  1. Goddamn there isn't a single Sooner poster on Surly that isn't a hopeless, hapless, helpless piece of shit.

Do you fucking know what moving the goalpost means? There is nothing different in either conversation that you are discussing. How could there be a moving of the goalpost if the discussion is exactly the same? OU has gambled by having 17 of their 56 OVs already completed. That is fact. I said that they need to make sure it ends up in more commits than just Henderson and Wease, and it has. Also fact. Also in both discussions.

OU and A&M each have hosted more OVs than the perennial top 15 recruiting schools combined. If you don't see the anomaly in that, the inherent gamble that is discussed, I don't know what to tell you. Also, who are the 11 commits? I see 9 for the 2018 class and 7 of those would've been predicted to OU by every person on Surly 6 months ago. (Jones and Green would be the outliers -- just so we can keep your mouth diarrhea to a fucking minimum).

  2. I like Tarp's write-up on the LBs for 2018 -- obviously was not pushed out by the Ministry of Information  ::

SPRING BREAKDOWN: A&M HAS A QUALITY SIX PACK AT LINEBACKER

Alaka (injured) -- Dodson (all conference caliber) -- Marchiol (sundial speed) --  Hines (running around blocks)  -- Johnson (was too slow for SS at 200 and is now at 225 playing Rover) -- Okeke (can't beat out Johnson at Rover)

This quote is especially awesome given the topic.

"The Aggies don’t have enough bodies at the position. They didn’t add anyone in the 2018 recruiting class and will have to do so for 2019 and beyond to replenish the unit. Even so, if A&M can continue to stay healthy <--- with Alaka hurt again.

I also like that he obviously had some negative coming and decided against publishing that part -- "The big questions"   <--- end of article.

Texas A&M’s linebacking corps could not have had a better spring.

Other than the hiccup of Otaro Alaka missing a few practices due to injury, the unit stayed intact during March and April. It’s basically six deep at the three positions (Mike, Will, and the Rover). The group has an all conference caliber performer in Tyrel Dodson.

Do we have to go back to the days of R.C. Slocum to be able to make those kinds of comments about the group? Seriously, when the last time that the Aggies emerged from spring practice with this type of talent and good health?

It’s sad that we’re asking these questions but it’s an indication of just how bad things have been at times during the past 20 years since Dat Nyugen and Warrick Holdman were making people think quality linebacking in College Station was the norm and not the exception to the rule.

Dodson led both teams with seven solo tackles in Saturday’s spring game. He is well coordinated as an athlete and sufficiently disciplined that he doesn’t overrun things as a player. Dodson can beat people to spots, set himself, and explode into blockers or ball carriers. Because he keeps his feet underneath his shoulders and his head high in his drops, he’s a factor versus the pass (three interceptions, eight passes broken up).

Alaka can run and he’s gotten better at filling and being in position. Like some older players, he’s overcome injury issues as a youngster to become a productive player on the field.

Redshirt freshman Santino Marchiol spent virtually his entire first year on injured reserve and there were questions about what kind of contributor he would be since he couldn’t appear to stay healthy. However, he answered those questions by staying on the field this spring and becoming the primary backup to Dodson. Marchiol is now a solidly built guy who can step and then align his feet and shoulders to drive himself into people and deliver serious blows with power.

Sophomore Anthony Hines is the backup at the Will and like Alaka can run. However, he has great feet, can avoid blocks, and has good vision to see how things are going to develop. Hines also has great closing speed and the long arms to wrap people up or fend them off. He had six solos on Saturday.

Sophomore Buddy Johnson has muscled up and is a compact and explosive athlete. Johnson arrived at A&M as 200 pound athlete who played a variety of positions in high school with the concern that he lacked the size to master any one of them. That’s no longer a problem as he’s filled out to 225 pounds. He can play in space as he’s quick enough to avoid blocks when necessary, change direction in coverage, and close quickly on the ball. He’s almost an ideal Rover in defensive coordinator Mike Elko’s scheme. He led the White team with seven tackles in the Maroon & White game, added 1.5 tackles for loss, and is also someone who can use his athleticism to make plays on special teams.

His backup is sophomore Ikenna Okeke who has transitioned from safety and found a home at Rover. He’s got a little more length than Johnson and can probably cover more ground. He had six tackles and a tackle for loss himself on Saturday. He’s not quite as explosive as Johnson but he has that length that enables him to wrap people up and get them on the ground. Both can pop up in the passing lanes and have been well taught in terms of being disciplined and making plays in space. Okeke had an excellent play on Saturday where he brought down running back Trayveon Williams on a swing pass, coming from his spot between the hashes and numbers to take the correct angle on a quality runner like Williams and bring him down in the open field one on one. It was an impressive moment.

