Can't seem to create something crazily-silly enough for this commie-Surly thread. Cause similes versus cultish snark, all I got is Cutty Sark.

To contribute: my daughter and I met up at Busty's on Cameron, and that burger was pretty good
How's the overally divey-ness of Busty's? If we go out after Tex-Mex next Thursday, I've got it earmarked as a backup for Lala's Little Nugget.
Also, for @South Austin, you gotta do something about that. I only lived in Austin for four years and made a point to hit up Top Notch after Dazed & Confused came out. Solid burger and fries combination. Kind of reminded me of Luke's in Houston (if anyone remembers that; Apparently, it's Annie's Now and looks similar). But a solid burger-stand type burger by any estimation.
Also, my go-to for any burger joint where I'm not familiar with the other options is a cheeseburger how I like it. If a place can't get a basic burger all the way (with a few personalized wrinkles) right, it's unworthy.

Update on cheap Squier Strat: it doesn't sound great, kinda thin. There's no point in keeping the body ($120) and building out a frankenstrat. I think this is going to go on the "give it to a nephew" list.
My strat is made from a Classic Vibe strat body and sounds great, even when not plugged in. Did you fiddle with the pickup height at all?
Oh, wait, I just remembered that mine has Am Std pickups in it. Disregard all but the acoustic playing take.

So, hopefully got both kiddos coming home (to the US) for Xmas this year. We have talked about taking a 3-4 day trip after New Years as a family, then they'd fly back overseas.
I'm toying with NYC. Like, maybe flying in on the 1st (will the stupid New Year's crowds be thinning out then?), and then having the kids fly back to Europe from JFK on the 4th or 5th. Would be a shorter and easier flight for each of them, so that's an advantage. But is that a good time to be there? And....what should be on our agenda? Sure, we can see a show, hit a museum or two we haven't hit....but what else?
The boy's suggestion for a similar timeframe was to visit NOLA, and I know what to do there over a few days, but am trying to sort out what a NYC itinerary would look like.
Until an expert arrives to answer your question:
My NYC experience over NYE was a long time ago, but so was my experience in NOLA during a different NYE. And here's my take based on repeated visits to both cities since then: I honestly didn't notice a difference between NYC between Christmas and New Year's Eve versus any other time I have been there. There are a lot of people there either way. Even getting down to Time Square on the 31st wasn't a big deal (we were at a concert at MSG), and by the time we got back on the street, Time Square was a ghost town and cabs were nonexistent. I imagine hotels after the big night are going to be easier to come by and possibly more reasonable (but see hotels are expensive thread). But other than being cold and snowing a bit, it was just like any other trip to NYC for me.
I'm a total sucker for top of the Empire State Building as a tourist. American History museum and Central Park are always a good way to spend my day. Frank in the East Village is delicious.
I was in the quarter in NOLA for NYE when Texas was playing in the Sugar Bowl. I'll never do that again. It was like Mardi Gras times 10 and absolutely miserable. The rest of the city was fine. That's just to say that if I had my pick of spending NYE in either of those cities, it would be NYC 6 days-a-week and twice on Sunday.
Again, I wouldn't hesitate to go in very early January (but haven't been at that time).

And every hour instead of bells it would play the theme song from Curb Your Enthusiasm.
I was thinking more along the lines of the fail horn from The Price is Right, which, as I type that, I realize is 100% appropriate from an irony standpoint.

Wow, Lucia was pretty fucking awesome.
Old post, but my wife and sister in law went there a couple of weeks ago, and even the leftovers I got out of the fridge and ate cold the next day were amazing.

Bobby and OTF is still gonna be there. I just told them I'm done doing all of it. There will be stuff there but I'm not driving - I was saying the above because I'm serious about not pitching the save if no one does anything this time. There's budget for stuff to get done.
Okay, so it sounds like you're saying Vanderbilt is a test case. It might be fine if someone else (who was supposed to all along?) steps up to do the legwork, or, if that doesn't happen, it might look like a bunch of stuff was delivered but isn't set up or otherwise organized in any usable fashion (or somewhere in between)?
I guess if it's the latter, we can just head to the alumni center, but we'll plan stop by Surlygate first to see if it's functional and someone is there to scan our tickets. That's for sure my preference.

