There's apparently something in Venables past that eliminates him from being a head coach at a top school. People have brought it up since he was a successful DC at OU. I think he'd be a reasonable choice for OU, if he'd take the job now. I doubt he'd want it actually.

I fully supported Mixon getting kicked off the team and off scholarship.
Had that happened, he would've transferred to another school, sat out a year and played two.
OU made him sit out a year, gave him a zero tolerance policy, and he played two.
Stoops had a good (not perfect), track record of giving players second chances, holding them accountable, and getting growth from the player and production on the field.
Kelly seems like a terrible person to work for.

Nah, corruption isn't the issue. Leaders don't go apeshit on their own team.

This is the exact issue. Texas fans are viewing this from the perspective of how shitty our program has been. Lots of our fanbase would absolutely agree with letting Riley go if we were in their position. He's a very good coach but he is not a $12M/yr coach. Step out of the Texas fan perspective for a minute.
OU has gotten worse every year under him, they scored zero second half points against OSU last night to blow a conference title. In their games against decent defenses this season they scored
23 against Nebraska (2 ST points - PAT return)
16 against West Virginia
14 against Baylor
28 against Iowa State (7 defensive points)
33 against Oklahoma State (9 defensive/ST points and zero offensive points in the second half)So in games against decent defenses their offense scored 21, 16, 14, 21, 24
Now imagine the offensive genius who put that out there was asking you to double his salary. We'd say "see ya" just like OU did.

Riley is much better than Coker but he is below the elite tier and in a mix with several other coaches.1 hour ago, Huckleberry said:This second tweet is exactly what I've been saying. They've been getting steadily worse. He is not an elite championship coach, but he is certainly a very good one. Oklahoma could do worse, certainly, but they could also do better. Oklahoma has been getting steadily worse under him even while the other supposed-to-be elite program has been total crap.
First, I view you as a really good poster who I enjoy reading. If you're associated with the advancedstats.com, thank you. I enjoy that site. However, I find your opinion about Riley's head coaching tenure at OU devoid of context.
Tagging Riley for losses in 2017-2019, ignores the fact that OU averaged 37 pts in their six losses over those three years. Riley was saddled with Mike Stoops for 1.5 years. After the clownshow that was the OU defense in 2017, it was surprising to see Stoop get a second year, and I feel it's reasonable to blame him for the bad defense in all of 2018.
In 2020-2021, OU's offense has suffered from worse QB play AND much worse OL play. OU's OL recruiting based on star talent has been good (not great), but development of the unit has been poor. I'd be surprised if Riley takes Bedenbaugh with him to SC despite their long relationship (back to Texas Tech). In addition, OU hasn't really had elite RB or WR talent in the last couple of years. The Sooners have been mock here for having RB recruits poached at the 11th hour (Bama'd). WR recruiting has had boom-bust years. Mostly, it's the OL though.
Rattler had elite tools, but a terrible attitude. Same could be said of Kyle Murray, but Murray apparently worked like a beast. Rattler didn't. Caleb Williams didn't play in an elite conference in DC and lost his senior year to Covid shutdown (not complaining). His development from the Baylor to Ok St was remarkable. I think he'd have done really well next year and beyond with Riley. Who knows? He may still.
The OL + young QB issues = OU's offensive struggles this year. I, for one, was clamoring for a change in OU's OL coach this off season. Sherrone Moore (Michigan) is an excellent recruiter who played OL at OU and who's done well with the Wolverine's OL this year. He'll be a hot name in the next few years.
OU's defensive woes were starting to get sorted out. OU's defensive success in 2020 was overvalued based on the Sooners not really facing any good throwing QBs. K-St and UT were the two best and they put up 38 and 31 vs OU. FL was great, but checked out by the bowl game. The Sooner defense got credit in the stats for shutting down an elite Gator offense that didn't have most of their best players.
This year was the first that OU's improved defensive recruiting (and teaching) was starting to really pay dividends. It would've been interesting to see what happened next with more years of this group bring in and coaching up better players.
The proof's in the pudding. This would've been a pivotal offseason for Riley had he stated at OU. Would he have cut Bedenbaugh? Would he have cut Dennis Simmons (WR coach) with consecutive subpar WR years?
We'll see how his staff at SC fills out. I have a feeling he'll have a big staff (? and player) recruiting budget.