Overall, the group contributed 34 of the 107 total tackles in the spring game on both sides. The only downside to the unit….as A&M boss Jimbo Fisher has noted multiple times over the past few weeks…is depth. The Aggies don’t have enough bodies at the position. They didn’t add anyone in the 2018 recruiting class and will have to do so for 2019 and beyond to replenish the unit. Even so, if A&M can continue to stay healthy and the group continue to get solid protection from a quality group of defensive tackles, then this should be a productive group that can hang with almost anyone when the season starts for real in August. The big questions

Either way I'd love to hear what sold him on aggy.

    Early playing time.

Everyone that has joined the Aggy class so far has been sold on early playing time/starting roles. It's their big pitch right now. It's also why I think a lot of them will stick despite a sub-par season. They'll see themselves as able to plug-and-play and be a solution. It's what every new staff does with the high end guys. Herman and staff have been straight with kids about where they would fall on the depth chart at Texas AND elsewhere. Hell, they will tell you where you are on their big board by position. They are brutally honest with the kids, parents, coaches, and trainers about it.. Some kids don't like the honesty when they see where they are on the board and get turned off by it (Arjei) and some guys are motivated by it (Banks, Patterson). This isn't going to change.

To be clear, you'll still have to have a small class every three or so classes if you're taking big classes, per math

yeah. Once the roster is fully turned over - every 3 or 4 years (depending on JR to the NFL and number of RS) you'll get a class of 16-18. Having said that, I don't think we'd see that until at least 2022.

  5. Holy mother of fuck Surly. What the fuck? I go on some shitty work travel and come back to the goddamn beating that is this fucking thread? Mother of fuck. Chill the fuck out.

I'm not happy about the Leal thing but it is early. Aggy is going to have to grab and hold on to guys because their season will be what it will be - 7 or 8 wins but some weeks where they will be non-competitive. They are going to get guys because they are in the 1st year bounce. A least of couple of those guys were quoted as saying they were afraid of the large class at Texas last year. Fuck that shit.  Yes, Jordan Patterson is the guy that has been recruiting himself to Texas and yes he is fucking good. Also of note, EJ brought his grades to this convo but they are nowhere near as dire as say Josh Ellison or some shit. Don't listen to fucking EJ.

The Cal RB is being brought in because he is a scheme fit. Now they will see if he's a cultural fit. Get used to it. This staff will never stop recruiting at and over any position. If they see a player that is a scheme and cultural fit they'll bring him in. The same reason you'll see full classes every year. You won't see any smaller classes until the roster is at a championship level and even then, if a player is a fit and can contribute then he'll be recruited. We are going to see some turnover after the fall and spring every year.

This weekend is going to be a good one but this staff is not pushing for fauxmentum or early commits. OU has used 17 of their 56 OVs already, Aggy 14 of 56. That is fucking huge because OU and Aggy have taken the very early approach to this cycle. I'd imagine that both are going to wish that they had paced themselves a bit here. Texas, Clemson, Alabama, and USC are holding back on OVs - taking the opposite approach. After seeing the rush last season between NSD1 and NSD2, I think it's clear that the teams that hold enough OVs to host huge events between the bowl games and signing day are going to have a lot of leverage to complete their classes with talent and not bread.

Texas is going to sign a badass class in 2019. There are going to be some quotes from the past few pages that texifornia can pull up for the lulz in Feb.

  6. Told y'all. Fuck off EJ you fucking twat. There isn't a person following recruiting at even a cursory level that didn't know Wease was going to OU, and that Henderson was going to go where Wease went. You fucking stupid assbag. ZOMG JAMAL MORRIS IS GOING TO OU AS WELL!! everyone brace yourselves for EJs inside info.

  7. Awesome coffee's for closers gif. Super topical and not at all played out. Four years ago.

Congrats on getting Theo Wease and Arjei Henderson back, I guess. Is Riley just gonna have that duo commit and decommit over and over and visit Aggy just to rope-a-dope them and create fauxmentum in Norman every few months? Wease has only ever wanted to go to OU. I for one am super glad to see Henderson hit your locker room for the ~2 years. I'm assuming Jamal Morris will go ahead and pull the trigger, even though Young is going to Aggy this weekend?

