, ten drives = ten points. Williams improved a lot this year, and his growth mindset makes me think he'll be even better next year.

Williams teammates love him. Versus Texas in 2021, Kennedy Brooks had a long run that ended in what appeared to be a fumble. The first person to console Brooks was Williams. I love that his painted nails annoy boomer internet tough guys.

Looking like Samples, and M. Kelly are top picks for WR coach. I’d definitely pregame Samples there. His instant recruiting impact would be huge.

Roof is gone, but I haven’t heard any names on a replacement.

This is the best news. Roof made 500k for what? He didn't coach, recruit, or help with game management. He did bring is son over from App St to take a scholarship and get hurt. At least there's been a course correction.

    Hopefully they someone innovative.

Riley’s going to have his choice of higher level programs soon. He’s not taking a step down to go to aggy.

Even if A&M gives him a blank check, Riley won't take it. Working under Jimbo would be a highly annoying career killer.

Riley would be smart to go some place with a good defense, resources, and the need for an offensive mind. Wisconsin, Penn St, ND, ?Clemson, ?Alabama would all be places that could be in the need for his services.

There’s a view Richt refused to cheat at Georgia. No idea whether that’s true or not.

There was the same said of Cooper.

There are levels to this, right. Neither Ohio St nor Georgia were "clean" under Cooper and Richt, respectively.

Tressel and Kirby took it to 11.

And not really a tolerant group.  They eventually fired cooper

He went 2-10-1 vs Michigan   FULL STOP             Don't do that.

He and Mark Richt (GA) were good but unlucky coaches who came close but didn't get it done and then were followed ass-kickers.

Well, the teams that are churning (UF, NU, AU, etc.) aren't having a shit ton of success, other than one-off and maybe unlikely NCs (LSU under Orgeron).

Michigan has stayed the course with Harbaugh. and UCLA with Kelly and are starting to have some sustained success.  Maybe.  Then there's aggy.

    I don't think there's a single right answer.

Michigan has stayed the course with Harbaugh? He won 10 games his first 2 years. Jesus

Chip Kelly is a good example, but not a great one. He is doing better

Mike Norvell at Florida St. is a good example of sticking with it paying off at a school that cares about football. They were awful his first two years. This year didn't start out great (the LSU win was lucky), but have improved throughout the year. Recruiting is starting to trend up for them too despite not having a flashy NIL program.

Ohio state has killed it, oklahoma has had Barry switzer, (Gibbs, Schemboozler, Blake) stoops and Riley in my life time which is good for like 25 conference titles. Schembechler, (Moeller) Lloyd carr (Hoke, RichRod) harbaugh have steadily won a lot at Michigan. Bear (Perkins, Curry) Gene stallings (Dubose, Franchione, Price, Shula) of course saban for bama. LSU has had success with (trash for decades prior to) saban, miles (they wanted to fire him for 5 yrs; Ed  LOL) and now Kelly (let's see). That’s 5 fucking schools who have the same resources as we do and don’t fuck it up constantly. If you are the one constantly having problems then maybe it’s you that is the problem.

Your examples prove the opposite point. I've filled in the blanks your memory omitted. Ohio St is the one school that's had success from Hayes onward.

OU's gone 2-3 with coaching hires since Switzer (wins Stoops, Riley).

    Michigan's 2-3 (wins Carr, Harbaugh)

Alabama was being thought of as like Auburn, a wasteland because of booster interference, prior to Saban. Since Bear, they've gone 2-6 (Stallings, Saban).

LSU was underachieving for 40 years prior to Saban and won despite Miles, not because of him. Ed O is a proven clown.