I mean it makes sense. USC is a blue blood and that conference can be dominated right off the bat. Still shocking. My guess is he doesn’t like the SEC, and that’s fair. I don’t like him but I do t see this as “running away” from the SEC. Why go through that if you can make just as much money and put together just as good a team in SoCal?
Congrats on the win yesterday, firstly.
He's 38 and has lived in the CST for most of his life. I haven't lived in OK since the 80s. May he and his wife did just want to get out of OK? He'll go through a 2-3 rebuilding years, but he'll be able to build a monster there.

Nothing against you, but that may be the final straw for my OU fandom. Kelly's sideline behavior portends really poor behavior behind closed doors.

Yet their freshmen DE whipped your ass all game.
Yes, he did, because the freshman QB holds the ball too long and takes too many sacks, but most of those were coverage sacks.
The OU offense improved so much throughout this year to get to the point it did today. Williams in particular was better with decision-making. OU still needs WR who will get to windows vs zone defense and sit.

So you’re saying that he took over the 90th ranked defense, and by his 2nd yr had them 46th, then 14th, and then 2nd? Yah, I don’t know how well it’d work out here -because apparently none of the numbers matter after what we’ve seen with PK this year - but if you wouldn’t sign up for that rapid of an improvement then I dunno what’s gunna satisfy you, ffs!11 4th or 5th year players. When does that happened? Anyway... next year will be the test to see if he can sustain success with a new batch of players.

Can we hire the Ok State DC?
Ok St has had the 79th and 46th best defenses during Knowles first 2 years. Last year they were 14th and this year 2nd.
This defense starts ALL 4th and 5th year players. If you'd like to have a great defense every 3-4 years, this guy's your dude.

I laugh at OU fans who think this. Please go listen to the Saban rant. It applies here too.
In fancy stats (FEI, FPI efficiency rankings, etc), in this DOWN year, OU's offense is top ten. It will rise a little after tonight too.
OU's program is in much better shape going into 2022 than in 2017.
The defense will be better in 2022 because of better talent across the board. The offense will be better because of better RB. Need to get some WR from the portal, and need OG from 2020 and 2021 classes to show out next year.

Riley is underwhelming as a head coach for a team seeking to win national championships and being in weak Big 12 conference has made him look much better than he really is.
All the guy did was move to OU and create an offense that's really fun and effective. Then he got the head coaching job and has won the conference title every year so far (and is within two games of doing it again), while beating his school's leading rivals 9 out of 10 times, going 14-4 vs top 25, 7-3 vs top 10, 21-6 in one possession games, and 55-9 overall. His recruiting is just now approaching the Clemson/Ga/Bama/Ohio St level, despite OU not being fully in the bag game like those others schools (see the Sooners lack of interest from players who want the full bag).
This year his offense is down. "Down" means FEI rank 16th, FPI efficiency ranking 8th, yards/play 8th. He's finally got a defensive coordinator who isn't a jerk, and the defense has improve from trash fire to competent and will probably be better in the coming years based on recruiting alone.
Who are the other coaches with comparable/better national championship odds?
Active coaches with national championships:
Saban: GOAT, but old, not leaving Bama (except if Texas opens).
Corch O: CEO coach whose offense sucks without transcendent skill position talent. LSU just fired him.
Dabo: CEO head coach whose offense sucks this year without transcendent skill position talent. Not leaving Clemson.
Jimbo: Surprisingly only 56, but looks terrible. Has more guaranteed money than any other coach in America, college or pro, in any sport (I think). One natl championship at FSU and then the program cratered. Best seasons at A&M was last year when he lost to Bama by 4 TDs and this year when he's lost 3 times. Seems to need to cheat to recruit.
Mack Brown: Yes, LSU should hire Mack Brown.Coaches without a national championship but look like they could win one:
Ryan Day: Young, 42 (Riley's 38), but not leaving Ohio St. He's #1 on the list to be next NEW national championship winning coach based on the based of operations and his performance.
Brian Kelly: Old, looks even older. ND was thought to be his dream job so not leaving. Based on his sideline demeanor, you'd be hiring @closetojumping with good scheme knowledge. His defensive coordinator, Marcus Freeman, may be the best coach on the staff.
James Franklin: Good recruiter of players and staff. 1-5 vs Ohio St but most of those losses were close. Nicknamed Frames Jacklin because of his boggling in game decision making. Compare his record at Penn St, 67–32, to Riley's.
Mario Cristobol: Good recruiter of players and staff but may need Nike $ to do it. Despite the PAC12 being WAY DOWN, he's only won one conference title. He ascended to HC job at Oregon the same year Riley did at OU. Compare 34–12 his record to Riley's.The only coaches that have more proven quality then Riley who aren't fossils are Dabo, Jimbo, and Day. I'd take Riley over Dabo and Jimbo regardless, but none of these three are moving anyway.
Who else are you thinking?