That's A LOT of OVs this early in the cycle, if this weekend doesn't net 4-5 more commits you're going to have an interesting summer and fall. 17 of your 56 possible OVs off the books in mid-April. You better fucking hope Riley is closing.

Dax Hill is a no-show again. I've enjoyed reading the OU mods explain his absences in Norman over and over and over again. I esp. like the fact that they seem to think that it's OSU that is the problem. I have no idea why they are last to the party but ... Alabama.

    DirtBurglar OV list ::

DT Derek Green (6'5, 309) of Jacksonville (Southwest), North Carolina who was a one-time commitment to OU and the decommitted because he said that he needed to stay close to home. However, OU has stayed on the phone with him and he is taking his official to OU this weekend.

OT Tyler Johnson, 6'4, 270, Conroe Oak Ridge, Texas is taking his official to OU this weekend.

OLB Cade Stover, OLB, 6'4, 225, Mansfeld (Lexington), Ohio is a four-star that really likes OU and he will be taking his official this weekend.

Austin Stogner, TE, 6’6, 230, Plano (Prestonwood Christian), Texas: Four Star: OU Commit. Despite efforts from A&M and UT Stogner remains totally committed to OU and this will be the only official visit that he takes.

Theo Wease, WR, 6’3, 194, Allen, Texas: Four-Star: The one time OU commit appears to still be leaning to OU, but following this spring he will take two more visits this spring to LSU the following weekend and USC on June 22nd. OU’s goal this weekend is to get him to recommit and then cancel those two other visits.

Arjei Henderson, WR, 6’1, 179 of Richmond (Travis), Texas: Four-star: Another former OU commit is best friends of Wease and they say they would like to play at the same school. Henderson has his choices narrowed down to three schools OU, Texas A&M, and Alabama and he says he wants to visits all three schools unofficially.

Jason Haselwood, WR, 6’2 1/2, 180, Ellenwood (Cedar Grove), Georgia: Five-Star: Georgia Commit. This longtime Georgia commit has family ties to OU and has a long time interest in the Sooners and he is going to give the Sooners a chance to change his mind. Hazelwood has been unofficially to Auburn and South Carolina so he does seem to be looking around.

Chris Steele, CB, 6’1, 188, Bellflower (John Bosco), California: Five-star: Steel has the schools he wants to visit and he is going to Louisville this weekend, OU for the 13th, LSU the following the weekend and Florida on September 8th. If he is still not committed by the time he gets to Florida that may be tough for the Sooners to overcome.

Jaden Davis, CB, 5’9, 166, Fort Lauderdale (St. Thomas Aquinas), Florida: Four-Star: Davis is a talented corner that has liked OU for a while and has official visits thus far set with OU and Ohio State. He takes a look at the Buckeye’s this weekend. Miami and Florida also seem to be major players here.

Brayden Ingraham, DE, 6’4, 260, Ft. Lauderdale (St. Thomas Aquinas), Florida: Four-Star: OU needs to bring in more talented defensive lineman and Ingraham fits that mold. OU will have to beat Miami here but they have also offered his good friend Davis and OU would love for them to be a package deal at OU.

Jamal Morris, S, 6’2, 185, Richmond (Fort Bend Bush), Texas: Four-star: Morris seems to like OU a lot and OU has a good chance to earn a verbal this weekend. The rub is that he is best friends with four-star cornerback Erick Young who likes OU too, but has decided to visit Texas A&M this weekend. Those two say they would like to play together but they are not visiting together unless one of them changes their mind where they are going this weekend.

Jarring Jones, S, 6’1, 185) of Flowed (Northwest Rankin), Mississippi: Four-star: Talented safety that is going to take his first official to OU for the spring game. OU has a decent shot here.

Michael Tarquin, OT, 6’5, 290, Belleview, Florida: Four Star: Tarquin is working the recruiting game as he has already been to OU twice, Miami, Ohio State, Clemson, South Carolina and Michigan. The oping game will be his first official visit and OU hope to get that verbal, but 247Sports feels he is a Miami lean.

Caedan Wallace, OG, 6’5, 315, Princeton (Nun School), New Jersey: Four-star: OU appears to be very much in the running for Wallace and they will take their at-bats with him with him. Penn State appears to be the Sooners biggest challenger early.