Spot is there still. I'm not gonna do shit for it, I am sure people will be there and there's at least beer whiskey and tequila.
The guy who has all the equipment had his truck sideswiped so if he can't bring the stuff then there won't be TVs and shit. Not my fucking problem anymore. It doesn't seem like anyone else cares enough to take it over. It's turnkey and I can just pay out the ticket sales the next week.
Sorry for being dense, but since I've already bought four tickets for this one before the season started and have people coming in from out of state, you're saying there's going to be booze and beer in the area? I'm honestly not complaining. If I'm out the money, just consider it another donation. But I don't want to head that way early if there nothing but an assortment of booze and warm beer 20 paces from an abandoned stripper pole.
Or is there a setup, but maybe no TVs and food? I don't care what the answer is, but I would kind of like to know what the answer is so I can plan accordingly. You mentioned an announcement in the "Florida debacle" thread, but I never saw one until this post.
So if you could explain it to me like I'm five, it'd be much appreciated.

My favorite strat color...
Yeah, it's like Fender wanted to copy the 60s, Japanese copy sunburst. Despite Jimmy-Jazz's take on it, I rather like it. Kind of understated.
My first electric was a Teisco (?) like this one but no vibrato arm port. My Uncle bought it in the 60s and gave it to me along with a Ventura hollow bass and a 1962 Gibson LG-0. I still have the Gibson.

The Curra's avocado frozen margaritas slam hard in the paint. I usually like a very minimalist rocks marg with fresh lime juice and little else. But @dcbc, get you an avocado frozen.
Same M.O. if I'm drinking a margarita, but I will give that a try for sure.

Eldorado does not have what I'd call a decent beer selection, but you can get a Jellyfish or Negro Modelo. I went with by class of 94 dude friends earlier this year (most were from out of town) and everyone was very happy
Honestly, at a Mexican restaurant, I really just want my draught Modelo to be nice and cold and refilled frequently. And can go beer geekish later/elsewhere.

none of these tex mex places are going to have an "evening vibe". go to fonda san miguel if you're looking for that. considering where you're located, mi madre's would be my choice. y mas and nuevo mexico are also good options. there is a curra's in hyde park that might have a vibe.
Vibe is a moving target for a group of married dudes in their early 50s. Decent beer selections, solid margs, and no visible water stains on the ceiling is the floor.
Thanks for the suggestions so far. Y mas closes at 9. So that might push it out of the running depending on what time the last of our group arrives, unpacks, and pregames.

I don't know what the surly consensus is about El Chile, but it's right in that area (1900 Manor Rd). You could probably walk. We eat there every once in awhile, and generally like it. Not our fave but it's close to our kids.
So what's your favorite? LIke I said, it doesn't have to be super close.
I'll mention Curra as well. I haven't had good interior in a minute.
Of the 3 I mentioned, what's the consensus. Is El Dorado worth the trouble? Does Y Mas have a decent evening vibe or is it just straight-up delicious? Mama Betty's? Just okay? I've been to most of the standard fare during the years I lived in Austin and those that follow. These guys are from Texas, so I'm not taking them to Matt's or the like.

I'm hosting some friends from out of state (all originally from Houston), and they requested Tex Mex one night. My sister in law recommended El Dorado Cafe, which looks good. But we're planning to go on the Thursday night when everyone gets in, and the last arrival is at 5:20 p.m. I see they take reservations. So I guess we could shoot for 8:15 or 8:30. But I hate feeling rushed, particularly with Tex Mex.
So for a combination of good food and decent evening vibe, would Enchiladas Y Mas or Mamma Betty's be a better choice? Other suggestions. We're in an Air B&B just east of 35 and north of campus. Closer could be better, but it doesn't really matter.
What says the Surly Tex Mex Brain trust?