The LSU boards think they still have a shot with Riley.
It's really the only thing that makes sense to me because they would have already locked up somebody like Napier, Aranda or Fickell. They might miss on Riley but I think it's obvious they're swinging big here.
I agree that LSU's hire will feel underwhelming unless they get Riley (or an NFL guy?) at this point, but I don't think OU'd let him leave without a fight.
I don't think LSU (or USC or UF) gets Riley from OU simply by outbidding the Sooners. OU knows that having Riley when they move to the SEC is their surest path to avoiding becoming Arkansas, and that's worth a lot. Coming from the other direction, by all accounts, Riley values the stability that OU's administration offers him. This stability is stands in contrast the clownshow that is the LSU administration, which had the University running a deficit recently and currently has basketball recruiting scandal and a football Title 9 scandal.
To me, Riley leaving would mean that he really doesn't think he can win a national championship at OU, which may be the case. I may know that OU's administration won't be fully in the bag game (a la A&M, Georgia, Bama, Ohio St, and LSU), or feel that OU's lack of natural recruiting advantages will cripple the program with the change in conference.
Because the OU admin ALSO knows these factors are out there, I bet they'd even OVERpay to keep him.

Fucking psychotic. I can't tell which is worse the player 2, the dipshits who support player two and told player 1 not to snitch, or everyone in the school administration.
Cultures like this are at least tacitly tolerated. Frequently, they're quietly abetted. Occasionally, leadership participates in their initiation and propagation.

Maybe watch a guy that Bo Davis worked for, that would do it this way in a second and not think twice...
Saban used a depth-chart question – specifically about junior tight end Jahleel Billingsley – to reinforce his ideology for Tide football.
“Well, that's up to him. That's not up to me,” Saban said of Billingsley's place in the pecking order. “He knows what he's supposed to do in practice. He knows what he's supposed to do.
“You know, this is not a democracy. Everybody doesn't get to do what they want to do. Everybody doesn't get to do what they feel like doing. You've got to buy in and do what you're supposed to do to be a part of the team and do the things you need to do in practice, every day. That's a sense of urgency, play fast, execute, do your job.”
Saban also hammered home the point that Alabama's practice are so heavily attended by professional scouts that Crimson Tide players can begin laying the foundation for a potential professional career long before gameday.
“It's a privilege for everybody to go out there and create value for yourself,” Saban said. “We have (NFL) scouts at practice every day. Everybody thinks it's just about playing in the game. It's not just about playing in the game. They watch practice film, they watch guys every day.
“You guys on ESPN, you evaluate what happens in the game but they evaluate what happens every day. So what are you doing every day to create any value for yourself? But you have to create value for yourself so that your teammates and everybody gets confidence in you so that you have their confidence when you go out there and play. That's up to every player on the team. I don't make that decision for everybody on the team. I try to get them to do it. I try to point out the importance of doing it, but it's up to them to do it. Maybe that's not my question to answer.”
Saban doesn't understand what a democracy is, but the point is well taken. Trust and value are earned every day, not just during the games.