Jalyn Phillips, S, 6’1, 190, Lawrenceville (Archer), Georgia: Four-Star: OU appears to be in the running for Phillips with Alabama and Tennessee and he recently went to Georgia Tech unofficially.

Cam’Ron Kelly, ATH, 6’1, 190, Chesapeake (Oscar Smith), Virginia: Four-Star: Kelly is a two-way talent that OU likes as a CB, S and a WR. He has been to Junior Day’s at Clemson, Virginia Tech and twice to Virginia and now he is going to check out OU.

Joseph Wete', WDE, 6'4, 220, Washington DC (Gonzaga): Four-star: OU Offer, OU is battling Penn State for his signature and get their first chance to really go after him hard this weekend.

That's A LOT of OVs this early in the cycle, if this weekend doesn't net 4-5 more commits you're going to have an interesting summer and fall. 17 of your 56 possible OVs off the books in mid-April. You better fucking hope Riley is closing.

So Jimbo will keep Sumlin's tactic of offering everybody at one school to get one player. I guess they got Jalen Preston with only 2 teammates ...

    It’s the SEC way

indeed. saw this earlier today from The Rant --

Kentucky FB hasn't played a OOC P5 team other than Louisville/Indiana since they played at UNC on September 22, 1990 (28 years ago). Since then, they have not played a regular season game against a P5 team outside of the yearly Louisville (after their move to the ACC) and Indiana.

Their future schedules are set through 2022 and have none. That will be 32 years and counting.

  10. I don't think ArkyChad is an elite recruiter. I do think that he was more than pissed about not getting at least a cursory interview much less being held at arm's length by Aggy during this coaching search. I think he'll do anything and everything to get wins vs. Aggy on the field and on the trail. He's also a very good football coach. I don't know how good he is as a CFB HC yet, but I know that his offensive prep/gameplanning is very good and that his offense will be hard to prepare for coming on the heels of Alabama. While they won't have the talent to matchup with Aggy h2h they are going to cause match-up problems at spots where Aggy lacks depth. (CB, LB). If Jimbo's 2nd slowest offense in the nation doesn't produce long drives that end in lots of 7s they are going to be in trouble. If they hit a stretch of 3 and outs (Mond) or have some turnovers (Starkel) -- Chad will find a weakness to exploit.

  11. Texas has set its first out-of-state summer satellite camp.

The Longhorns will be partnering with Lindenwood University for its Jed Stugart Mega Camp in early June in St. Louis, Missouri.

Texas is recruiting several prospects from the St. Louis-area, and landed four-star inside linebacker Ayodele Adeoye, who is a Missouri native but finished his high school career at IMG Academy in Florida, last cycle.

Texas will also hold in-state satellite camps in Commerce, Houston, Marshall and San Marcos. The Longhorns will have a pair of on-campus camps as well.

Expect Texas to continue to schedule out-of-state camps. The Longhorns made it out to Florida, Georgia and Nevada last year.

  12. Hamm Lite questioning Clemson's recruiting tactics vs. Jimbo's ::

    Quote

Clemson with an interesting move - They have apparently decided not to have any official visitors in the spring. I think with this first recruiting cycle with spring official visits, there is going to be a lot of trial and error. I can see why some schools would want to have big weekends but I also see why schools would want to wait to try and fire the last shot. It is easier to hold on to someone already committed than to get them to commit, though, so we will see if the A&M, OU, etc. approaches work.

  13. ok, so we've seen Aggy spun up about Jaquaze Sorrells right?  Here's his tweet about not publicly releasing a top schools list ...

Which of course is RT by Hamm, etc ...

what's the catch? Well, I'm no detective but he decomm'd from Florida and is going to commit on his uncle Marvin's BDay. Why is that important? Well, Marvin was his "FSU Angel"

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict FSU.

    12) The state's 2019 is chock full of prima donnas and it's a legitimate concern for various coaches during this cycle. There are a lot of guys with red flags of one sort or another, so the homework in this cycle is pretty damned important.

The ranking services (specifically 247) share blame in this one as well. There are 4-5 guys in the top 15 or so that are unlikely to get in or stay in anywhere, much less contribute over 4 years. In years past that has been taken into account for some recruits and it hurt their rankings but this year the influence via access to their trainers, which 247 relies SO heavily on right now because they simply don't have much access to coaches at Texas, Oklahoma State, and TCU compared to past years. This is also why it's so important to pay attention to who is being recruited continuously vs. who is ranked where in 2019 for sure.
